Darryl Tapp
"Darryl Tapp has one of the best bursts off the snap of any DE in college football. His pass-rushing has become steadily better as his career with VT has advanced, and that's always a good thing to see. He plays bigger than his size, using his smallish height to gain leverage, and has a huge motor that never shuts off. Also, Tapp is a tremendous special-teams player, a trait becoming more and more common of VT's stars."
Anybody think this guy can be the pass-rushing DE we need? |

Re: Darryl Tapp
Would you REALLY put Tapp in the punk category? He's the model citizen of the Tech football team. I know that might not be saying much, but read a few draft reports on the guy and you'll change your mind.
|
Re: Darryl Tapp
He'll be gone by the time we pick.
|
Re: Darryl Tapp
There's actually a chance he would fall to us. According to most draft boards he's not the "top" rusher that most teams are after. In addition to that, there's not a lot of teams in need of DEs besides us.
|
Re: Darryl Tapp
Every NFL team has Tapp on their Radar.
If you ask any Cowgirl fan, they've got at least 3 picks in the 1st round, and have already selected six times! Tapp's been selected twice! E-girls have him tapped once, G-nomes have him slated to tap next! (Sarcasm intended!) There are few unearthed gems out there. If you find a mock draft board right now deeper than 3 rounds, the known names are now known by all 32 teams, and by their 3 or 4 fans! If you find a complete mock draft board with all rounds shown, 2 of those 4 fans of those 32 teams already know, and if they know, the team scouting department knows as well! Mock Drafts are great for listing the prospects, but in no certain order! Teams sometimes target needs as opposed to best player available. I love Mocks for the prospective names, but the B&G rarely seem to draft the way you or I might! |

This is just biased ignorance. Say what you want about VA Tech football, but they stepped up to the plate and cut all ties with Marcus Vick after his brother was the most beloved football player in school history, his brother literally gave millions of dollars back to the school, and Marcus showed that at least physically, he was likely to be one of the top 3 qbs in the country next year in college ball. I applaud the Hokies for having the hootzpa to let go of such a talent based upon principal. That being said, Tapp is too small. The Hokies had another DE a few years ago, Corey Moore (?) I think was his name. He was too small to play DE in the NFL, and so is Tapp. |
Re: Darryl Tapp
Honestly, I'm a Tech fan but don't give them THAT much credit on releasing Marcus. It took a LOT of outside pressure for them to make that decision.

It had be be a tough decision because of michael Vick and all he has done for the school and I think thats what caused the little delay from VT's decision. If you think about Vt football it was Vick that realy put their team on the map. Marcus realy but VT and his brother in a bad situation and I'm sure they spoke with Michael before they announced their decision so he would understand why they had to do what they where doing.

Re: Darryl Tapp
the reason tapp will fall (unless his combine is great) is he's 6'1" and he's not really fast for a pass rushing DE (he's also light at 215). He's got good skills, but his naturals aren't stellar. He may even be better to bulk up and play at DT where height isn't as important and where he'd be very fast for the position. Since we need a DT and a DE, he'd be a good pickup and should be a 2nd or 3rd rounder. at DT he'd have time to adjusst ince we've got a decent 1/2 right now, and if he's instant impact or a good situational pass rusher, we've got a spot for immediate contribution there.

Re: Darryl Tapp
no way he plays defensive end in the nfl with that size

he's actually around 265 which is quite a bit different. |
Re: Darryl Tapp
i brought up drafting tapp in another thread. and whoever called taft a "punk" has no idea what he is talking about. he is the epitome of what virgina tech wishes there players were, a hard worker, never gets into trouble, model citizen, etc.

215? definitely 265 as posted above |
Re: Darryl Tapp
Im a Tapp fan, I just don't think he'll be able to be a force at the next level on DE at 265 when you are facing offensive tackles tipping the scale at over 300 lbs. I hope Im wrong, but he really does remind me of Corey Moore.

I would agree that he needs to be around 285 to hold up in the NFL.

