Latest Vikings News: (NFL.com) The Vikings gave up 418 yards passing and 32 first downs, were outgained 521-289, saw the Cowboys drive into their territory on all but the first of their 10 possessions, gave up 155 yards in overtime ... and still escaped Texas Stadium with a 10-10 tie in their preseason finale against the Dallas Cowboys. The defense struggled, but came up with three interceptions and got bailed out twice in overtime when Mike Vanderjagt missed short field goals. Brad Johnson played for the entire first half and completed 11 of 13 passes for 135 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown toss to Marcus Robinson early in the second quarter. "I think we had a good preseason," Johnson said. "I think we are prepared. ... I'm looking forward to the season." J.T. O'Sullivan (4-for-11, 53 yards) struggled, and the Vikings couldn't get much of a running game going (86 yards). Minnesota's star of the game was punter Chris Kluwe, who had a 47.4-yard average and kept pinning Dallas back into their own territory. Minnesota will open the regular season Sept. 11 at Washington on Monday Night Football.

I think I will be as nervous as Joe Gibbs before the game starts tonight. Please NFL Powers, don't ever schedule us another Monday night season opener!!! I can't take the anticipation. Is it not amazing to everyone that the 1st Week 1 game was played last Thursday (which seems like forever ago now) and the last game is not over until Tuesday morning, (by the time the Chargers and Raiders get finished) over 4 days and almost 100 hours later!

Ya, if you look at the gameday program neither Portis or Springs are listed on the probable starters. I do think CP will see limited action but we definately know that Springs is not going to play.

CC, I hear what you're saying. This isn't playoff critical, but we need to answer some questions tonight and get jump on the division. So in that regard, I totally agree with you.

Re: 9/11/2006: Redskins (0-0) vs. Vikings (0-0)

Anybody nervous? I always get nervous before games even though their outcomes have absolutely no impact on my life whatsoever -- aside from making me pissed off when they lose, of course.

I read recently where Joe Gibbs vomits before every game.

Does anyone else practice their dinosaur calls into the big white telephone before a Redskins game?

12thMan 09-11-2006 04:05 PM

Re: 9/11/2006: Redskins (0-0) vs. Vikings (0-0)

I'm nervous as all get out. I just want our guys to come out with some intensity.

This is a game they should win, but can easily lose if they underestimate Minnesota. And if they lose, the critism of Saunder's offense and our off season aquisitions are almost certain to ensue.

Oh good lord, you're right about that. If the Skins lose tonight everyone in football America will have us right next to the Packers for the 2nd pick in the draft next spring.

You can bank on that.

I actually expect somewhat of a struggle tonight. I still think the Redskins will win, but it'll probably be ugly. Both of the opening games in the new Gibbs era have been that way, and with a new offense I don't think this one will be any different. And yeah, I'll be one of the ones bitching and offering my comments as to why.

By the way, did anyone hear Eric Allen on the Colin Cowherd show on ESPN Radio today? Allen doesn't think the Redskins will be as good "with the same offense that they ran last year."

Too funny. You'd think with as much spare time as Eric Allen has blabbing about something he's paid to know about, he would keep up with current events and realize that it is, in fact, a different offense for the Redskins this year.

It amazes me how little most of these guys really know. Which goes to show that the local media and forums, such as ours, are much more informed. And I'll be the one to start the thread at 0'dark thirty about the our offense if the Skins don't put a good can of whoop ass on the Vikes.:)
the first new thread after the game( if the skins lose) will be " brunell is finished, time for j campbell"
When listening to the comments of the "experts", inevitably, it will be Mark Brunell as their chief reason for why they believe the Redskins will fail this season. Nevermind that he had the best touchdown-to-interception ratio of his career, most of the naysayers believe he was running on fumes last year. The fact that the starting offense didn't score a point or even reach the redzone in preseason didn't help to convince anybody otherwise.

If Brunell gets nicked up, and Gibbs shows the type of blind loyalty that he did in the '04 season, only under that scenario would I say they could be right. When healthy, he's more than adequate. But the slightest injury at this stage of Brunell's career seems to render him completely useless. Witness the knee injury in the second Giant game last year as evidence.

Yes, there very well could be "Start Jason Campbell" threads if the Redskins falter tonight -- the problem is, there could be legitimate reasons to start those threads.

Re: 9/11/2006: Redskins (0-0) vs. Vikings (0-0)

Am I the only one who's confused with the whole "Start Betts, Portis is the backup" thing? I mean I've watched a substantial amount of football in my time and I don't ever recall any team doing something like this.

For that matter I don't ever recall a team saying if their starting QB went down in a game, one guy would finish off, but if the QB was out for a while, a different guy would take over.

I'm not saying Gibbs & Co. are wrong or crazy, I'm just saying it's all pretty new to me.

That or I don't pay attention very well.

I just wanted to a get a headstart on this, just in case - shouldn't we star JC? I mean Brunell is all old and washed up.

I think what Eric Allen was saying, or trying to say, was that he didn't think Mark Brunell could be successful in this offense two years in a row. He doesn't think Brunell is the answer. He phrased it very poorly and he's wrong of course.
