That was a dud interview. Dan P never challenged him on anything. peter just said that he doesn't wield power with other voters like Joe T said he does and that was the end of it.

Peter called Monk a local argument and implied the the football world as a whole does not care that MOnk is not in.

Re: Theismann Vs. Peter King...right now on ESPN Radio

All of my friends who know anything about football are just as puzzled as I am over the fact that Monk isn't in.

Re: Theismann Vs. Peter King...right now on ESPN Radio

This guy is such a hypocrite, he's not voting for Monk because no one outside of DC cares? Yet he pushes for Harry Carson? As if anyone outside of NY can remember the guys name.

It's funny how he backs Curtis martin and say's that he hopes that his anonimity doesn't hurt him on the ballot, sounds a lot like Monk doesn't it.

Russ Grimm over Monk? We all love Russ but lets be real. Monk held all time NFL records, most catches in a season, most consecutive games with a catch, and the all time leader with receptions, ALL TIME!!!!!!

Obviously there is something else there, Monk should have been a first ballot no brainer, and that's why I don't put a lot of stock in popularity contests, such as the pro-bowl and the hall of fame, are they truly about talent? Or just a matter of being one of the boy's?

I'm sure nobody besides redskins fans care whether or not AM is in the HOF.

I"m not surprised the interview was a dud, the DP show itself is a dud. It just not worth listening to anymore.

Re: Theismann Vs. Peter King...right now on ESPN Radio

I've already said to Gmanc and cpayne over IM that sports writers shouldn't hold so much weight in the voting system. It should be up to a number of groups, specifically players, coaches and MOST IMPORTANTLY fans. Just because you write about sports what gives you the authority to or not to immortalize a deserving player?

does anyone know the reasoning behind monk not getting in?his stats support him to the hall

Beemnseven 01-30-2006 02:40 PM

Re: Theismann Vs. Peter King...right now on ESPN Radio

In a nutshell for those that missed it...

Theismann says that Peter King has so much influence among Hall of Fame voters, that since he won't vote Art Monk in, nobody else will either.

Peter King replies --

1. He doesn't have the influence Theismann thinks he does.

2. He's not saying he'll never vote Art Monk in, and that he does keep an open mind on the subject. He admits that there's a compelling argument that Monk should be in, but he'd put Russ Grimm in before Monk. Says that if someone tells him something about Monk that he hasn't heard before, he'll consider it.

3. He's not hearing from opponents and others throughtout the league and other cities that Monk deserves to be in -- it's only from former teammates of Monk, and those in circles around Washington D.C.

There you have it ... and like you've read from other posts, they're right, it wasn't much of an interview. No challenges from Dan Patrick, nothing about the disparity in numbers comparing Art Monk to say, Lynn Swann. Nothing. Pretty lame.

Re: Theismann Vs. Peter King...right now on ESPN Radio

Dumb ass! I will support T.O to be in the Hall of Fame, but monk is not deserving. Doesn't the hall represent the best of the best in the NFL and you want those involved to be respected and instill pride in the game. T.O you have got to be shittin me, true the guy can ball but damn he single handedly has made two organizations he has been associated with look like shit and a complete embarrassment. He's got my vote that is what we are looking for and want to be the example that players have to go off of to get into the Hall of Fame beside greats like Joe Gibbs. Very fitting don't you think.

I could understadn if this guy was simply a hard ass about who to vote in. But he seems like a two bit whore who'll let anyone have a go. Curtis Martin? Harry Carson? Tedy Bruschi? He actually thinks these people deserve to be in the hall! And not Monk? That makes no sense whatsoever. Clearly he is both misguided and must have a problem with Monk. What a sad sack of poo this guy is.
I too know NOT ONE PERSON who thinks that Monk not only should be in the hall but that he is also being royally shafted not having been a first balloter. This seriously one of the most perplexing things in sports today to me. How anyone can think he doesn't deserve to be in is BEYOND beyond me.

I'd have to disagree on that one. Martin has been solid, dependable, and a workhorse, but to say that his career warrants a guaranteed Hall of Fame spot is a little much, in my opinion.

Some guys are great football players who are on the cusp of the Hall, but fall just short. Curtis Martin is exactly that type of player to me.
What bout Bettis?
No. He probably ranks just a bit higher than Martin, if for no other reason than his numbers which are going to finish in the Top Five.

To me, the criteria for establishing a player's spot in the HOF is consistent domination of opponents for several years. Art Monk at many times dominated the game. He held the single season reception record for many years, at a time when 100 or more receptions was unheard of.

If I had a vote, neither Martin nor Bettis would get into the Hall.

I just wondered if you thought maybe two SB appearances, including a possible ring this Sunday, would put Bettis over the top. I'm sort of torn on it.

Just like I'm torn about whether guys like Andre Reed, Henry Ellard, and Jimmy Smith should also join.

martin has definately put together a very impressive career, i'd say people in ny would want him in just as bad as poeple around dc want monk in.

looking at the stats, i don't see how either one of them(monk, martin) can not be voted in.

Re: Theismann Vs. Peter King...right now on ESPN Radio

I'd say Faulk, Monk, Martin, and Bettis are all in...

Isn't Faulk like top-3 all time in combined yards from scrimmage (with Brian Mitchell in there of course too)

Pocket$ $traight 01-30-2006 10:22 PM

Re: Theismann Vs. Peter King...right now on ESPN Radio

Marshall Faulk isn't even a question. Monk, Martin, & Bettis never dominated their position like Faulk. Plus Faulk carried the Rams to a title.

I think that Bettis should get in before Martin. The Steelers have been a contender for years on his shoulders. My problem with Martin is that I have never considered him an elite back (I guess Bettis isn't either but his teams have been consistently better).

Honestly, you could make a case that neither should make it. Monk, should definitely make it before both of them. He has the rings...

to be fair skins052bgr8 was saying it was bs for TO to be considered in the same conversation with Monk and deserving to be in the HOF.

I think PK's argument was pretty weak, cuz I'm sure that for a lot of players going to the HOF, it's mainly just the area around where he played that cares a lot about whether or not said player gets voted in. I know there r a couple non-redskins here and there that I hope get in but the main ones I keep an eye out for are former great Skins and I'm pretty sure most fans of the nfl are like that. All I'm saying is if Darrel Green gets anything like the shaft job Monk has gotten, I will be among the many skins fan sending letter after letter to the HOF and it's voters and will even do protests if need be.

yeah I agree cuz while I think Martin is a heck of a rb, Monk retired in the top 5 in all of the important wr statistics and in some cases even the all time leader at the time and that's despite the team having several good recievers and the team running the ball the majority of the time.

Saying Harry Carson should be in is like saying Mel Kauffman should be in. These New York guys really live in a world of their own. What we need to do is pick an anti-Monk voter at random and give the guy the business for a solid year and then pick another and so on.
