Spurrier led to Gibbs so I'm not complaining. :)

Yep. I think you said it in another post once upon a time too: if you told me in 2000 that I'd get Joe Gibbs back if I could just manage to sit through a Norv firing, a year of Marty, and two years of Spurrier, I'd gladly take that deal.

I'm sure he was probably a speaker, but it's still kinda funny.

Yeah, because Lou Holtz did SO well at South Carolina. Spurrier replaced him and repaired the team.


A chimp could coach Notre Dame to a great season. I'm not taking away from Holtz, but he wouldn't have been much better than Spurrier. Some coaches are just better on the college level. Bobby Ross was another example.

you dont sound very football educated... Holtz did great at SC considering the reign before him. second, how many "chimps" coached ND to a National title since Holtz? Don Davies? Willingham?

I think holtz would have been a much wiser decision over spurrier, but , im glad the way it happened too... to end up getting MR JOE.

Exactly!

We could have had Holtz? Are you kidding me? The guy was a disaster in the NFL, he's a product of his ability to recruit that's it, he needs a premium college job where everyone wants to play to be effective.

Who here can recall Holtz's first stint as an NFL coach? Was he really that bad? It'd be nice to get some first hand perspective on that.

Holtz seems to be an eternally pessimistic, all hope is lost kind of guy; if he was our coach he probably would have put a bullet to his head during his post-game conference this past Saturday night.

Would not have excited about Holtz wanting the Skins coaching job. As far as I'm concerned Holtz want in one hand and crap in the other to see which one fills up faster.

Oh but I AM football educated. :)

A school like ND will attract top players because of their tradition no matter who is the coach.

Every school Holtz left soon went on probation from the NCAA because of rules he violated. It happened to Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame AND South Carolina. (Arkansas didn't go on probation back then but they did suffer from him).

He wasn't as good of a coach as his record indicates considering he cheated so much.



SC was 33-37 under Holtz. Sure they were horrible before he came, but they weren't much better after he left record-wise and when you consider the probation and loss of scholarships from his rule-breaking, it could be argued they were worse off.

buster i have to disagree with you. just how well did bob davies and ty willingham do after holtz? and i remember holtz with the jets as a disaster but.... i also remember bellicheks first coaching job with the browns. so, you just never know

Lou Holtz IMO is head and shoulders better than Spurrier at any level. How much success has ANY Notre Dame coach pre-Weis had in the past 25 years, only Holtz found a way to win under that kind of pressure and with the higher admission standards at Notre Dame. Holtz rebuilt programs and restored them to prominance, he was a truely great motivator and a winner wherever he went other than a short lived stint in the NFL many years ago. Still do we ever bring back Gibbs if Holtz came aboard and did his usual stellar job of resesitating the many teams he coached here in Washington...hard to say...and I'd rather have Gibbs than any coach, living or dead.

Well, situation depends a lot for both players and coaches. Bellichek failed horribly in Cleveland and now he's some genius who does everything right.

i may hurl!please do'nt mention steve spurrier again.he was/is a joke at the nfl level!anyhow,we got the best coach ever back,and even if they do'nt win another superbowl,it was well worth it because he gives us a better chance to win every week!
