Houston, you have a problem.
ESPN.com - NFL - Houston has a problem? Portis likely to face Texans
Sorry if someone posted this already, but I didn't realize CP completed a full practice with no problems. Looks like he is aready to go, and is "probable" on the injury report. We know that Houston has a soft D, I really hope we just pound the ball at them with CP/Betts/Duckett, then work the playaction and get Brunell comfortable throwing the deep ball again. Let's hope we can dominate this game on both sides of the ball and use it as a big confidence booster. Oh and I saw Rock Cartright last night at a Redskins event in Virginia, crowd response was pretty awesome. |
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
Having such a dynamic play-maker back is going to be a big boost for our offense. This will will result in more time on the field for the O and less for the D. Now the D can take a moment longer to analyze strengths and weaknesses as the game progresses. Hopefully, we'll see more turnovers as a result which gives the O more reps. I see this as a sort of regenerating feedback loop.
I am now officially pumped for this weeks game! |
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
I'm intrested to see that if our O can hold on to the ball for some long drives will that help our D.

Re: Houston, you have a problem.
I want to see the following mix of passing/running:
1%/99% All Portis, all day. |

Only if it's one of those little WR screens to Moss! |
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
I really think we need to get back to basics. Enough with the motions and fancy sets. Let's get back to what carried us to the playoffs last year.
Good old power football. Ram it right down their throats. Enough with all the off tackle runs, I want to see us slamming it right up the middle. That's the only way we're going to turn this around. This OL is built for smashmouth, so let's get it on! |
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
I don't want to overwork CP either though, I'd like to see a 50% CP 25% LB 25% TJD split or something of that nature. If Portis reinjures himself we will be even more screwed down the road.

Saunders loves the misdirection and off tackle runs, although I think those plays will be much more successful with Portis running them. As far as passing, I think Brunell needs to throw the ball a signifigant number of times, to either work out the kinks in his execution, or prove to everyone that he can't run the offense. |
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
Panthers cant win without Steve Smith.
Skins cant win without Portis? ANY team should be able to win missing one guy.I dont give a damn who it is. |

We're also missing Shawn Springs

No way will CP be the dynamic back he was last year because he's not 100%. He'll be fine and help but I'm not expecting to see the CP of last year this year. |

In most cases, yes, but there are exceptions. Portis is one of them. Rivers would look like ass without Tomlinson. Eli Manning would not be nearly as good without Tiki behind him. Alexander makes the Seahawks better, and so on. |

Re: Houston, you have a problem.
Portis or no Portis. Spring or no Springs it starts in the trenches IMO. The offensive line failed to create holes for the running backs. I do understand that with Portis in the game he may have been able to make something out of nothing but he isn't a miracle worker either. Ladel Betts, as much of a bum as he is he should have had a fighting chance. Brunel has about as much time as it takes for me to say Oh Shit to throw the ball 75% of the time. I cannot comprehend why there is not one running back besides Clinton who can pick up a blitz. The defensive line...if you saw the Cowboy game then I don't think I need to say much more.
i am boosted that Portis is playing this week because he should be able to see those tiny creases and hit them at the right time but the lines MUST step up. HAIL |
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
I definitely agree about the O-line needing to step up. That's the one unit I'm probably the most disappointed in so far. They're better than what they've shown so far, alot better.

It wouldn't be much of a move I guess, OLine is the same, Rb is the same etc.... The Key is Portis. He is the best player in the NFC East. He is probably the 8th best player in the entire League. You notice when he is gone. One last thing about Favre. He has to say he isn't interested in a trade. He doesn't have any options. Look at Steve McNair, he had to hang on and on in Tennessee so he doesn't look like the bad guy and the organization can say we tried and now we need to Reload. Favre would work in Washington. Who else has the stature as an organization to appeal to him. Who else has a defense good enough to make a Run. Who else has all those factors and offensive weapons that Favre would love to have. When I heard Favre say he didn't want a trade, it sounded like the vote of confidence that a GM give the coach before firing him. Favre has to play the good guy, the Packer forever, it makes him easier to deal in the end.... |
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
I will be at this game in Houston...I sure hope CP can just light it up and open up some things for this offense.
|
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
Why would we potentially swap a 1st round pick with Denver and not really use the guy??? Portis should get about 60 % of the carries then let Duckett just pound it right down their throats!!! Maybe give betts a few carries for good measure :-)....I really think we need to use this Horse of a man (Duckett)right up the gut!!!

Re: Houston, you have a problem.
I see that the redskins are not really capable of beating anyone without Mr. Portis running the ball. I had predicted a banner year for them, but now I think they stumble too much and better win this week or risk becoming bogged down in the squabbles and finger pointing will start. What an unexpected mess they are in

Re: Houston, you have a problem.
Its the little things that portis does that makes him such an asset to our team. I watched inside the nfl on hbo and on the two highlights they showed off brunnell being sacked was greg ellis running through a ladell betts block and greg ware running through a tj duckett block. If there is one thing you can count on is the blocking of portis but if the shoulder isnt 100% how good will his blocks actually be? thats the key question on portis is you ask me right now.

Re: Houston, you have a problem.
Personally, I think we need to drop Betts, he hasn't done anything really over the past two years (excluding the KO runback in Tampa Bay in 05). He looked horrible both weeks Portis was out. TJ Duckett hasn't looked much better but I think that he will once he backs up Portis. The Finese/Power should be an extremely potent running game.

Favre is a MVP, Super Bowl Ring, bona fide first ballot Hall of Fame Quarterback. He picks up the playbook by his second game. So for a game you have to rely on your RB - he's pretty good your RB! If Favre has people to hand off to, to pass to, and a Coach who he would have to respect, he won't be heaving up those no-hopers we have seen lately. |
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
Brett Favre = HAS BEEN. He should have retired last year. Great qb in his day. but his day is long gone.
|
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
I would gladly take Favre... even next year.
The guy still has it, he's just on a bad team, simple as that. He should have took off this year and went to a winner. Team loyalty is fine and great, but would anyone have blamed him for trying to win another championship elsewhere?? |
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
Morale is really in the shitter when it is Friday and no one has posted a link to the opponents fan site for talking smack.
Then again, I haven't seen any Texans fans stopping by here either. |
Re: Houston, you have a problem.
I can't find a Texans fan site, and there isn't one in the fan site alliance we belong to.

While they certainly don't hold a candle to the Redskins cheerleaders, without question Texans have the very best NFL cheerleaders in the state of Texas. In spite of the long history and reputation, the Texans are head and shoulders (or T&A as the case may be) over the Cowboys in this important category. |

Frankly I'd just like to see SOME system and have us stick with it for a few seasons for the sake of consistency. |
