Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
Gibbs said the team is not in the market for a kicker or punter, with veteran kicker John Hall recovered from another injury-plagued season and young punter Derrick Frost showing enough promise to remain in Washington. Gibbs said Frost may handle kickoff duties to relieve the strain on Hall's leg. (Look at the bottom of this article Redskins Notebook )
What do people think of these "non-moves?" |
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
i would have loved 2 get, vanderjagt, or adam vinateri.. but j hall aint bad.
|
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
ghey. Halls injuries are now recurring, its not a 1-off thing, he missed HUGE amounts of time two years running. Frost is terrible... out of 32 punters, he's in the low 20s.
I guess they think hall is healthy for good this time and frost will get better, but you can get undrafted guys that punt better than him. |
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
yeah i think the team, needs 2 do something about frost. his punting this past year was not impresive at all!!!
|
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
As agressive as the Skins have been in free agency, I was disappointed that we didn't go after Ryan Longwell. With all the close games in the NFL, the PK has become more valuable.
I've read that there aren't any standouts in the draft this year. So, I guess we hope that Hall comes back stronger. And Frost was barely adequate last season. Are there no outstanding punters in the draft either? |
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
i think having frost kick off would be key.. it would spare hall from the temptation of making tackles and getting hurt and take some strain off his leg.
if healthy, and that is the key, hall is a fine kicker. maybe they feel frost has passed the point of jitters and shanks.. i am not so sure, but have to defer to the FO on this one. for certain, i do not want another rookie punter |

Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
No need to look at K and P when they weren't responsible for playoff shortcomings!
|
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
hopefully we bring in some undrafted kickers and punters in during training camp to compete with j. hall and frost for the starting job. frost consistently kicked 30 yarders in key moments in the game, and i'm definitely not sure that his kickoffs will even reach the 20 yard line.
No need to look at K and P when they weren't responsible for playoff shortcomings!
Not only that we had a washed up center and a 40 something guard as our back up on the OL!!! Brown did a fair job but when he went down in the Seattle game we were in big trouble. Raymer was so bad and even more funny was watching him get his ass kicked and looked completly lost working in Browns place at Right guard! I don't think we can be as lucky another season with out two good back ups! |
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
tyler jones is hall's competition, he was with chicago, but got cut in preseason. now he's in NFLE as a skin. He's a nobody.
|
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
IF(big IF) hall is healthy, he can be a pretty damn good kicker. Why we are cursed with kickers getting injured I have no idea, but if hes healthy we will be ok in that department. the only think I worry about is that Frost idiot. He is absolutely awful. The only reason he is in the low 20's instead of the 30's in terms of punting stats is because our offense would stall around midfield and he didn't have to kick it by 30 yards. You look when he punts from our 20 or 30, teams are getting bacll around midfield. that is pretty damn bad.
|
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
Frost did show some improvement late in the season, perhaps enough to show some promise for this staff??
I think we'll wait to see what hits the wire as we get closer to the season. |
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
did Tupa retire?
|
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
theyre actually thinking that frost can kick further than hall.
|
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
I actually don't know what to make of this situation. I like John Hall but it seems to me if you're going to have him around you need a contingency plan in case he gets hurt. Maybe the team has something in mind for that, it's hard to know.
I'm not sure why we don't add Tom Rouen at P though. Frost did improve throughout the course of the year last year, and he's got big-leg potential. But it seems like we could afford to add a better punter. Whatever though, I have no idea how to tell if Frost is going to be any good. Just have to wait and see. |
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
Frost litterally cost us a game in Tampa, and almost did the same a few more times. I dont care if he is our punter and Hall is our kicker, but people should at least be brought in to compete for the job.
|
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
I think its a mistake not to at least look into replacements. Im not talking a big money signing like Vinateri or anything, but lets bring back Nick Novack and a young punter or two. Neither Hall nor Frost was good enough last season to have the job handed to them -- a little competition never hurt!
|
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
Nick Novack had some big pressure kick last season. Who was better Hall or Novack? As for Frost someone tell me with facts why he was so bad? I know Halls kick-offs were very short and not much hang time right? Any facts here as well? Like in dragnet "'Just the facts Sr."

Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
What happened to Tupa? Last year he just all of a sudden went on injured reserve and then this year we cut him real quick. Did he have much cap savings and did he retire? Halls only problem is injuries not his abilities. I was reading back several months ago that he work out all the time and they where going to look at how he was working out. The thought was is he may have been doing more harm than good to his leg by how he was working out. Maybe they found something he was doing and changed his work outs and now feel comfortable with him

Gibbs said something about Halls workouts and that he has been working out maybe to much or something to that effected. That he[Hall] would need to work with team trainers this off season. Question here is can hs kick-offs get better....very bad last year. |
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
hall was good until he got injured, and re-injured.
tupa had back spasms last offseason and because he's over 40, they don't want to risk it happening again. frost sucks cause he's inconsistant. sometimes its high and short, sometimes its sorta downfield with not that great air time, sometimes (too often) he muffs it and it flies out sideways. he's just not very good. whoever wants novak to come back should stop right there. he sucks. he has low range and he kicks low. he had 3 blocked kicks in under a year when most kickers have 1 or none in a year. he's strictly a backup kicker. |

frost will probably be doing the kickoffs until everyone is 150% sure that hall can do it without nuking his leg again. there are 3 decent punters this year (imo) 2 will be 6th-7th round picks and 1 will be undrafted. we should get one as competition in the very least. or grab dirk johnson from the eagles... cause that'd give us a punter and screw the eagles a tiny bit as well. |
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
This is a big big big big mistake. Frost is bad and Hall is always hurt. They must be planning something? Please!
|
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
We have to do something about our kicking game. INHO it is one of the weakest areas we have. We at least need someone who can put in a FG of a little more than 40 yards

I agree 1000% with this. Novak is a pretty accurate kicker. He gets decent leg behind his kicks too, but that's only because he's launching it so low. The blocks are killer, they're susceptible to being run back for TDs. He's not an option in my book. |

well joel, the good thing is we'll have hall working out rather than rehabbing this offseason. he should have his leg strength up to par. i also heard that last year danny smith was asking them to kick high and short to get the cover men down there. |
No need to look at K and P when they weren't responsible for playoff shortcomings!
John Hall's missed FG in the Seattle game certainly didn't help. Just something to consider. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/recap?gid=20060114026 That cut the Seattle lead to a touchdown just 3:01 into the final quarter. Then Josh Scobee fumbled the kickoff and kicker John Hall recovered, but Hall missed a 36-yard field-goal attempt that could have cut it to four. |
Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
I'm hoping we draft a kicker or punter in the low rounds and replace Hall or Frost. It's hard to have confidence in either guy right now.

How can you say that? No one knows what the future holds for these youngsters. You might say, "The Redskins would be better off focusing on other needs, etc" but your post strikes me as an overstatement. It also comes off as discourteous and dismissive. |

If you're offended i suggest you tell me who exactly is worth a pickup in the draft and why they'd be any better than the no-name kicker we already have instead of just telling me i shouldn't comment on a subject :P |

I was merely suggesting that the tone was condescending--which is okay too. My suggestion would be to keep Hall and Frost. I believe that length is less important than consistency. Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
If I have to go through another season with Jen Hall and Frost I might just kill myself. I would rather have Adam Viniteri than anyone of the free agents we signed.

Re: Redskins Uninterested in Free Agent Kickers and Punters
vinetari wants 3$mill a year.
