A 2009 Spring Dream....
It is obvious that we need pass rush and we need a younger OL. I have gone to one of those free agent rating sites, and have sorted the data to only show players that are highly rated and have less than 10 years of wear and tear. So how many of these top ranked players should we go after and how many can we afford???
Pos Name Yr Ht/Wt C Jason*Brown 4 6-3/320 DE Terrell*Suggs 6 6-3/260 DE Julius*Peppers 7 6-7/283 DT Jovan*Haye 4 6-2/295 DT Albert*Haynesworth7 6-5/320 DT Rocky*Bernard 7 6-3/290 OG Jahri*Evans 3 6-4/318 OG Stacy*Andrews 5 6-7/342 OLB Michael*Boley 4 6-3/223 OLB Leroy*Hill 4 6-1/224 OLB Angelo*Crowell 6 6-1/246 OLB Bart*Scott 7 6-2/240 OT Jordan*Gross 6 6-5/300 OT Marvel*Smith 9 6-5/321 OT Mark*Tauscher 9 6-4/315 By the way, if we got Suggs and Gross, both still can play out a contract, it would be a huge upgrade....but it will come down to cash. Re: A 2009 Spring Dream....
The DL is fine, we don't need to do anything there.

Re: A 2009 Spring Dream....
I think our DE are above average in the league, but what we are lacking is the push from the middle. Often our ends meet in the middle, only to find the QB has stepped up or broken the pocket. We need a Haynesworth or Shawn Roger type guy. I would prefer the draft option with a young talented DT. Defensive lineman are expensive and we need cap room to sign Hall. I agree pursue a free agent OL to immediately fill in a need position.

Re: A 2009 Spring Dream....
Heyer has really impressed me the past two games. I honestly dont think Tackle is as big of a need as i thought it was. We need another BACKUP tackle, but i'm fine with Heyer and Samuels as our starting tackles... i'd even consider starting heyer at LT and moving Samuels to RT. I'm also counting on Rinehart to be a good Guard for us. I think Thomas is only going downhill from here, and Rabach needs to be replaced. For our Oline, I would do the following upgrades THIS Offseason:
C Jason*Brown 4 6-3/320 OG Jahri*Evans 3 6-4/318 We would have a starting lineup of: Samuels-Evans-Brown-Rinehart-Heyer For our defense, I would do the following: OLB Michael*Boley 4 6-3/223 DT Albert*Haynesworth7 6-5/320 |
Re: A 2009 Spring Dream....
Jordan Gross, Terrell Suggs, Jahri Evans, Leroy Hill, Angelo Crowell, Michael Boley, Jovan Haye, and Stacy Andrews are all worth looking at in FA.
|
Re: A 2009 Spring Dream....
We've got 4 draft picks (three in rounds 1-5, and probably can only count on our 1st rounder as a starter) and need about 6 "new" players (IMO): 3 o-line, OLB, playmaker DT, and possibly another corner. Have to think we take o-line in round 1. I also like taking a young DT in the draft, but that probably means we drop a current guy and very hard to decide who IMO. Griff is aging but a monster run stopper still. Tough call.
We're going to have to be active in FA to fill out the roster. |

Lifetimeskin~
A lot of these guys will probably sign with their own teams. And the thing that I don't like about free agency is these guys are use to the systems that they play in. With Suggs, Scott and Haynesworth... they all play in totally different schemes than we run here. If they came here they might not be as effective. I'd prefer to be patient and build through the draft and add a piece here and there. I remember when we signed Wilbur Marshall from Chi back in 88. He was miserable his first few years here cause he was not allowed to free lance and do his thing. I never forgot that and free agency should never be about going out and signing the most talented guy. It's about getting a guy ( like London Fletcher) that can come in and fit what we do on offense or defense. Look what Carolina had done this year. They went out and upgraded their O-line, moved Peppers back to his original position, drafted a stud young runner, brought back Mushim Muhamed and got back a healthy Jack D. I know Jack D. is a big part of their resurgance but nothing they really did during the off season really stood out. I can see us following the same path as Carolina did. Move JT a little more to his origianal spot, get back a healthy Samuels, add a new RT, get better production from our young wr's and maybe draft a pass rusher then we can be a in a very good position to win 10-12 games. |
Re: A 2009 Spring Dream....
Haynesworth will cost at less a 20 million dollar signing bonus. Can we a afford that?

Lifetimeskin~
I like these 4 and also Jonathan Vilma, who you left off. We don't need to overhaul, but we could certainly get younger and more athletic a some key positions. I don't think we're in bad shape on the OL if we replace Rabach (or move him to guard to replace Kendall) and Jansen. Heyer will be decent at RT, not a pro bowler, but not a turnstile like Jansen either. Our LB corp needs a playmaker. Fletcher is good but not a game changer, McIntosh is so so and Washington is done. Our DL needs a dominant playmaker so we should spare no expense for Haynesworth. That will help improve our pass rush from the inside out. |
Re: A 2009 Spring Dream....
I think Rocky Bernard needs to be added to our d-line, we could get him for a lot cheaper than Haynesworth, and for better value. The thing with Montgomery and Golston is that they are good players but better backup's. They've proven that they are just fill in guys, they are not quite good enough to be starting in this league. With the addition of this one player, and the re-signing of D Evans I think our d-line will have great depth.
DE- Jason Taylor / Phillip Daniels / Rob Jackson DT- Rocky Bernard / Anthony Mongomery DT- Cornelious Griffen / Kedric Golston DE- Andre Carter / Demetric Evans / Chris Wilson Looks good to me So we could then focus on the o-line and LB's in the draft, I like Eugene Monroe in the 1st round, Hail |

He's probably not better than Griff and probably about the same as Montgomery and Goldston. |
Re: A 2009 Spring Dream....
Paging Terrance Cody. Terrance Cody please report to Ashburn.
Anyway my 2009 Spring Dream would probably be Bart Scott, Terrance Cody, a 3rd round center, and Jordan Gross. |

I think you're remembering incorrectly, here's his stat line during his career in Washington: 1988: 133 tackles, 4 sacks, 3 INTs 1989: 108 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 INT 1990: 107 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 INT 1991: 135 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 5 INTs 1992: 138 tackles, 6 sacks, 2 INTs Wilber Marshall Statistics - Pro-Football-Reference.com And just going by what I remember, I don't recall him struggling at all. He was one of the best LBs we've had here. |
Re: A 2009 Spring Dream....
Draft the linemen, maybe pick up a couple younger FAs, but get some hungry young talent in here for a change. I liked how Taylor really stepped it up yesterday, but can he do it for more than one game? Would be nice to see him have a great '09 then retire.

Good group for sure, but Suggs will cost a fortune, along with Crowell. I say go via the draft and get say one FA for each line, maybe two. I am not privy on our cap situation, but any O linemen up for renewal should not be resigned. |
