Who do I miss? or who do I think the team misses?
I miss Davis, good, solid back who was a good guy and really wanted to be a Redskin for life. Who the team misses most? IMO - Gardner, Bailey. Yes, I know Gardner has reverted to "head case" form, but he was a beast for us at a position of need. Bailey simply b/c (while somewhat overrated IMO) he was a shut down corner who could be counted on to take on the other team's top receiver and pretty much take them out of the game. |
Larry Centers
|
Im going to have to agree with Centers. We cant miss Bailey to much yet because we hvaent seen how our D performs without him. Im really looked forward to Cooley, i think having a receiving and blocking hback will add great dimension to our team.
|
Im going to have to say, my man, Brian Mitchell. He never wanted to leave, but was forced out. He was a superb special team player and did what was needed when he got to play running back. When he left are punt and kick returns went south.
|
i always liked marco coleman and i think westbrook would have been a pretty good wr if he hadn't been hurt so much.
|
Yeah, #82 was good when he wasn't hurt or beating up his own team mates. '9

I probably miss Davis more than anyone else.
More than anyone else on that list, we should we have never let go of QB Brad Johnson. Between Jeff George, Tony Banks, Danny Woeful, and Shane Matthews, I think letting him go constituted the biggest mistake. I really think we would have been playoff contenders every year since 1999. Who do I think we will miss most this season? Daryl Gardener (of 2002 AND NOT Daryl Gardener of IHOP or 2003). I don't think that Cornelius Griffin and Philip Daniels cure our Dline woes and the dline was out biggest weakness. What gives? I didn't buy that LB compensating for the DLine stuff last year and I don't believe it this year. As Steve Spurrier said, whoever dominates the line of scrimmage controls the game. As wrong as he was on a number of issues, he couldn't be more right about controlling the line of scrimmage-game. Gibbs' offense was so successful in large part because we had the Hogs. It looks like he's concentrated on the O-line to build on the Hog tradition. However, we need some D-line Hogs and Gibbs seems to be totally neglecting that. |
Centers, Alexander and Bailey

You took the words right out of my mouth! |
Centers
|
Right now i go with Centers and Gardener. It would be so nice to have a DT like Gardener right now. Can't really say Bailey rihght now because we have so much depth at CB without him and Portis.
|
Larry Centers and Davis (now that we have Portis, I don't quite miss him as much). Centers was a class act!
|
I miss Spurrier. I wish he could have taken an Offensive coordinator type job. Learned a lot from Gibbs, then given it another go.
|
I think I might have to go with a couple of guys not on that list, Kenard Lang and N.D. Kalu
But from the list presented, I think everyone is right on about 2002 Gardener |
But from the list presented, I think everyone is right on about 2002 Gardener
The 2002 Gardener doesn't exist anymore. He was the right combination of angry, hungry, and desperate. I don't think the planets will align for him again. |
You're right Brudlee, 2002 Gardener isn't coming back, he was old, had questionable judgement and character, and wanted a bundle of dough.
Buty, I don't people are as much upset about Gardener not returning as they are concerned about a lack of real starting quality players on the dline (as the 2002 Gardener was). I love teams that blitz and go after the QB. We don't appear to have the personnel to bring decent heat. |
Agreed Ramseyfan. I think that will change under Gregg Williams. Not only has he made great players out of good ones, but he has been able to draw free agent tealent to his defenses in the past. With agressive and creative blitzing, we'll get the heat we need this year.

Great now you're going to tell me Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny don't exist either. While we're at it I'd like the 1991 offense and the 1983 defense back as well. Well at the very least I'd like this year's team to match those years' stats |
Alexander and Centers. I agree with you smootsmack It would sure be nice to have Kalu back.
|
I miss the following players from that list: Brian Mitchell, Larry Centers, Daryl Gardener (whom I agree with everybody about), Big Daddy, Champ, Marco Coleman, but most of all, Stephen Davis. He ran hard, pumped out solid yardage year after year despite the records and constant changes that plagued the 'Skins throughout his tenure. He never had great speed or power, but he had the valuable intangibles of situational awareness, great vision, strong character, and a good work ethic, which are the things that made Emmitt Smith so great.
Maybe the best release that we did, besides the way we got rid of Deion Sanders, was Michael Westbrook. That guy was a cancer in the clubhouse, was always injured, and was just an all around ass. If he had such great "potential", why didn't he do anything in Cincinnati? Westbrook was just a waste of athletic ability. |
Shaolin - In Westbrook's defense... Before last year who ever did anything in Cincinnati =p
|
how could anyone choose anyone over a true redskin in and out. brian mitchell ... i almost hate snyder for that move
|
Brian Mitchell is the whore of the NFC East. Once each team uses him up, they pass him on. Give me Morton any day. Mitchell was just about out of his prime when we traded him.
|
Mitchell was as true of a Redskin as anyone. Its a shame what happened to him. Yea id take Morton now, but Morton now or Mitchell ten years ago... Id have to take Mitchell.
Chad is one of the nicest people ive ever met though. |
Stephen Davis is one of the elite backs in the league and I think he is the one I miss most, but I would put Brian Mitchell a close second, he got a raw deal. :vomit-smi
|
I'm with Summo. I almost choose Mitchell as the one I miss most earlier. Mitchell was not a "whore of hte NFL East" by choice. He wanted to be a Redskin for life - he had quality years after he left us - certainly better than whomever it was that originally replaced him (I admit, I have forgotten who that was). Plus, his intangibles are great and would have been even more magnified if he had stayed with the Skins.
Also, as for best cut/who I miss the least - Westbrook. Talked a great game, looked like the archetype for the WR position, but was an all around ass for whom all problems were really someone else's fault. And, while Cincinatti has been the black hole of careers for sometime, Westbrook was literally run out of town (he got the Keyshawn treatment before Keyshawn did). He was a bigger waste of a pick than Shuler or Howard. At least they simply flopped and moved on. |
Here's a question for you guys. Special teamers aren't generally thought of as first-ballot Hall-of-Famers. However, considering Mitchell holds all sorts of records plus only Jerry Rice and Walter Payton have more total yards than B-Mitch, would you make him a first ballot lock?
Also, could someone refresh my memory here. In Mitchell's last game with the Redskins he returned a kickoff for a touchdown in a playoff game against Tampa right? We should all be able to do that when we're past our prime |
Considering how Art Monk has been screwed over the past few years, I can see BMitch not being a first ballot lock.
|
What no Deion? lol Come on adimit it you were happy to see we got him just like me.
What 4 months ago I would say Steven Davis, but not now that we have Portis. I would say Brian Mitchell. |

I said ALMSOT over. Gotta trade them while they still have some value. |
Except we didn't trade him. He was either cut or just not resigned. Don't remember which.
|
I said ALMSOT over. Gotta trade them while they still have some value.
Sorry I hope you didn't think I was questioning your post. While I'm pretty sure that we didn't trade him, he just wasn't offered a new contract, I had actually thought that his best days were behind him as well when he returned that kickoff and it was just a fluke. As much as I liked the guy I didn't think it would be truly detrimental to the team if we lost him. Besides, didn't we add Michael Bates the next year? At the time, he was one of the best young returners in the game |
The Deion signing might have been my worst moment as a Redskins fan, right up there with Marcus Allen breaking the team's back in the '84 Super Bowl. And I wish the Skins could have been more loyal to Brian Mitchell ... letting him go was almost (but not quite) comparable to letting someone like Darrell Green go, or Art Monk, though Art was clearly at the end of his career unlike Brian Mitchell. I think our special teams would have been better all these years if we'd kept him.
But my choice is Kenny Watson. |
