Would you trade Patten for depth?
We are still solid at WR. Id like to keep Espy, and put Cash on the practice squad. There are a few teams with a real need at WR b/c of injury. Should we seek a trade for a backup OL or another corner?
|
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
I think you keep Patten as there will come a time this season where we will need him to step up due to injury.
|
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
No--Give Saunders all the weapons we can.
|
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
No. Patten will be needed at some point this season. It's a virtual guarantee.
|
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
I'm not sure he would bring much in a trade.
With Jacobs at least he had youth on his side. Espy has looked good, but he's not a proven veteran like Patten. We've seen our share of training camp heros... I like Espy but I wouldn't want him over Patten. I think people are jumping the gun with the OL depth. |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
I'm not certain what the cap impact would be of trading him (and I'm too lazy to look it up at the moment). Probably a reason why it is not a likely scenario.
That said, I've always been underwhelmed by DP. We have more youth with more upside at WR than DP. If we could get something of value, then I would like to see us take it. |

Agreed. No doubt it is a concern at this point, and an area everyone should be watching. But we definitely have to give it a chance to see what we have. Trying to judge the backup lineman in one preseason game isn't really fair. Let's see what they do over the next few weeks; my guess is a couple will start to emerge as viable backups. But in the end I wouldn't trade Patten at all (please don't ask me if I'd trade him for a first rounder, because I'm only considering the realistic). He will be very valuable for us at some point this season. |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
Pattens speed will be utlized much more in Saunders offense, the seem routes Saunders likes to run are based on outrunning the defender to the inside which is perfect for Patten. I just don't see us bringing back anything worth while for Patten.
|
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
Patten plays wideout where we are very deep, so I would honor trade offers. But I would only deal him for a draft pick or a player who was guarenteed to make the roster and help the team. No camp fodder deals, like Mike Rumph simply because we are weak there.
I also don't see a good trade coming our way. |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
Sure, but whose got too many corners?
|
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
At this point all my worries are on pause. I believe adding as many DB who are veterans and letting them get G William-nized will show a turnaround in their performance bottom line well be fine on that side of the ball. They have until week 6 unless the "unmentioned catastrophy" happens to the OLine I say we move forward with him. and be confident we are coming to the knife fight with uzi's and nuke bombs on offense.
Odd as it sounds maybe even trade him for a QB. Brunell will surely retire next year, Collins may not have what it takes and he is aged as well though he still looks like a 12 yr old. After that we have Bramlet- who at camp looked too undersized and incapable of NFL demands. This team will need to start over and find competition or relief at that position. |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
No.
|
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
No, but I still think that Espy is the real deal, as for the other training camp "heros" we never saw anything from them during the games, all we ever heard was how good of a practice they had. With Espy you hear teammates talk about him practicing and you seen it in the game against Cincinnati. He wasnt afraid to go across the middle and he cought just about everything that went his way, unlike Farris who was hit in the hands by a beautiful pass from JC...

Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
Ive been to camp, seen the games so far this year. I have to say I have been impressed with Espy but I dont believe he has shown anything against any starting Defense/ secondary. Is that correct? Hey if he wants to emerge and contribute Im all for it but I havent been sold completely yet.

proven winner and consumate professional on a team we all think is ready to make a big time run. cant have enough of those guys around. that and guys from the U

Patten for a backup RB?
" for an OL " for a CB " for a QB Next years draft will be vital to holding this team together. |
Next years draft will be vital to holding this team together.
I think you are right. This is the reason that I was a bit worried when we dealt the second for McIntosh.
In retrospect, we were probably looking at both D'Qwell Jackson and McIntosh, and as soon as one went, pulled the trigger for the other. |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
If you trade Patten you risk playing a "Jimmy Farris" during the season. The lack of WR weapons definitely hurt us down the stretch.
You would be robbing Peter to pay Paul... |

You would be robbing Peter to pay Paul...
Of course, last year we had 2 guys that could start at WR at this level. Now we have 4. So yes, we do have a WR surplus, and could deal Patten. Remember, 2 guys already aren't starting. I like to have that 3rd guy for depth. The 4th guy can never hurt, but he's not going to see the field too often, even with an injury. I still don't believe we could get anything worthwhile for him. |

Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
But we already have deficiencies at many positions. If we can add depth to our O-line i would be happy. Real depth with someone who i feel comfortable starting. The difference b/w jimmy farris and patten isn't nearly as big as the difference between our starting o and our back up o.
I would entertain trades and if we do it then i am fine with putting espy and farris on this team. JImmy is the man. What ever happened to antonio brown, he is also the man. |

Who do you have in mind? Another team certainly isn't going to give us a starter for Patten and assuming that we found somebody worth trading for, they would have to come in here and learn the system. Same situation for a cornerback... |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
I think that we have done what we can already. We have guys that know the system. We have good depth at most positions, but not everywhere. What we really need is a little luck in the injury process and enough wins in the early part of the season to keep us alive for when Saunders offense really starts to take hold. If we can keep our starting line on the field, like we did most of last year, we can make a good run.
As far as corner, I think that we have enough depth with the safeties that we can scheme for most opposing offenses (outside of the playoffs). Lets wait until the next couple of preseason games before we start freaking out. I'm sure the coaches know what they got. They are not new to this game. |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
Ohh yeah... No, I wouldn't trade Patten. Not right now. If we get real close to the regular season and some team has a "Jets QB like" collapse, we may be able to strike a deal that makes sense. Right now, I don't see it happening.
|
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
OK, so im looking over the cap sheets and it will cost us $6 million to cut or trade Patten. That would be spread over this year and next year, but still, it's just not practical.
He's only costing us $1.84 million for this season. |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
To me, in principle you would look at who you could get in a trade and that would determine whether you would trade David Patten.
Patten isn't a core Redskin in my view, so if you aren't in the core, you are tradeable potentially. The question is whether the player or draft choice you get in return is worth it. And with the cap situation, it would have to be a heckuva deal. I think that it is great to have Patten on the team and I doubt any trade offers will come along to make it worth it. He basicially was on the shelf last year and I doubt people will give a lot for him. However, I think he is the real deal and with the new offense you need depth at wide receiver all the more. I also hope Mike Espy makes the team, even if it spells the end of James Thrash's commendable tenure here. Thrash's time has to come to move on at some point and I think Espy is too good to let go. |

Sorry, but it aint happenin. Even though I think Espy makes the team or the practice squad, Thrash has been identified as one of the 6 special teams core guys. He is staying (especially considering salary). |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
I agree it is two soon to judge the depth and also feel Patten will be needed at some point during the season.
Of course the backups are all going to look bad together, but when you have 1 backup in the mix of 4 other starters it won't be as bad. |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
I say sure... for OL help.
We have a senior backup WR in Thrash. If we lose a starting OL, we're screwed. |

This means its actually CHEAPER to keep him than to cut or trade him. I don't think we could get a trade for him, and I know we don't have 1.2 million in space to waste on NOT having David Patten. |
Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?
david patten is a winner...letting him go for anyone else but a winner dosen't make sense i mean sure he isnt a core redsskin but who the f88k is ?...i say we'll need him in 4 wide sets and if there is an injury
