Redskins Sign Todd Collins

Washington now has a logjam at quarterback. With Mark Brunell as the starter, and Patrick Ramsey and Jason Campbell on the roster, the went out and got Chiefs backup Todd Collins to the tune of a two-year, $2.5 million contract with a signing bonus of $450,000.

I don't know about logjam. I mean Ramsey should be gone soon.

I would imagine that the Ramsey trade it pretty much done w/ someone. (Jets, maybe the Raiders) either that, or we are just going to cut him tonight.

well it looks like if ramsey doesnt go to the jets, no one else is going to want him.

Re: Redskins Sign Todd Collins

An excellent move by the 'Skins. Collins is already familiar with Saunders' offense, so if Campbell struggles and/or Brunell goes down, we have insurance. Let's hope it doesn't come to that though.

Glad to see this happen. Best wishes to Ramsey.

Re: Redskins Sign Todd Collins

the Raiders could actually be a pretty good fit for Ramsey given Al Davis likes to throw the ball down the field. Ramsey is pretty good at throwing deep, but needs to improve on the intermediate routes. I hope he gets a shot to play somewhere.

I feel a little better - I was getting a little nervous wondering what the Skins were going to do for the third QB.

Re: Redskins Sign Todd Collins

What's up folks ! New to the game but I'm gonna help keep the party going. Todd Collins is a good pick up, he can help Jason Campbell learn the nuances of Saunders' system. Good Luck to Patrick 'til whoever he plays for battles the skins ! HAIL !

Re: Redskins Sign Todd Collins

Welcome! I agree, JC is going to need help, so the pickup makes sense. He's old, though, so that's a concern.

Re: Redskins Sign Todd Collins

They should not have announced this until Ramsey was traded. Why would any team not just wait for the eventual release of Ramsey now? The Redskins should have clung to the idea that if a trade does not work out that they are going to bring Ramsey back again next year. The redskins alwasy seem to show their hand too much when they have a player to trade. I know that teams probably know anyway that the skins would not bring ramsey back next year but there is something to be said for thinking somethign and having all doubt removed.

That's true, but us showing our hand doesn't change the facts that the Raiders and Jets need a QB and that nobody was offering us anything higher than a 5th rounder (plus a possible 3rd). They might have upped their offer if they sensed a disparity in bargaining positions, but I think it's clear that PR isn't going to fetch much on the open market.

We are still not sure if there is already a deal for Ramsey complete and just hasnt been reported yet. Maybe thats why the Skins signed him possibly knowing they already have a deal that lets Ramsey go.

They probably already have something in the works, perhaps part of a deal for Abraham?

This isn't news anyway, who didn't expect Collins to be signed and Ramsey to be dealt?? This isn't exactly a shocker.

todd collins will never see the field, campbell will be the backup at least. but what collins can do is help campbell with the system and tutor him. i like the addition

Check the first post of this thread for Collins.

Ramsey news is still a rumor at this point.

Here's the link to the site where I saw the Todd Collins signing. The Ramsey thing I thought was just a rumor right now.

No, it's not a shocker at all. I just thought they should have kept Collins on the back burner until the Ramsey thing was finished. It's not like other teams were beating down his door. Why even trade a 4th or 5th round pick for Patrick now that the skins have completely closed the door on the possibility of Ramsey being on the roster next year. There is a difference between everyone thinking something and having it spelled out for them. This is not a big deal...I just wish the skins played it closer to the vest some times.

Who knows what's going on behind the scenes though.

A deal will go down for Ramsey regardless, and his trade value won't be harmed by this announcement.

Beemnseven 03-14-2006 03:54 PM

Re: Redskins Sign Todd Collins

I'm with Celts on this one, too.

If I'm the Jets, I break off all trade talks with the Redskins to get Patrick Ramsey, knowing full well that he's out of favor with Gibbs and they won't keep four quarterbacks on their roster anyway. In the process, I save my 4th round pick. They know that other teams aren't exactly breaking down the doors at Redskin Park for Ramsey. Especially now that Miami and the Saints have their QB situations locked up.

Add this to the fact that the Jets are still probably going to have a choice between either Vince Young or Matt Leinhart in the draft -- and they're not getting rid of Pennington yet either.

Not saying this is exactly how it will do down, but we're talking basic common sense here.

Re: Redskins Sign Todd Collins

Then if I'm the Skins I say fine and keep Ramsey until training camp when inevitably a starter will go down with injury.

The Collins announcement isn't going to hurt anything, teams already knew the Redskins' plans.

"Inevitably" a starter is going down to injury?

Gibbs will not have Brunell, Collins, Campbell AND Ramsey on the roster come July.

I don't think he's saying that our starting qb will go down to injury, i think he's saying one of the starters on our team will go down to injury. It happens to every team. We'd have to be real lucky for it not to happen to us.

No, I'm pretty sure he was talking about QBs. Unless Ramsey can play long snapper or third-down situational running back or something.

Certainly, just about every team will get hit with an injury here and there. But nobody's keeping 4 quarterbacks on their roster, that's for sure.

Yeah, but it looks like the draft will allow them Vince Young or Matt Leinhart. And they haven't given up on Chad Pennington yet.

Either way, the Jets won't have to come crawling on their hands and knees begging for Patrick Ramsey now.

Re: Redskins Sign Todd Collins

BTW, I don't think the skins made this anouncement, for what it's worth. Probably some snitch or other. Whatever--it's clear that Ramsey is gone one way or another, so if the market drops, no one is going to trade. Cest la vie in the NFL, especially with both Culpepper and Brees on the market, and some hot QBs in the draft. Not a great situation for Pat and the skins, but thems the breaks.

Just wondering--is Collins any good?

John Clayton said on Sportscenter that the Jets are now only offering a 7th for Ramsey. The skins lost all hand in this Ramsey trade by announcing a Collins signing before the Ramsey deal. I just don't get what the hurry was to lock up Collins...

Hasn't been the case from the start though? The Jets were offering a 7th, we wanted a 4th. Hence no trade
