George to be cut.
It seems that Eddie George is going to be cut by the Titans. I wonder if the Tuna has been waiting for this the whole time. Maybe he traded down for a good pick next year and took a RB in Jones that could be taught by a vet like George. I know he is getting old but behind a good line he could still do serious damage. I just keep picturing the Titans Ravens game last year in my head and pray he doesn't get in our conference!!!
|
I've been wondering the same thing. He could be a good mentor in Dallas.
|
He would be a good pickup for Dallas but I think Parcells is committed to Jones (let's just hope he's not the next Curtis Martin). With the lack of moves from Dallas this offseason, I'd be surprised if they go after George.
|
Thats scary. Lets hope some other team will pick him up first.
|
I'm really not worried about the "RB as mentor" issue. If that were the case, Trung Canidate would have learned a lot more fro Marshall Faulk, and we'd have had a running game last year.
If Dallas signs George, it'll be to play - and I don't know how effectively he can do that anymore. |
I don't know how effectively he can do that anymore.
I agree George IMO is not that good |
Assuming the price is reasonable, why not sign him here to get short yardage? Even at diminished skill levels, if Eddie George only has to carry the ball 8-10 times a game, he is better than any running back on the Skins' roster except Portis. And he can block too...
Please don't try to tell me that Rock Cartwright is better. He's not! |

Please don't try to tell me that Rock Cartwright is better. He's not!
Hey SportsCurmudgeon! Someone is spoofing your name! They make it sound like you want to sign Eddie George! ;) The assumption that his price will be reasonable is the problem here. What is reasonable for a back on the downslope of his career who averaged 3.3 YPC last year? Certainly you don't want to pay a lot of signing bonus, because George probably doesn't have too many years left in the tank. And I agree - Rock Cartwright isn't fit to carry Eddie George's ... groceries. But he can probably get 3.4 yards per carry next year, and at a much better salary. |
Do you all think that he will go to the eagles
|
The Eagles are set at RB. Staley was a waste of money for them, which is why they got rid of him.
Buckhalter and Westbrook give them all the running they need. I like Eddie George, but he's damn near done, IMO. |
George a redskin?!?1 what would he play, special teams. We've already had posts about what running backs are going ot get cut, we definitly dont need more.
And for argument sake, im going ot go ahead and say that Cartright is a better running back at the moment. Rock probably had a higher yards per carry and was a force for us on short yardage lsat year. |
I bet he's in a black and silver uni after Gannon is released.

Eddie got a few years left to play for some other teams before he puts on the black and silver. Youd think with all those vets on that team that they would have a bunch of young guys learning from the best and then stepping in and having a great team. Sapp and Ted Washington are going to be hard as hell to get by next year. I wish they were our DTs |
Let me clarify my statement above. The Redskins are not now and have not been for the last five years concerned with "building for the future". The idea is to win this year and get in the playoffs and see what happens then.
If you are looking at THIS YEAR - and maybe next year as the farthest into the future that one can imagine - Eddie George can do as much for this team if not more than ANY running back on the roster at the moment except Clinton Portis. He cannot carry the ball 25 times a game anymore for more than a week or so. But the only way that anyone on this team carries the ball 25 times or more for more than one week other than Portis means that Portis is hurt. And if Portis is hurt, you are smoking some high quality stuff if you believe that Cartwright or Betts or Canidate or Simon is going to step in and average 150 yards from scrimmage per game. George would merely be the short yardage back and the guy who comes in for three or four plays to give Portis a blow. The issue is COST. If George costs three times what Cartwright and Betts cost, then you hang up the phone with his agent and move on to the next item. But if you can have him for what those guys cost, you would be NUTS to keep them and let him go elsewhere. Remember, this is about winning now and not in 2009. If Joe Gibbs hasn't gotten past 8-8 by 2009, he's going to be heading on out of here... |
Emmit Smith makes over 4 million a year as an old back past his prime. George will get his money from somewhere, his agent will convince someone he is worth it. And you coudlnt sign anyone for less that 3 times Rock and Ladells salary, they are on rookie onctracts and were late round picks, thats as low as your going to get.