I agree. I don't think Tapp will be that great of a DE. He reminds a lot like David Pollack coming out of UGA last year. Could play end, but would be much better at the OLB position. |
Re: Darryl Tapp
I really thought Corey Moore would have made it in the NFL. God that guy was fast. He and Tapp have got to be similar to Dwight Freeney's size, right?
|
Re: Darryl Tapp
You'd think people would figure out that Freeney spins EVERY TIME.
|
Re: Darryl Tapp
Figuring it out and stopping it are two different things.

in order to play OLB tapp would have to be a very fast DE, but he's about average speed. He's not very good in coverage either, so he'll either figure out DE or bulk up and move inside. |
Re: Darryl Tapp
First off, Daryll Tapp is not a punk. Unless he has a lot of people fooled. Anybody following Big East/ACC football the last few years knows that Tapp is one of the quietest, hardest working players in the conference. Second, this year he was a finalist for the Lott trophy - an award based on personal character as well as excellence on the playing field. He also was a finalist for the Ted Hendricks award, which recognizes the top defensive lineman. Tapp has those intangible features we refer to as heart, determination, passion and pride. He wants to be the best. He pushes himself beyond what number crunching analyst convince themselves of what he should be capable of doing. Having said all that, I think coming out of college Corey Moore was better but since he got shot in the leg early in his career well never know what he was capable of.
I over heard a guy after VT's bowl game call Beemer and VT players a bunch punk's. So I asked him which college team he followed and he said UVA. Then I asked about the UVa player who choped block the BC player after the play was blown dead and only was hit with a one game suspension. He did not have much to say after that. Alot of people like to attack VT because they are jealous of how much they have achieved over the past ten years. As for Tapp I think he will make it in the NFL but he will need to add some pounds to take the every day beating. I'm intrested in seeing what happens with Nimo. He has the speed and talent but his size may be what holds him back. He just kins of reminds me of Rock. |
Re: Darryl Tapp
The knock on a lot of guys coming into the NFL, especially at DE is that they are undersized. I think it's important to remember that these guys' bodies are still going through a physical maturation process. The weight will come in just a few short years. The point is knid of moot though because I don't think he'll be available in the second round. His merits are too noteworthy for teams to pass on him. I see him as a top 25 pick.

Perhaps I am biased as a UVa alum, but I agree. The DUI came BEFORE the Bowl game with Louisville and yet somehow they couldn't find it within themselves to kick him off the team before they won one more game with him. I kind of place Tapp in the same category with Corey Moore (drafted by the Ravens, never replicated college success in NFL), but maybe that is because they both went to VA Tech. I have not seen him play enough, or heard enough from the draft "experts" to pass judgement on him, but remember that Dwight Freeny was also an undersized DE from the Big East (well I guess Tech is now in the ACC) who has done alright for himself. Of course, if Tapp goes out and runs a 4.4 a la Freeny he will be long gone by the time the Skins pick. |

Biases aside, if you watched the VA Tech v. Miami and Tech v. Louisville games you HAVE to question the discipline of the team. They did not come across as very mature athletes or young men. Of course, this is a Redskins board so perhaps these are discussions for another venue. |
Re: Darryl Tapp
remember we're closer to VA tech so we've seen more of them than other players, but i don't think tapp will go top 25 cause of his size and weight (there's other, better hgt/wgt guys with good production that'll be taken first). I think he's also closer to 4.8 than 4.4, but if he does run a 4.4 there's absolutely no way we get him. Judging from previous reports that's unlikely though.

It was that the UVA fans don't have alot of room to say anything after one of their players choped blocked a limping players knee after a play. They made an excuse for the guy and only suspended him for one game. So don't say VT lets players slide when UVA did the same thing and that hit from the UVA player could have ruined the BC players career.

Unless we move up in the draft via trade we won't be in position to draft Tapp.

as of right now he's a low 2nd to low 3rd round pick, which means as of right now we could sit still and still get him. his size and speed are working against him. If he has a good combine showing though and bulks up without slowing down he could really shoot up though. |

I would love to pu Darryl Tapp in the 2nd round and I think he may be around at that point as well.
