Hail to Washington Walmart

So when the P.C. police finally get to Danny Boy and force him to change the team name, does anyone think that he'll go this route and just sell the team name to the highest bidder?

A co-worker and I think that in a few years we could be signing "Hail to the Walmart!" on Sundays.

Some other idea: Washington Fightin' Goldenpalacecasino.com
Exxon Mobil Drillers of Washington
Washington Haliburton Shotguns
Washington Ronald McDonald's presented by Coca-Cola
The Pepsi Generation NeXt of Washington
The Ragin' Trump Real Estates of Washington

ok, I need to get back to work before I get fired, but any other suggestions?

This may get me flamed, but I love soccer. However, this is the lamest thing I have ever seen. It just shows how hurting MLS is for cash.

How about The Washington UAE Port Authority...

Long Live DC United!
Go Arsenal!

Thats a soccer team which struggle in the US. Danny is making to much money to sell off any of the team.

Nah Danny will just keep raising ticket prices before that happens.

ArtMonkDrillz 03-09-2006 01:14 PM

Re: Hail to Washington Walmart

What if he's forced to change the team name, you don't think he'd sell it jsut to make a few extra bucks? I think that the Washington Orbit.com's has a nice ring to it.

(ps, this was sort of a joke idea because my job is boring)

imagine how much money you could get for renaming the team... tens of millions a year at least.

No joke - just renaming the stadium brought in a few extra million a year.

Correction - $7.6 million per year

Re: Hail to Washington Walmart

the team gets mentioned soo much more often than the stadium (daily on nfl network and espn during the season), so you'd figure you might get 30+mill a year from that... some crazy number.

onlydarksets 03-09-2006 02:13 PM

Re: Hail to Washington Walmart

Yeah, I think it's going to be a silly-high number if it ever happens. I'm sure the league would demand a huge cut of that, though!

Hi ya'll, long-time lurker, first-time poster.

Not that this is a real serious thread, but I have major doubts that the revenue from team naming rights would equilibrate to, or exceed, the revenue from trademarked team merchandise sales.

The whole point of the recent lawsuit against the "Redskins" trademark, was to usurp the copyright protection on the name. Doing so would effectively force the Danny to drop the name since he would no longer be raking in the millions in merchandising revenue associated with the Redskins name. As I seem to recall, the Skins are in the top 3 of team merchandise sales along with Pittsburg and Dallas.

Danny won't sell the naming rights to the team under any circumstances, it just doesn't make fiscal sense. Even if eventually the name is un-copyrighted, he'll pick something different and copyright that.

Re: Hail to Washington Walmart

Welcome!

What you say makes sense, unless he can recoup in licensing fees from a "name brand" what he would lose in licensing fees by owning the name. I don't know what the numbers are, so I can't say if that's a likely scenario or not.

if they were the walmarts, people would still buy the new jersey's... though there'd obviously be a backlash and losts sales of some sort.

Re: Hail to Washington Walmart

definitely. i mean regardless of "love" for a team, changing the name would instantly cause people to lose the connection they have with the team. not necessarily making them worse fans, but if the skins had to change their name it would be horrible. its got a LOT of tradition behind it.

not only that, if you want to be pissed, i mean the cowboys must be upset also. REAL cowboys are pretty wholesome guys and NOT crack users.

bjschmonsees, I am a big soccer fan too and was initially pretty appalled with such a commercial name. Then I realized it was bestowed on the Metroturds and was pretty excited about the whole thing. I have a feeling the screaming eagles and barra brava will have a lot of fun with the slogan "Red Bull, it gives you wings" all next season.

JWsleep 03-10-2006 12:19 AM

Re: Hail to Washington Walmart

Given how much Redbull is planning to pump into the league, I guess it's an ok deal for MLS. But it is pretty silly.

Wonder how long before other teams and sports follow suit? Also, I'm still surprised that the NFL, NBA, etc haven't sold uniform advertising like they have in Soccer. There's lots of money in that--when people buy their team's jerseys, they buy the advertisement as well.

USA Germany 2006!!!

Re: Hail to Washington Walmart

The team will change its name when the term 'redskin' becomes offensive to the fan base here in the DC metro area. If this were Oklahoma, it would be a more sensitive matter. But it's not, so it isn't.

Some people don't seem to understand that 'Washington Redskins' is ingrained in the culture of the area. We are all Redskins. It's all positive. Most of my heros are Redskins. To change the name is to give up the fight song. Oh H311 no, no, no. Hail to the Googles just doesn't work.

Someday the fundamental croud will go after the Washington Wizards for devil worship.

rant over

Re: Hail to Washington Walmart

Well, Red Bull already owns a soccer team in Austria... now called Red Bull Salzburg.
They totally destroyed ALL of the tradition the club had... new colors, homepage totally revised (former championship etc. deleted), forbids coming to games in the old colors and so on.
I´d say, the Metrobulls-fans will have to deal the same things...
for further information here is the link to the "oldschool" fans of Austria Salzburg, english HP version: www.violett-weiss.at

Even though I´m not THE total knower of Redskins History, I think renaming a team is just plain stupid, no matter what money comes out.

Re: Hail to Washington Walmart

It's not a corporate name but the Tampa Bay Devil Rays announced about a month ago that they are changing the team name following the 2006 season.

One of the leading choices is to name the team after a former Tampa minor league team, so starting in 2007 the Devil Rays would be known as the Tampa Tarpons

Tampa Tarpons? Not to be crude, but say that 10 times fast and you're not going to be saying Tarpons

That Guy 03-11-2006 05:04 PM

Re: Hail to Washington Walmart