|
Curmudgeon, you say the issue is Cost. True, but I would also argue that another issue is pride. I don't think Eddie George is ready to be a short-yardage, specialty back. At least I don't think he feels that way.
|
Eddie George is a class act. He should retire as a Titan.
|
I hope he takes a paycut to stay with them, or just retire. He was a class act and after so many years with that team why would he want to go somewhere else for a year or two.
|
Well, mabye hes looking for that ring still. Mabye he wants to be the short yardage guy to make sure hes not on another team that comes up one yard short...
|
George can still be an effective back in a limited role, I don't think he needs to retire just yet unlike someone like Emmitt who is clearly just hanging on, why I don't know.
|
The question is not cost, because Eddie George is not delusional. He knows he's not going to sign a big money contract this year, but he just is playing the game with the Titans. Last year the Titans asked a LB to restructure his contract, then proceeded to cut him. Eddie is taking a stand, he's not saying he's worth all this money but he is saying that he wants to be dealt with fairly. Whatever.
At the vet minimum, I'd love to see Eddie George in DC. He'd be like George Rogers, and it wouldn't matter if he only averaged 3.4 yds per carry because he'd only be in on 3rd and short anyway. Portis is the workhorse, EG would just be a veteran warrior to plug in while Portis catches a breather. At 6'3" and 240 he's a load and I'd love to see him running the 50 gut for us this fall. |
I hope Sultan McCullah wins out as backup. He was one of the greatest running backs in college history yardage wise. And I thought he looked great last year. Hes cheap and on the roster. Either way we are all praying Portis stays healthy
|
I suspect that the odds are 50/50 that Sultan McGillicudy is one of the top ten running backs in the history of his school.
CAREER: McCullough's 2,800 career yards put him eighth on USC's career rushing list (33rd on the Pac-10 list). He rushed for 100 yards 11 times in his career. He became the first Trojan since Charles White in 1977-79 to lead USC in rushing for 3 consecutive seasons.
So, not sucky, but not a college football history benchmark either. Seriously, though. http://sultanmccullough.com?!? |
in the the top 20 of all time for college backs, forget just looking at his school records. Hes got to be near the top of his school records. Ill find the list I was looking at earlier and show you gusy
|
I think Ron Dayne is somewhere near the top of the list for all-time college rushing yards and he's not exactly striking fear in any opponents at the NFL level
|
alright well heres the list I saw earlier, took me a while to track down. http://espn.go.com/ncf/statistics/2000/ia/rush.html
I say Sultan but didnt remember what it was for. Turns out hes 29th all time for avg yards per game. |
Barry Sanders im pretty sure averaged around 218 per game, not sure why that isnt up there.
Not to take away from LT though, I mean anyone that can rush for 400 yds at any level deserves some credit. Thats even impressive for Madden numbers |
alright well heres the list I saw earlier, took me a while to track down. http://espn.go.com/ncf/statistics/2000/ia/rush.html
I have a ton of respect for the guy, but I'd be surprised if he has more than two productive years left in those legs. |
Where's SultanSmack.com
|
btw- sultan was the RB in the Paul Hackett era... if anyone knows anything about Hackett, his offensive schemes are just that- offensive... the fact that sultan was able to put up numbers speaks volumes about his play.
|
i never thought george was any good. he had a few "good" years but that was about it. he's to tall, slow, avg power, and injury proan. i think your smokin high quality stuff for thinkin betts wouldnt do as good as job as he would this particular season.
|
thanks for the link Canes, but I think that's just for the 2000 season, not all-time
so it seems. I had randomly come accross it this morning, not sure what I was looking at when I found it. That explain why Sandesr wasnt on teh list. |
Do you all think that he will go to the eagles
He might be interested: http://www.nj.com/eagles/times/index.ssf?/base/columns-0/1085818066260170.xml |
I hope he doesnt. Thats the last thing I want is for the Eagles to have more depth. They are going to be hard enough as it is.
|
I hope Gibbs has spent a lot of time watching film and devising a way to beat the teams in our division this year. It will be such a nice change of pace.
