FA QB mama-drama (3/14)
Alright, plenty of QB movement today, quick recap:

Culpepper traded to Dolphins for a 2nd round pick. The 'Phins release Gus Ferotte shortly afterwards (to avoid paying a 300k roster bonus), and they may now be looking for a 1 year vet for insurance.

After the Dolphins made their choice of Culpepper over Brees (probably due to contract issues), Brees Signs a 6 year $60mill deal with the Saints. which will pay him an $8mill SB and 2$mill base salary in 2006 followed by a $12mill option bonus (presumeably) if the saints are happy with him after the season.

The third domino to fall is that the Saints are now shopping the #2 pick. Best guesses are that they want to stay near the top of the first round to get M Williams (DE) and additional picks.

Lions Sign Kitna (bengals starter turned backup) four 4 years (3.5mill SB, 10.5mill deal), and announce an open competition for the starter's job in Detriot. Meanwhile, Palmer says he'll miss the guy (:().

After the signing of Kitna, the Lions still want to sign McCown (for a 3-way? err.. 3-way competition?). Martz loves seeding a good (and prolonged) QB controversy. None of these guys are great, but they're all close enough to give fans plenty of options for why they should hate whoever happens to be under center at the time and how easy it would be to fix the situation with a constant QB carousel.

Meanwhile, the Raiders have McCown in town for a visit. They need to get someone.

Bengals are looking more like they'll be replacing Kitna with J Martin (rams #3 QB in 2006) in the #2 QB role. A bit scary since he stunk pretty bad last year and Palmer may not be ready to start the season.
The Saints' signing obviouly has the most far reaching implications regarding the draft. |
Re: FA QB mama-drama (3/14)
In the mean time, where does all of this leave poor Patrick Ramsey? I guess he will eventually get picked up to be a backup somewhere else, like he was with the Skins last year. His starting days are over.
|
Re: FA QB mama-drama (3/14)
MIA should keep Frerotte and Culpepper. Kitna is getting a raw deal. He should've demanded a trade after CIN announced that Palmer was taking over.
|
Re: FA QB mama-drama (3/14)
they may be. the Lions aren't going to trade a pick for him and the Raiders don't seem to care.
The Dolphins still need short term insurance ssince Gus is gone, and the Jets are also interested (also as insurance). Those are the best chances he has to start. |

I wonder if Arizona would give us anything of value for Ramsey. Who's their backup QB now that McCown is gone?

