Freeing up a roster spot

Just curious - with the offensive line in shambles right now and the team looking for able bodies is it possible for the Redskins to deactivate Brandon Llyod and free up a roster spot to sign another offensive lineman?

The reason I say deactivate is you cannot cut Llyod right now due to cap reasons and I don't think you could put him on IR if he is actually healthy just to free a roster spot. But if you deactivate Llyod wouldn't this allow the team to free up a spot for an offesnive lineman and not have to put Randy Thomas on IR who may be able to come back in December?

If you deactivate Llyod yes you only have 5 recievers but I would think getting another offensive lineman is more important at this point than carrying a reciever who may get in for one or two plays a game.

I'd rather not IR Thomas if we don't have too.....I still think for the long term success of the 2007 Washington Redskins, having him towards the end, potentially would be huge.... However I could see where that might be our only option at this point.

You could IR Lloyd...but he would make quite the fuss if we did. It would be a pretty big story.

You can suspend him for conduct detrimental to the team (i.e. being horrid at football), but then we'd have the NFL players union on our ass.

I very much doubt we IR Thomas if there's a chance he'll be back. We NEED o-linemen, and he's the best prospect out there, if he can get back by December.

It'll be an inactive. Cody Boyd is a backup TE--we'll probably put him on the practice squad (first heard this guy's name on extremeskins--don't know if he's any good).

You can't just put Lloyd on IR unless he's got a legit injury. The league would be all over that.

But he (Lloyd) does have an obvious injury, he's head has clearly been stuck up his ass for 2 years now. Poor guy, what a shitty outlook on life.

I don't think you do anything with Lloyd but put him on the field! I know I am going against the grain here, but let's take a look at the last two weeks.

1 catch - 8yds when he finally got in the game vs the Lions
0 catch - but beat the defense deep and ALMOST made a great catch inside the 5.

Yeah, these aren't great numbers but I do believe if we can put him out there, he has the speed and talent to stretch the field for our offense.

Let the flaming begin...

LOL no flaming necessary. Not sure what you're trying to point out there but it did give me a good laugh. You pretty much flamed yourself with that take.

I agree. I think we need to get all our guys involved early.

Haha, after a few hours I have come back to read my rambling. It made no sense at all. I hereby apologize for my horrid rambling.

I don't care who you are...that sh*t is funny right there!!!!!

But yes, to answer the question, you CAN deactivate a player, but it is not a long term thing. Players are activated and deactivated on a week by week basis.

The teams roster number is always set at 53. But teams are only allowed a maximum of 45 players on the active game day roster. So there are always 8 players that are inactive for any given Sunday. Coaches shuffle players to and from the active game day roster to the inactive roster as they see fit.

Oh yeah, Lloyd could cry to the Union all he wants, whether or not he is active for a Sunday game is purely the coaches decision and the Union cannot interfere with that. The union is there to protect the players rights and make sure he gets paid what he and the team agreed to. The Union cannot dicatate to an organization the 45 man game day roster. As long as Lloyd is getting paid, the union stays away.

I'd play Brandon Lloyd.
