Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
Hey Guys:
What do you see as the reason(s) that Ricky Williams is having less than a spectacular stint in the CFL? I am not here to piss anyone off this time; I am truly interested in your opinions. Here are his stats after 4 games: 53 carries 214 yards 4.0 Ave. 1 touchdown |
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
Well if I am not mistaken, he is on a pass happy team and his team also has another pretty good back, I think.

Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
4 yrd average isnt so bad. he needs to get more touches for his #'s to improve. just look at last years stats for miami, he didnt start having decent stats until late in the season.

The other pretty good running back is John Avery. He was a high NFL draft pick who has sat every game since William's arrival. |
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
How many yards do they need to get a first down? Is 4yrds really that great up there?

Hm, I remember seeing a post from a super cool awesome guy, suggesting that a bit earlier...lol. Even the fact that he has one touchdown shouldn't be too alarming because he has only ran for 214 yards. Portis had a dry spell like that last year, when he didn't get in the end zone for a while. |

Like the NFL you need 10 yards for a first down but have only 3 downs to get it. Right now, Williams is sitting at 5th overall in rushing yards. |
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
He's probably off the juice.

The doobie juice? |
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
Let's also remember he's not running behind an NFL quality line.

That's why he is still 5th in rushing with such low numbers. I guess they are not that low in CFL standards. It is also early in the season, I am assuming his yards/game will go up. |

While that is true he is also not running against an NFL quality defense. That to me makes up for the non-NFL quality o-line. Seems to me that with all things being equal, he should be absolutely dominant. |

only 3 downs, and less running % overall in comparision to the NFL. It's just a different game, not to mention ricky might have been out of shape, unclear on the scheme, etc. He's not the pounder he was before his first suspension. |
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
What will happen to William's stock in the NFL should he not improve? What kind of line did he run behind in Miami?
|

If somebody does give him a shot it will surely be an incentive laden contract. maybe oakland will give him a shot, they seem to like those hard headed players.

Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
What kind of numbers do you suppose he would have to post in the CFL before he even gets another look in the NFL? For argument's sake, let's assume that the guy is in shape ( I heard that he dropped below 200 LBS to play against the smaller but faster CFL linebackers) and he is playing his hardest but runs below 1000 yards, or doesn't win the CFL rushing title, what does that say about him? How can a player go downhill that quickly? Or, do you think he came into the CFL thinking he was going to blow everyone away?

Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
i think no matter how he plays in the cfl some body will give him a camp invite. he will have to earn anything he gets this time.
|
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
i also think the only reason he is even playing up there is to stay in some kind of football shape
|
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
he was fine in miami last year, i think they still own him. He's still a decent NFL runner, and i don't think his CFL stats are really something to be concerned about.
|
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
He has the second most carries in the league, and the 5th most yards...he has one of the lowest ypc in the league...only 2 people are lower and they have only 28 and 9 carries
but i dont think his team is that good and i know their starting qb is hurt |
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
I'm guessing it's more of a passing geared league.

i am pretty sure that the dolphins own ricky also, and if i remember right i think that Saban still wants ricky on the team next year. For some reason Saban likes ricky and was upset about him being suspended, not upset at him. Also i dont think ricky ever complained about his salary either, he was getting close to league vet min last year and he was fine with that. remember he had to come back or repay the dolphins something like $8 million. so, you can pretty much add that to his pay in a way too.. |
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
saban likes ricky, cause ricky can still run. and as a #2 RB, you're not going to find much better. saban only looksk at talent and whether he can get that talent to show up on game day (which he's done fairly well thusfar).

Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
a pass happy league and only 3 downs to make a first doesnt equal a consistant running game
|

yupp that is why he is still in the top 5 in yards. |
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
I wouldn't be surprised if the Dolphins set some sort of maximum carry clause on Toronto.

Really? For the extra publicity I'm sure they would. I'm sure having an NFL player on their roster has helped sell some tickets. |

Yep, if he doesn't continue to get a paycheck from an NFL team, his debt to the Dolphins will force him to move in with MC Hammer and Mike Tyson. |

I don't know about MC Hammer, but Tyson could probably play in the CFL and they wouldn't even have to pay for a helmet. |
Re: Why is Ricky Williams "sucking" in the CFL?
What about the rest of you guys? Anyone else want to share their perspective about Williams? If not, thanks for those of you who have.
