What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
Just curious... It's the offseason and I need something to talk about:
few questions for the forum 1) What is he actually doing during the season? (anyone have any insight?) 2) How long is he going to stay? (does he even need to?) 3) Is Daniel Snyder a good owner? (we've heard it from the media "spends to much" blah blah... but has Dan snyder finally proven a himself) 4) Who's our competition in 07? (honestly who will beat us next year?... in my opinion no-one in the NFC east) |
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
Good question I was wondering, bc I am assuming that Sanders will take a big role in the offensive this year. I do not know where it leaves Gibbs, beside a moral leader. I am not saying that having Gibbs is bad. Believe me I love having Gibbs, it brings life back to the team. But it is interesting trying to see how everything will fit.

Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
Gibbs is just the head coach... Al Saunders runs the offense and Gregg Williams runs the defense.

what's included in head coach? just a title? |
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
he's the leader. the big guy. the head honcho. the big cheese.
Oversees everything and make sure everybody does their job... and helps keep the moral of the team positive. |
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
1. calling all the shots, having final say on a major moves, and he is the reason Saunders came here, and G. Williams stayed here.
2. he stays at least 2 more years, if we win it all this year he is gone 3. Snyder is an improving, as of right now, no he is not a good owner, he is an okay owner. 2 playoff appearances in 6 years is not good. 4. OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD - the giants just signed 3 defensive backs, and I'm sure it is in retaliation for our WR signings, they will be tough. Eli is only going to get better. Seattle is a good team still. Arizona might be tough if there D can step up and if they get Vernon Davis. Tampa could be strong again, Simms is only going to get better, and I would watch out for the rams, the offense is still there and they got some good defensive players. |
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
It's pretty old school to for a head coach not to call the offense nor defense... but of course back then, it wasn't a coordinator calling the plays either, it was the QB.

correct. |
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
Joe Gibbs essentially runs the team. More importantly, though, he makes the team run smoothly and efficiently. A case example, Randle-El is being courted by MANY different teams, but at 12:05 he gets a call from Joe Gibbs personally. Randle-El is impressed. BUT, what impresses Randle-El more?...Joe Gibbs asks to speak with Randle-El's wife. It is the little things that Joe Gibbs does, but essentially he makes the Redskins a team and instills that something extra that really makes a formidable team.
So, what exactly is Joe Gibbs' job? I cannot answer that...but, what does he do for our team? I would try to put a value on it, but like the Visa commercial goes...it's PRICELESS! |

Worst offensive outing ever in a playoff game. We had zero, no offense... now with a boosted receiving corps and a potential superstar QB... with weapons like portis, cooley, moss, sellers, the list goes on. Our defense will be better w/ the addition of Arch. + carter. No-one in the NFC will beat us. Going 5-1 last year with a team everyone can agree is not as talented as this years team. We'll go 6-0 in NFC east. |

Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
gibbs is the face of the team, he runs all the PR (insane amounts of interviews) and makes sure everyone gets along. he can also over rule decisions of any kind and makes suer everyone does their job and has what they need (players, assistants etc)...
|
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
danny so far (since gibbs came here) has shut up and signed checks, and we haven't lost a player we've gone after yet. so over the last two years i'd say he has been a good owner.

I totally agree. I think Snyder has matured. He was fresh in the NFL (2000) and just went on a rampage and didn't have any guidance. The smartest thing he's done is give gibbs control. As far as being a good owner.... well we have Joe Gibbs, Al Saunders, Greg Williams and a staff unlike any other. I'd say he's done a fine job (as of recent) and he's gone above and beyond expectation as an owner. We're a superbowl contender now, and we haven't been since 1992. |
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
I have to agree with what someone said earlier....the giants will be a formidable foe next season, and perhaps our biggest threat. But lets not forget at the begining of last season the entire NFC east seemed as if they would stellar. Then McNabb was hurt and TO shitted on the eagles.... and Im not sure why but Dallas faded too. But the NFC east is always a tough division and I wouldnt be surprised if they all give us a run for our money.....But RobH Id tend to agree with you the Redskins will dominate this season. Its our year....and 6-0 in the division doesnt seem too far fetched
|
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
Yeah I have to give a lil "HAIL" to danny, he's signing players that make sense, and perhaps this is due to Gibbs' guidance, but hey he did get Gibbs to come back, which set up this stellar coaching trio....so Danny is the man...I wouldnt want any other owner...who else flies all their freeagent prospects in by personal jet....what other team has an online video stream of newly signed players going from press confrence to interview I love the redskins, and Danny is doing a good job.

Other than that, I can't see that Al Saunders + Greg Williams are not sufficient enough to win a super bowl. Bottom Line, Joe Gibbs is why there here... But those who are here, are why we win. |
Joe Gibbs essentially runs the team. More importantly, though, he makes the team run smoothly and efficiently.
I like the way Winskins put it! Joe Jackson Gibbs is the president & head coach of the Washington Redskins. He always said his mission was to set up the organization so that it would win on a sustained basis. That means:

upgraded talent on the field
upgraded coaching for superior game planning and talent evaluation
rational salary cap structure.
So to answer your questions:

