Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
OK...you know its the boring offseason when a thread like this is started, but what the hell. Last night I came home with my 12 pack of beer and was pleasantly surprised to see that the Skins dominated the NFL network for something like 3 hours! First off was the awesome 1987 season, followed by a show devoted to the Denver win in the SB (22?), followed by the game of the week of the TB/Skins playoff game. The ref for that game was miked up, he was the one that threw ST out for spitting. Ive got to say, he was perhaps the best ref Ive ever seen. He constantly conferenced with the other guys and gave good explanations to the coaches for his calls. Id love to have this guy for every game. Ok, this is sad, again apologies for the thread, but Im dyin for football.

Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
That was Mike Carey, right? I've always thought he was pretty good.
|
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
Yeah, I think it was Mike Carey.
|
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
Yeah he was damn good in that game. He's one of the best in the biz.
I thought he handled the spitting incident very well. |

Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
For those of you that missed that episode last night on the NFL network, I think it repeats today at noon Central time and then sometime on Saturday July 1st. I am planning to DVR it. I caught part of it last night. I agree with you guys that have posted here. Mike Carey is a great referee and the most precise in terms of hand motions calling fouls I have ever seen.

Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
Carey is great, no doubt. You can just tell how much he cares about his job and how seriously he takes it. Total professional.

Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
I still dont think ST should have been ejected.....
|
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
i always thought he did a good job in this game, but he did miss one call that i know of....but it went in our favor for once so i dont care. arrington definitely fumbled after he intercepted it but the bucs recovered, but he was ruled down by contact

I thought it was a good call to help keep the game under control. Had he not booted him, there's no doubt Pittman would have been looking for him and things would have only escalated. Things were already getting heated before the spitting incident. |

allthough, one tends to think that pittman wouldn't have hit taylor being that he is not a woman! |
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
I still insist that spitting is no big deal. But I'll admit I've been beaten repeatedly by you guys while trying to make that argument. Plus the Skins ended up winning so it was all good.
In the end I like Mike Carey a lot. Good ref. Beats Phil Luckett any day. |
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
I thought NFL Films went out of their way to glorify the job that Mike Carey did. However, it was at least deserved because the game was so well officiated. I was going to make a thread about this, but it looks like someone beat me to the punch.

Hocculi (sp?) looks like he could PLAY football! Dude must work out 8 hours a day or something. I am use to seeing scrawny refs out there but he is a big guy. |
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
I do think that Taylor should have been ejected for spitting, however, I think that Pittman needed to go too. I always thought the rules said that if you are caught throwing a punch you get ejected regardless of why you did it, and Carey obviously saw Pittman take a swing.
On a sidenote, did anyone else happen to see the Ravens in Detriot last year? Carey ejected 2 different Ravens and I really thought he was going to start swinging on Suggs, which probably would have been one of the worse ideas ever. That game was a classic because of how bad the ravens collapsed. |

Hocculi Fact #1: Ed Hocculi was never allowed to actually play football because it is rumored that a Hocculi stiff-arm is considered a lethal weapon. |

Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
I remember watching it the first time a few months ago and I love how we dominated at the line. THe d-line was amazing and it shows how much their tipped passes did in that game. I love how balls were being aired out due to them simms being scared they would be tipped. I also loved the hit portis put on quarls.

That game was a train wreck to watch. I remember feeling sorry for the Ravens at first, because it seemed like the officiating crew was daring them to even breathe hard. Then they show dumbass Brian Billick perpetuating the same sloppy, disrespectful behavior that his team was displaying, and I was like "Screw it, toss the whole team". I'm still shocked that an NFL franchise acted the way the Ravens did that day. |
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
Carey is good. He should have ejected ST as he did but he should have also ejected Pittman. The are rules for a reason and breaking one in front of the ref for any reason should result in the normal punishment. The rule doesn't say "Upon throwing a punch a player shall be ejected except if done in response to something really really bad." It says you get ejected. If there were caveats to rules to allow for emotional responses then why the hell are there rules at all? I think he did a very good job and was right with ejecting ST but he blatantly disregarded the rules by not ejecting Pittman. He doesn't get to decide whether punching someone is ejectable or not and in which situations it is. Maybe someday he will get that power but he doesn't have it now.

Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
I'll agree with you about that ref. I was ready to shout a bit because I thought of Mike Alstott's extra-long but invisible elbow when I saw the thread title.

Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
f... that ref.
|
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
talk about phrases that are overused...the spit did not hit!
|
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
if the spit didn't hit you must aquit
|
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
Before the spitting, it was just some normal, playoff juiced bumping and shoving. ST took it to a whole nother level and Carey did the right thing in throwing him out.
I can remember when that happened and I was rather new to the Warpath board and there were too many sticking up for Sean and saying spitting was just part of the game. Maybe in the pile ups and away from an officals eye, but that does not make it ok and certainly you don't do it with a ref a foot from your face. Classless then, classless now. Good call and Carey is a great ref in a league that does not have many. |
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
i love taylor but in a playoff game why would he even think about spitting on someone? in my old neighborhood there is nothing you can do to someone that is lower, shows a total lack of respect for someone, then spitting on someone. you might as well be saying, come on lets fight. mike carey called a brilliant game by letting the players dictate to him what calls will be made.

Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
pittman took action back and the rules say he is to be penalized. I don't think a little push is enough to kick someone out of a game but 15 yards should have been added. I don't agree with it but it is not the ref's decision to make as much as it is his decision to throw taylor out. Taylor spits that means he is out, pittman reacts and he gets a personal foul. BOth penalties should have cancelled and taylor should have been ejected.

Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
You know, to me, the second Giants game was more thrilling than the second Eagle game. I would rather see the NFL Network to a Game of the Week on that contest. Granted, the Philly game was what wrapped up a playoff berth, but the Giant game seemed more back-and-forth, had more of a battle of the Titans type of aura to it.
But that's just me. |
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
even though he booted sean taylor, seeing that game of the week footage shows the mike carey is one of the very best in the league. Only Ed may be better
|
Re: Ref in the TB playoff game was awesome
I dont think Carey has done a Super Bowl yet, so after that performance I bet we will see him in SB XLI.
