Just another in the growing line of #1 picks gone bust. Mario Williams WILL be next.

it's wayyyy too early to tell if mario williams is gonna pan out. Either way, this is of no significance to us. I think he could still be a good backup somewhere.

Ding-ding

That didn't take long.

That's why we're paying you the big bucks as the new mod. ;)

I'll be the first to answer.

If he wants to return for the veteran minimum, we could use the third DT. Not sure he'd make the roster tho.

how is a solid 12 year starter a bust?

he'd definately make our roster as the #3/#4 if nothing else, but i'm not sure he'd take vet min... and if he won't, its not worth it on a stop gap.

I agree vet min and thats it, it would be nice to have him just to give the starters a breather late in the game but like GTripp said he has to make the team first...

he took our money once, might be the last shot for him.i dont see anyone giving him big money.i have to agree, even though he has hung around for 12 seasons,i think expectations were alot higher for him

Re: big daddy is cut

There will be money out there for Wilkinson. He played well here (though not well enough to justify his salary), and he played well in Detroit. He had 79 tackles last year, which would (statistically) rank him above Salave'a and Griffin.

I don't expect to see him in burgundy, but he'll play next year if he wants to. Let's not throw him on the trash heap of history.

MTK 05-23-2006 08:10 AM

Re: big daddy is cut

I think it's fair to call him a bust from the perspective that he never lived up to the enormous hype surrounding him when he was the #1 overall pick.

That being said, he has been an above average DT and has had a pretty decent career with some flashes of brilliance here and there.

I dont think Wilkinson is a total bust. He has been a pretty decent DT in terms of taking up space, allowing teammates to make plays. I think his stats said he had about 80 tackles last year. Thats pretty impressive for DT. A total bust, no.. just maybe didn't follow the hype of a #1 draft pick. But really, not a lot of those kids do coming out of college.

Re: big daddy is cut

I usually bash who ever asks the question : why not this guy. but this time I am actually in agreement if he comes relatively cheap. Joe has had some foot issues and missed some time, and Big Daddy could fill in nicely. I am down with trying to bring big daddy back.

Re: big daddy is cut

I'm not sure we even have a big need for another DT at this point. We've got a lot of versatile guys who can play multiple spots along the line.

In addition to a lot of promising rookies.

exactly, I'd rather see us develop some young guys rather than bumping one of them for Big Fatty

Was it him or Stubblefield who used to wear a helmet so tight that it looked like his eyes were gonna pop out of his head?

The stats are a combination of onfield tackles (20) and hot dog cart vendor tackles (60) for a grand total of 80 tackles last season.

Misread the article. LB had 80 tackles. not big daddy.
I know That Guy disagrees with me, but I have this feeling Montgomery will be something special.
I also really like Montgomery. However, if he or Killings ends up being the 3 DT this year, that could be an issue. One or two down the road, he will probably be in the starting lineup...maybe....we can always hope.

Re: big daddy is cut

5th rounders turning into starters is strictly a bonus - it should never be expected. The most likely low rounders to be successful are the ones that fell at the last minute (havner, matua, wright (if his off field problems get fixed), etc). his chances are lower than that group, but it happens every year... it's just a matter of talent, luck, and circumstance.

On the radio this morning, it was reported that the Lions wanted Wilkinson back, and he wasn't sure if he wanted to play. So, I hereby rescind my prediction that he'll get paid this year.
