Not exactly. Williams is to be paid a $1 million bonus if he is on the staff and doesn't fill our head coaching vacancy, which makes him extremely likely to be the next coach. But there are no guarantees.

I'm sure that, unless we wished a multi-million dollar fine, we'd conduct an interview process that included appropriate representation from divergent minority groups. Then we'd hire Williams.

Actually, if Gibbs was to retire tomorrow, Williams would be named the interim coach, which would allow us to avoid any interviews until after this season. At that time, we would know if it was worth us paying him the bonus to not be the head coach.

its not in his contract. It says if he's not named the next head coach, he gets
1 million dollars.

saunders has the leadership qualities of wet cardboard. He one of those great OCs, terrible HC guys. Williams on the other hand (though gruff) has leadership, and with a good OC could do well... he also seems to be good at talent evaluation.

I dont want to even think about him leaving. I hope he coaches till he is 100. I mean I am still at awe that he is back.

I don't know about that. I think that he gets 1 million if he is not chosen.

that'd be illegal ;) the option bonus just shows that he's the preferred candidate.

Let's just enjoy Joe while he's here. He has 3 more years on his contract which I believe he will fulfill. Then, it will be Gregg Williams' team. Until then, let's win 3 in a row, baby!

Re: heir to the throne

What is good about this situation is - Gibbs has the time to prep someone to take over for him after he quits coaching and probably becomes solely team president. But he may have a hard decision in Saunders/Williams. Saunders is basically a guy that gibbs thought was the best coach out there that came the closest to a clone of himself from an offensive strategic standpoint, but he appears to lack something (what it is I don't know for sure). Gregg Williams has been good as a defensive coordinator/head coach for defense (or whatever his official title is), but hasn't proven to be a great head coach when he was given his chance.

But if the choice had to made now, it would have to be Gregg Williams mainly because he has been with the redskins for 2 years now and the advantages that come with that fact.

GW had limited personnel and staffing budgets in buffalo... those don't exist here. he has a great defense, but no one to help him get the offense working. He does have the leadership and he's a good judge of player talent.

Watch a saunders interview and you'll see what he lacks. he's totally uninspiring and you'll be put to sleep REAL fast. he speaks really softly and almost mumbles at times, and he has a hard time relating to people cause he's an X's and O's geek and just likes playing with scheme and numbers more than dealing with people. He's truly a great coordinator though, but i just can't see him being a great head coach.

i would like to remove Joe's brain and teenage mutant ninja turtle him. Like the villain Crane, just a brain in a big dumb body that listens to his commands. It would freak me out with Joe's laugh. But i think their laughs are already very similar. We could use Ray Brown's body. That would be the best.

Or in the Simpsons when Mr Burn's is just a brain in a weird little robot thing with a glass top. All we need is the Joe's brain to communicate with free agents wives.

Re: heir to the throne

It would be a combination of both Al Saunders and Greg Williams. I swear that with Gibbs making the Head Coach Offense and Head Coach Defense, that he is trying to create it so that when he DOES retire, that the succesors to the Head Coaching job will be two people, Saunders and Williams.

firstdown 03-16-2006 02:57 PM

Re: heir to the throne

Spurier all the way he just needs another chance and with Williams and Saunders under him it would be lights out football. For all the people who hate Brunell he would be out by the second quarter of the first game. Then Campbell would be to winded to play after running 300 yards around in circles to avoid the rush. Then in the second half Ramsey could come in and just stand there like a statue and get creamed the rest of the year. After the year is over Ramsey will just quit Brunell will retire and Campbell will be our man and not the wasted draft pick some say he was and all will be happy.