Re: FA QB mama-drama (3/14)
Alright, here's today's update:
Lions | Harrington wants out Wed, 15 Mar 2006 11:47:36 -0800 Tom Kowalski, of mLive.com, reports Detroit Lions QB Joey Harrington has told the Lions' front office and coaching staff that he does not want to play in Detroit. The Lions have been in talks with free agent QB Josh McCown (Cardinals), which could allow the team to move Harrington. Eagles | Garcia agrees to deal Wed, 15 Mar 2006 10:31:23 -0800 Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Philadelphia Eagles and free agent QB Jeff Garcia (Lions) have agreed in principle to a deal. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Saints | Brooks released Wed, 15 Mar 2006 16:15:00 -0800 The NFL Network reports the New Orleans Saints have released QB Aaron Brooks, making him an unrestricted free agent. Dolphins | Culpepper passes physical Wed, 15 Mar 2006 12:20:42 -0800 ESPNews reports Miami Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper (knee) passed his physical Wednesday, March 15, which makes the trade from the Minnesota Vikings for a 2006 second-round draft choice complete. Saints | Brees' signing would not discourage Leinart from coming Wed, 15 Mar 2006 12:42:44 -0800 Jimmy Smith, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports Southern California QB Matt Leinart's agent, Leigh Steinberg, said the New Orleans Saints' signing of QB Drew Brees will not deter his client from coming to New Orleans if the team selects him with the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft. "From Matt's perspective, we have always assumed there would be a veteran starter with any franchise that drafted him," Steinberg said, "and (assumed) he would not be the immediate starter, wherever he would go, and spending some time learning has proven to be advantageous for a number of the best quarterbacks in football." so garcia moves to philly, harrington wants out (with the possibility of 3 average QBs in town), brooks is finally out, and leinhart would rather go #2 than #3 or lower. |
Re: FA QB mama-drama (3/14)
Dolphins | Team has interest in re-signing Frerotte
Wed, 15 Mar 2006 20:58:11 -0800 Armando Salguero, of the Miami Herald, reports the Miami Dolphins have interest in re-signing free agent QB Gus Frerotte (Dolphins) to serve as the team's No. 2 quarterback. Dolphins | Team restructures Culpepper's contract Wed, 15 Mar 2006 20:57:47 -0800 Armando Salguero, of the Miami Herald, reports Miami Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper restructured his contract Wednesday, March 15. The team turned what was supposed to be a $6 million bonus and $2 million base salary in 2006 into a $7 million bonus and $1 million base. The new contract has a cap savings of nearly $5 million. |
Re: FA QB mama-drama (3/14)
Packers | Latest team to show interest in McCown
Wed, 15 Mar 2006 22:09:03 -0800 Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports the Green Bay Packers have expressed interest in free agent QB Josh McCown (Cardinals) and may host him for a visit. Bills | Team to visit with Nall Wed, 15 Mar 2006 22:04:23 -0800 Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports free agent QB Craig Nall (Packers) will visit with the Buffalo Bills Thursday, March 16. more teams looking for QBs not named ramsey. At least PR is going to meet with the bucs now. |
Re: FA QB mama-drama (3/14)
Lions | Team will have competition for starting quarterback role
Thu, 16 Mar 2006 09:38:37 -0800 Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna will compete with QB Josh McCown for the starting quarterback role. Lions | Harrington likely released Thu, 16 Mar 2006 09:38:14 -0800 Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Detroit Lions QB Joey Harrington will likely get released from the team. Harrington is due a $4 million roster bonus on June 15 and is scheduled to have a base salary of $4.5 million for the 2006 season. His release would save the team approximately $5.4 million in salary cap space. Lions | McCown signed to two-year contract Thu, 16 Mar 2006 09:37:51 -0800 Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Detroit Lions have signed free agent QB Josh McCown (Cardinals) to a two-year contract worth $6 million. The deal will pay him $4 million in 2006 between his signing bonus and base salary. not unexpected. Ramsey is now the premeire QB on the market with brooks, and soon harrington (who's the biggest bust of the 3). Ramsey is the least likely to make mistakes, so maybe now he'll have value to the teams that lost on mccown. A couple teams prefer ferotte, but he should find a home soon, and there's a good chance it'll be with the vikes instead of back in miami. |

Vikings | Wilf and Culpepper trade shots
Thu, 16 Mar 2006 10:35:30 -0800 Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Miami Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper and Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf blamed each other for the way Culpepper's career in Minnesota came to an end. Culpepper said, "Up until March 6, I felt I was going to be a Minnesota Viking. It really wasn't about money. It was about the principle of the whole thing. The way I see myself is way more important than any dollar amount that someone can throw at me." Wilf claims, "We tried everything to have him be our leader. But it seemed like a lot of things that happened last year, between the injury and the (Love Boat) incident, he felt it was time to move on. … His attitude has been building up since we asked him to work out up here. He decided, against everyone's suggestion, that he was going to do things independently on his own." I don't know who title'd this blurb, but that is SERIOUSLY weak smack. |

Packers | Team will likely extend deadline for Favre's roster bonus
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 00:02:44 -0800 Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports the Green Bay Packers will likely extend the deadline for QB Brett Favre's $3 million roster bonus. The bonus is due Monday, March 20, but might get pushed back while he considers retirement. The terms of the contract state he would become an unrestricted free agent if the bonus is not paid, but both sides have an understanding that the deadline will be delayed while Favre decides his future with the team. |
Re: FA QB mama-drama (3/14)
Bears | Team to visit with Griese
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 05:36:49 -0800 Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears plan to visit with free agent QB Brian Griese (Buccaneers) perhaps as soon as the end of the weekend. If he signs with the Bears, Griese would begin as the No. 2 quarterback behind starting QB Rex Grossman, but eventually might push him for the starting job. Griese still is rehabilitating his left knee after tearing the ACL and MCL in an Oct. 16 game against the Miami Dolphins. He is expected to be ready for training camp but would have to pass a physical. |

