Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
The Post casually mentioned in an article today how the Skins signed a new starting TE, but I assumed Cooley was still our man and that Fauria replaced Royal as first non-H-Back TE.
I know Cooley is the starting H-Back, but on single TE non F/H-Back sets, who gets up on the line? I'm not terribly familiar with Fauria, what are his strengths? is he a pass-catcher like Cooley, better at blocking etc? i'm sure they'll both be on the field together alot, but Cooley's still the starting "Go To" guy right? |
Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
I think he could technically be the "starting TE" depending on the starting formation. If you go 2 WR, 5 OL, 1 TE, 1 HB, 1 TB, 1 QB.....then he's a "starter". Basically, Cooley takes the place of the starting FB that most teams go with.......so that opens up another TE spot.

Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
but on goalline/shortyardage situations when we have Mike "secret weapon" Sellers out there as the real FB, who's up on the line? Chris or Christian?
|
Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
He's a blocking tight end. I think we have plenty of people to throw the ball to now, heh?

Both, I mean one will be tight, Fauria, and the other, Cooley will be out in space trying to creat mis-matches, favorable for us... |
Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
ive always thought of fauria as a balanced tight end. can block and has solid hands. he is our TE, Cooley is our H-back. Fauria simply replaces Royal

oh yeah? a big body blocker? excellent that's what i was hoping to hear, i hope he's good at pass protection, for the frequent times you basically need another lineman. i was under the mild impression (from the few times i can stomach watching the Pats) that he was a pass-catcher. |

Agreed, depends on the formation they call for....and many times both will still be in there (2TE sets). |
Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
apparently fauria is a good locker room guy also, dont know if i heard that from on this site or in an interview.

Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
Fauria is a stud blocker, big upgrade over Royal. His hands, I dunno, the Pats use a lot of trickery in goal line situations so I'm not sure if that is a critique on Fauria's hands or just a case of "those tricky Pats."
I guess the real question of who starts is how often we go with three wides, but now we have options. |
Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
bless Cooley, but he should almost always be up on the line, he's not really fooling anybody in the backfield as a lead blocker for Portis or in pass protection. he's always just been our trusty #2 reciever/safety valve.
gonna be exciting to see the offensive changes with TWO real #2 receivers in the offense now. i'm still hoping to see Sellers bludgeon holes from the backfield more often. |
Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
royal was in on most plays, i expect the same from fauria

Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
Who is Jonathan Goodwin and is he any good? He's an o lineman? We're supposed to have just met with him.... tell me about him someone.
|
Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
we'll be switching to a 3WR set... if only one TE is on the field, it should be cooley. Fauria can catch, but he's really going to just do everything royal did, but better (block block block block catch block).

i remember Royal not being very effective at blocking. he was pretty athletic and wiley though, it's just we already had Cooley. |

Scouts Inc. Profile: Full Name: Jonathan Scott Goodwin Born: December 2, 1978 Columbia, SC Height: 6-3 Weight: 318 lbs. Age: 27 Pos: OG Experience: 4 years College: Michigan Drafted: Year: 2002 Round:5 Pick:19, Jets
Goodwin has very good size and is valuable because of his versatility; he's capable of playing all the positions on the offensive line. He is best suited to play guard or center. He has good long arms, a decent punch coming off the ball and gets good separation from a defender. He takes a good first step and takes good angles to his blocks. He has decent strength, but he is not a dominant blocker at the point of attack. He shows the ability to mirror and slide with a defender and has the agility to be able to pull on traps and to lead the toss play. He gets into position to make a play, but he is inconsistent with his hand placement and is more of a waist bender who gets overextended at times. He has a narrow base on pulls and has a tough time adjusting to the moving target. He shows he can get to the second level, but he is ineffective in sustaining blocks on a moving target. He lacks the strength to get a lot of movement on the line of scrimmage in the run game and gets knocked back by a strong bull rush. He has difficulty resetting his feet once he commits and is vulnerable to a counter move in pass protection. Overall, he plays with good intelligence and can provide backup help in several positions. He needs to become more consistent in his technique and work harder to finish his blocks.
|

thanks, great site feature. hmm, grizzled veteran jack-of-all-trades. hopefully he can block better than Royal did. |

Marv Levy thinks he's the best blocking TE he's seen. Seriously, he said that. |

He said it in an interview right after they signed him. |
Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
Royal was a good, productive player, but a wall he was not.

Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
Rember we have Manuel White. This guy is awsome if you ever watched UCLA. HE is penciled in at Hback but can play the TE position in this offense.

before his convenient trip to IR, he was having a lot of problems with the transition to hback and said something about how he rather just be a RB or something... maybe the year helped. |

He's never been a great blocker, which perplexes me with Gibbs' history. I don't think Cooley will ever be in a traditional TE role, but he will be on the field more than Fauria. Fauria essentially replaces Royal. Not sure whether that's an upgrade or not. |
Re: Cooley/Fauria who's at TE?
BOTTOM LINE:
Fauria will always be at TE and Cooley will be either a flew receiver, a motioning FB or in the wing/H Back position. When they go 3 wides they will most likely put two WR's on the line and use coole one yard off the ball next to the tackle. |

i was under the mild impression (from the few times i can stomach watching the Pats) that he was a pass-catcher.
Big blocking type isn't really his style, although it is his image (more accurately, his style in Madden). I haven't exactly followed him his whole career, but I was hoping for someone who's a better blocker than Fauria to play the tight end. Course, the Coaching Staff knows what they are doing, and if they dont think he can do a great job, they'll go get someone better. So I'm not gonna argue with myself anymore about this. |
