Gibbs to give up playcalling
Per Mort on ESPN. He explained that Al Saunders will call the plays and Gibbs will take on more of a CEO position where he will oversee the entire operation and make the GM decisions. This will be the first time in his career that he will call the offensive plays according to Chris Mortensen.

Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
You mean the first time Gibbs won't call the plays right? Saunders has called the plays in kC for four years I thought.

Yeah, that's what I meant. The first time Gibbs won't call the plays, sorry about that. Maybe a little proofreading next time. |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
this could definately be a good thing. while i love gibbs, i think saunders play calling will be more aggressive.
|
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
I agree Wolfeskins. This does a lot of things for the organization:
1) Lets Gibbs micromanage everyone. 2) Helps with Gibbs' health. While it's not a huge concern not running the offense must be a load off and he won't get burned out so quick. 3) Saunders WILL be more aggressive, improve our deep passing game, and bring tips to Bugel that KC's line used to run the ball down everyone's throat. The Saunders hire is perfect and bringing him in and not giving him complete control of the offense (I doubt he'd even come here if he didn't have full control of the offense considering he could be a head coach right now) would be ridiculous. |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
Mort also said the Colts will franchise Reggie Wayne so we will be looking elsewhere for a #2 WR for Saunders to incorporate..
With Saunders having complete play calling control (although I thought Burns called the plays this year with Gibbs having override approval) that should open up the offense dramatically. I think the only times Gibbs will step in will be to tell Saunders to take the air out of the ball some or if he sees something that he thinks they can exploit. |
How do the Colts have enough cap room to keep all these players? IMO the fact that Mannings commanding a cap number of 15 million per year is crippling his own organization. The guy could easily get endorsement deals to compensate for money he gave back to the team. However as long as it makes it harder for the Colts to win a Super Bowl I'm all for it. |

yea, and they need to sign edgerrin james this year because they franchised him last year. whats the average salary of the top 5 wr ? does anyone know ? |

Mort said they will likely let Vanderjagt and E. James go because Wayne is their #1 priority. |

wow, i'm surprised they would let james go. |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
Sounds to me like Gibbs is giving us a glimpse of the future, he's going to make sure things remain on track while Williams and co. take over the coaching duties, basically he's going to hold Williams hand until he can run the team smoothly on his own, smart move.

They've been acting like they were gonna let Edge go since last year. They were saying that they could close the same kind of production out of Dominic Rhodes. I think that's a mistake, but that's the way the Colts have been looking at it since they franchised Edge last season. |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
Does this mean that Saunders will talk to Brunell? Or does it mean that Saunders will talk to Gibbs who will talk to Brunell?
|
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling

I'm not. Not to take anything away from E. James, it's typically easier to replace a running back than it is to develop and work in a new wide receiver. Manning and Wayne have excellent chemistry. Good, serviceable running backs are much easier to come by. |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
RBs are a dime a dozen and their offense is predicated on the pass. They'll stick an average guy in there and be fine.

I'm guessing Saunders will talk to the QB with Gibbs being on the headsets as well. |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
How will the offensive linemen feel about the Saunders philosophey? They seemed to be doing well before the Thomas injury with the smash mouth approach.
|
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
:coach: the colts are going to implode next year shouldn't they have some defensive free agents too? they should have kept marcus washington good thing for us they didn't! :biggthump

hard to believe he has not called plays before this. i wonder how this will affect his work as a coach. there is certainly a learning curve for it. interesting |

yup. and without a running game (mungro is also a free agent but not a franchise back) let's see how well peyton flourishes. |

kc had one of the best lines in the nfl by consensus the past several years. i did not read of any complaints by them.. success has a way of making people happy |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
Does this mean Len Pastabelly will be proved right? Pasta's view has been that the skins won't get to the Super Bowl with Gibbs calling the offensive plays. Now, we can expect a "see, I told you so" piece from Pasta. Though, if Saunders playcalling is what leads us to the big game, I won't care.
|
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
This is kind of a moot discussion anyway since Burns and Breaux were the ones responsible for alot of the playcalling. Pastabelly will never be right about anything.

There is a God!!!! we'll see what happens to Mr Brunell's old ass NOW!!! |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
The article on ESPN.com says that Gibbs wants to focus on personnel moves, such as what to do with Ramsey and LaVar.
Which is fine for the spring time, but come September those won't (or shouldn't) still be issues. So what then? My guess is it will be as others have mentioned it's been in the past, and as other head coaches do it (such as Belichick and Weiss). Saunders will call the play calls and Gibbs will essentially give him full control, but he'll have the right to overturn a decision if he feels it's needed. |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
This is going to be great for us. Does this mean maybe Gibbs becomming our president/GM after his contract is up. Williams becomes head coach and saunders stay as Head coach offense?

Trent Green is actually older than Brunell if you can believe it, Saunders doesn't seem to have a problem with old assed QB's. |

Trent Green was born in 1970, so he's 35. |

Green was born 7/9/70
Brunell was born 9/17/70 So yes, Green is a tiny bit older. |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
Green was born 7/9/70

Brunell has been a start in the leauge since 1995, and taken teams deep into the playoffs and really taken a toll on his body, where as Green really just became a every year in and year out starter in 2001. |

Do you forget our win in wk2 in Dallas? Who's got an arm? Mark Brunell. He's smart, accurate and he used to throwing alot. The biggest advancement will be in the running game. By Saunders being overtly aggressive we'll see Portis make the Pro Bowl. Let's just hope we can move into the playoffs again next season. Killed me today to see the Panthers roll over for the Seahawks. Bet if we were playing either team today we win! Shouldacouldwoulda. Gotta hand it to those PC Seattle fans. Shit was loud. We gotta bring it next season at home. LOUDER than LOUD!!! |
Re: Gibbs to give up playcalling
i like the idea of someone else calling the plays for the simple reason that without having the responsibilty of managing a game, the co ordinator can be alot more aggresive in play calling.alot of times last year,if the defense was on the field alot the skins would run the ball just to give them a blow.

I don't think so with Brunell behind center, the only team we would have beat was Carolina, and that game would have been close. |