Lions | More about Harrington's upcoming release
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 05:48:06 -0800 Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions QB Joey Harrington left Detroit in January after the 2005 season thinking he might need a fresh start somewhere else, even if it meant giving up millions of dollars and accepting a backup job. When the new coaching staff came in and the Lions showed him support, Harrington was caught off-guard. When he walked into the Lions' Allen Park headquarters last week for "quarterback school" with offensive coordinator Mike Martz, he just got the feeling the damage was done. He couldn't buy back into the idea that he could lead the Lions to victory because the team chemistry was too bad. He expressed his concerns, and the Lions agreed to let him go. Harrington is expected to be traded or released by the weekend. |
Re: FA QB mama-drama (3/14)
Rams | Frerotte to sign
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 09:18:10 -0800 Greg A. Bedard, of the Palm Beach Post, reports the St. Louis Rams have reached a tentative agreement to sign free agent QB Gus Frerotte (Dolphins), according to a league source. The agreement is expected to become official Friday, March 17. Terms of the contract were not known. |

Man if we didn't sign Todd Collins, I'd say grab Gus Frerotte. He was a fun player... funny player too. :p

Packers | Signs point to Favre returning
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 17:41:12 -0800 Rick Braun, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, believes Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre will return for the 2006 season and is just looking for a reason to return to the team. He feels that if Favre really was going to retire, he would have done so by now. Favre has gone about this offseason with his normal routine of golfing, hunting, and mowing his lawn. |

Ravens | Team may wait until after NFL Draft to pursue a QB
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 20:13:46 -0800 Jamison Hensley, of the Baltimore Sun, reports the Baltimore Ravens have to decide when to pursue another veteran quarterback. They can wait another month to see what happens to Tennessee Titans QB Steve McNair or begin to pursue free agent QBs Kerry Collins (Raiders) and Brian Griese (Buccaneers) right now. According to a league source, the Ravens have discussed the possibility of not adding a veteran quarterback until after the NFL draft, which is the earliest the Titans would consider cutting McNair. There is not a clear consensus within the Ravens on either Collins or Griese, the source said. Also, there's no guarantee that the Titans will cut McNair. mcnair isn't getting cut, i'd pursue collins ASAP as he's the only clear starter left and he'd be pretty cheap. |

"Somewhere there is a buy-in factor. I just didn't think that was the case," Childress said. "Right from the beginning. As I mentioned, I never had a conversation with him about this football team. It was always about what he needed financially and money. I never heard team, I always heard me and I and, 'I need $10 million. I'm a $10 million-dollar-a-year quarterback.'" finally, some better smack. |

The source did not know what date the new deadline is, but it is likely that will be the date the Packers will expect a decision from Favre on his future with the team. Sat, 18 Mar 2006 08:28:26 -0800 Harvey Fialkov, of the Miami Sun-Sentinel, reports St. Louis Rams QB Gus Frerotte is unhappy with the way the Miami Dolphins handled his release from the team. Frerotte said, "Personally, I don't think things were handled the right way. After playing 16 games, winning nine after they only won [four] the year before, and then to just kind of be put on the back burner, that was kind of tough." Frerotte was released shortly after the Dolphins acquired QB Daunte Culpepper from the Minnesota Vikings. |

Lions | Harrington sabotaged team's "quarterback school"
Sat, 18 Mar 2006 10:41:45 -0800 Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions QB Joey Harrington played a big role in getting the team to agree to release or trade him. Several people close to the situation claim Harrington sabotaged his appearance during the team's "quarterback school" with offensive coordinator Mike Martz. During classroom sessions, Harrington put forth little effort when asked to go to the board to break down plays. He was very lethargic and uncooperative during the sessions and Martz quickly realized Harrington had no desire to be there. |

that's what i thought... then again his whole team hates him anyways (then again, maybe this kind of sh*t is the reason why).
what was he thinking? If i bomb here, someone else will hand me a starting job? He was on even footing with the lions and would have had a shot to win it back, but now he's going to have to go be a backup (for sure) for at least a couple years. |

Sun, 19 Mar 2006 06:10:10 -0800 Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports the Detroit Lions are checking to see if any team may be interested in trading for disgruntled QB Joey Harrington. O'Hara estimates the Lions could receive a fourth- or fifth-round draft pick in exchange for Harrington. WAAAAA??? apparently they haven't been paying very close attention to reality. unlike ramsey, harrington's team HATES him and (also unlike ramsey) he's going to be owed a 4+mill bonus if he isn't dropped soon. |