As the leader,he sets the tone, sets the goals, gets everyone, including the front office, moving in the same directions as a cohesive unit. Building teams is a full time effort.
He will stay as president for his five year contract. No one ever expected he would coach for those five years. You best believe both Gregg and Al know who's the boss! Gibbs is the only man Snyder respects enough to keep his hands off talent decisions.
Daniel Snyder became a good owner the day he hired Joe Gibbs -- and left him alone to remake the team. After the playoffs, Gibbs was asked the reason why the Skins did so well. He listed Daniel Snyder as #1 on his list. Look at how aggressively the Skins moved this offseason. A lot of that credit has to rub off on Snyder.
In the NFC East, I worry most about the Giants. Their FA moves are focused on the secondary. Their DBs could be attacked last year, especially if you held off their pass rush. Li'l Eli has more savvy and will be less prone to mistakes. Tiki Barber is the real reason that offense works. I don't know where Phily's head is. Donovan McNabb's interview during super bowl week revealed a lot more damage to the locker room than thought. May take Dr. Phil to fix it. Their FA moves are focused on the line and I can't believe they weren't more aggressive going for a WR (Keyshaun?). They are always a threat if McNabb is healthy and they recover from TO. Could be very tough if Lavar signs with them. Dallas' o-line problem will get a lot better when Flozell Adams returns. The Cowboys could score last season, but weren't consistent. They don't have the talent to keep TO happy, meaning that Owens could both help them and hurt them in a big way. The Panthers, Jaguars, Bucs & Colts are on the schedule and bear watching. If you watch the dallas-redskins highlight video.... even wynn gets a sack or two. With carter and Daniels at helm.... good luck my friend. Dallas poses no threat.... i can hear an arguement that NYG will pose a threat... but NYG will have no answer to Williams and his team. Eli may have looked good..... but a rodgers/springs/arch/taylor db backfield will be a challenge to any offense. Especially with the afformentioned DEs breathing down his neck. Good luck bledsoe.... good luck Mcnabb, good luck... ELI... godspeed "rest" of NFC east... you'll certainly need it. The Washington Redskins will be a force to be reckoned with. Am I violating Tony K rules by saying "Jump on the bandwagon". Maybe So. but the redskins will beat out any competition. Playoffs come and we'll have fine debate going. But for super bowl conteders: Skins, Rams, NYG, Pitt, Colts, & Panters. Other than that.... lets get a 4th trophy. |
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
Gibbs makes the team much more potent than the sum of its parts. That he isn't calling the plays anymore doesn't mean he doesn't have a tremendous impact on the team. Without Gibbs, I would not be so confident about 2006 looking so great. Sure, we've got loads of talent and good coordinators, but, without a doubt, he's what puts us over the top.

Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
4. OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD - the giants just signed 3 defensive backs, and I'm sure it is in retaliation for our WR signings, they will be tough. All the Giants have done is add depth to their secondary, they still don't have three good enough corners to match up with our receivers in a spread formation or even a 2 wr set. Santana will burn any single coverage. The Giants signed Madison, who is the most noteworthy. But he is aging and might struggle if he plays #1. McQuarters can be a good nickel corner, his upside is that he is a good special teams kick returner. However beyond that none of the other secondary positions the Giants have just added are anything to worry about. Quentin Harris played in every game for the 3rdseason in a row for Card's and had only 21 tackles (16 solo), three passes defensed...i'm so scared. And Bell, the other corner they signed has never started a game. Enough said. |
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
The Redskins are creating a new wave in coaching. If you look at how the team will be next year you will understand what I mean. What Coach Gibbs created last year, with Head Coach Offense and Head Coach Defense, he attempted to divide the Head Coaching Job. Coach Bugel was HCO as we all know and Coach Williams was HCD. With the hiring of Al Saunders he will become the new HCO, and Coach Williams will stay HCD.
Coach Gibbs said in his press conference when introduciing Al Saunders, that he would maintain a more figurehead role with the Redskins, but continue to be team President. If Daniel Snyder is smart (and he is, he knows that he cannot wrong Joe Gibbs) the team for atleast the remainder of Coach Gibbs contract will have two head coaches, splitting their respect duties to their respective sides, offense and defense. Joe Gibbs is setting the team up to have Al Saunders and Greg Williams to be the Head Coache"s" of the Redskins for awhile, and there are other teams that will look to this to be an interesting concept. Coach Gibbs needs to stay for one reason, to keep Daniel Snyder in check, and as long as he is not stressing himself out or loosing sleep like he did back in the 80s, he will be here for some time. For who is going to be our competition next year, do not count out the New York Giants, or the Eagles. Sure the Eagles went 6-10, T.O. is gone and the pieces of their team that led them to 4 straight NFC Championships, are still there. Eli Manning is maturing as a quarterback in this league and if you doubted him as a rookie, you better not doubt him now. He has the command of his offense and that team, every player on that team believes in Eli and that team is going straight to the top. The Redskins still have alot of work to do, and with the coaches that have been put in place and this free agent firesale that they have done so far, they should win the NFC East, as long as they stay competetive. |
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
Gibbs is like a high level manager in the corporate world. He delegates to his staff that he has total trust and respect in, and his main job is to oversee the entire operation. The addition of Saunders will free him up to be more involved with special teams and the defense, but I would expect his primary involvement will still be with the offense.

Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
gibbs isnt micromanaging, and thats what makes him successful.

Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
Joe Gibbs job is to win and who knows how better than Joe Gibbs. The guy has won 3 championships in 2 different sports. Who else in any sport has done that?
He is here for the full 5 years and longer if necessary. Most people forget the resaon he came her. He is here because his son wanted to get into coaching. He set J.D up with the Nascar team and now he is getting Coy started in football. Not only a great coach but a great dad. |
Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?
joe gibbs is the leader of the pack, makes sure everything runs smooth.
priceless would be the right way to put it,heck he can form a hockey team and win the stanley cup,he,s that good.dan synder is willing to win a championship and it shows for the money he puts out but this time he,s having a better understanding with the coach by his side in helping get the players he needs to put out on the field.how long will he stay he signed on for 5 years and i fully expect him to honor his 5 year contract.who will be our competition in 07 it can come from anbody we play but if this team jells quickly look out nobody will stop us but there will be somebody out there.nfc east be warned.. joe,s job is to oversee operations. |
