Houston is THAT bad...
The question is always posed, do we look that good, or do they look THAT bad...I think they looked that bad.
Don't get me wrong, I saw significant improvement in the call playing on D, and the offensive line, however a HUGE issue for us was that Brunell could not see downfield and was afraid to open the offense. I feel that issue is still a major issue. We beat them with the same offensive scheme we employed vs Dallas and the Vikes. ie: screen passes and dink dumps. That theory proved not to work vs Dallas and Minnesota so why did we stick with it today? We face the Jags next week and a stout defense, yet I don't feel our offense is actually clicking. (yes, I do realize the amount of yards we put up) Our secondary still looked amazingly weak too. Hopefully we gained a lot of confidence though...you can't put a price tag on that. Positives: what a running game!!! That was impressive. The dirt bags controlled the line of scrimmage, and having Portis back was outstanding. Better play calling on defense, especially better penetration by d-line. So there is a lot to build on, but I feel we faced a weak team more than we came together. What do you guys think? |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
We'll see next week. I enjoyed it. I'm drunk. Seeing portis run around and betts and seeing the ball get out there in the hands in some of our players was nice... yeas texas stinks, but I hope we started gelling again today.
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
Would be nice if we had a Houston on our schedule every week, but unfortunately there's not a lot of them around.
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
I think whenever are O-Line has the size advantage no team will win against us, they did a great job pushing them back and was a whole team effort. It also helps that we played the Texans.
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
I'd tend to say Houston looked "THAT" bad as well - except that Brunell set an NFL record for consecutive completions. Sure, the bad Houston Texans helped in that, but plenty of great teams have pounded the Texans without the passing efficiency that Brunell chalked up.

Exactly, and as I've said before during week one they had the Eagles on the ropes for a half or better. So while they aren't a good team, we'll take it. Every one of us! |

Brunell didn't have to go down field, and I'd rather see him throw those little passes and keep the offense going, rather than to bomb it down field. Sure, it's exciting to see the QB go deep, and there was a play where he threw to his check down guy too quickly, but you can't knock the coaches for letting Brunell run the offense with high percentage pass plays. |

yeah, I wonder if we set a record for minimal yards per completion. And if we didnt it wasn't brunell's accuracy, but the playmakers runs... WAY TO GO BRUNELL FOR NOT SHORT-HOPPING A BUNCH OF SCREENS AND SHOVEL PASSES!!! WOOOHOOOO |

I don't care how we win, so long as we win. However, I think that it is difficult to run a ball-control offense if you don't occasionally go deep. A good ball-control offense runs it, runs it, runs it, and throws deep balls to keep defenders off balance. I do not think it will be possible to run the kind of offense we ran today next week against JAX. |

I am not saying we should have bombed away on offense. But I was concerned that our longest pass play was about 15 yards. In our previous 2 games the defenses were all up on the line of scrimmage, meaning they did not respect our passing game. Anyone watching the films of today's game would not respect the passing game either. We did a salutable job on making them fear our run though. The Texans did an absolutely horrendous job of adjusting on defense. We took advantage. There are plenty of positives to take out of this game, but the 22 straight completions doesn't take away from the fact that our passing game is still not clicking. |

What do you guys think?[/quote] To most of the NFL, the Redskins are that bad also. Its the How Have You Played Lately syndrome. However the Texans are the team that we played today and on the whole our team played well. Next week is another team and a new set of challenges to face. Right now I'm enjoying a long awaited victory. Well done team! |

Exactly my point. I totally agree. |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
We definitely need to get rid of the penalties. That is a huge issue with us. Also, I think Portis returning had a big effect on the offense.
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
yeah they are very bad. it seemed like our RBs would gain 5-6 yards before they were even touched. it's a good confidence booster at least. we'll see how they hang with jacksonville next week.
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
in the first half brunell through every ball less than 10yards down the field, he was 24/27 in think but they were short passes, still hasnt fixed our downfield problems, next week we play jacksonville, that will be the real test........
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
Cripes! How about Portis is THAT good. Houston has a terrible Defense. The entire world knows that but the 'Skins simply pounded the ball with an aggressive Clinton Portis running the ball. He would have gone for over 200 yards if they had let him in the game (maybe). We played excellent on both sides of the ball, despite the 12 penalties.
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
Lil confidence boster...The colts played them and manning coulden't break a NFL RECORD...look at it that way...
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
With Clinton, we are that good....You better believe he set everything in motion today.
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
I still feel the play calling was conservative, and we got really really lucky with the fumble, and the personal foul call, or it would have been an 8 pt game with time left. Secondary still looks terrible. We still need to open it up, with some deep play, otherwise we will NOT have a good time at JAX. Also do not expect Brunell to get that much time again to throw with the Jags front line.

But Hoo, you have to look at as a building block. No doubt, this offense took a step forward this week. That's the underlying moral story here. |

It has to be a curse....KC's Defense was terrible when saunders was there and the OFFENSE KICKED ASS!! |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
Won't happen here 86. We have Sean Taylor!
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
Think about this people....The year Gannon Set that record.....The Raiders went to the Big game..
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
seems the game plan was tweaked to keep MB in the pocket less w/ quick throws. So they executed the game plan. If he was supposed to look deep, he didn't, that's all that worries me.
I expect to see some max protect v. J'ville. We'll have to beat them in the air, they're gonna stack the box w/8. This game has a couple subplots; MB & Wright vs. old team & Leftwich cimin hime. |

Re: Houston is THAT bad...
Hey, we beat a bad team I dont think anyone is questioning that. If we played (say the Seahawks in Seattle today), it could have been alot closer. Overall though, we just played a much better football game on both sides of the ball.
Brunell, as much shit as you want to give him for only throwing short, played a good, smart game. We may need to open it up a little more down the strech this year, but he played well today, no doubt. Portis coming back was a lift for the offense, somthing I think Springs coming back to the D can do as well since we should be able to blitz a lot more with him back. I'm very happy with the team today. I understand it was the Texans, but it was still (hopefully) the buliding block that I was hoping that this game was going to be. |

Re: Houston is THAT bad...
I think it was a combo of a bad team meeting a good team that is just starting to wake up.
Today's positives: --The offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage. If it wasn't for the penalties it would have been a flawless performance. --We finally got Brunell in a rhythm. I don't care if it was just short and quick stuff, the bottom line is he got the job done and got everyone involved. That will work wonders for his confidence. If anyone needed a game like that it was him. --Yes Portis is that important. He's the straw that stirs the Redskins' drink. He changes the entire dynamic of this offense. The negatives: --Penalties, penalties, penalties. |

I couldn't believe the name of this thread!...made me sick!...Just got back from bar watching the game with the family......FINALLY something to be excited about...we beat a team that we should beat..the way we should beat them!!!... and this DOWNER DUMB ASS title of a thread.....Yes they THAT bad but we beat them like we should have. UGGHHH was looking to chat about the strides and confidence BOTH sides of the ball got from this game, and i see THIS thread 1st..:vomit: |

I agree that eventually we do need to go deep, but I also believe we keep running it like we did today, and we keep building Brunell up with those smaller, high percentage passes, and eventually receivers are going to get open deep. Today was about getting some confidence back into Mark Brunell and the rest of the offense. Hopefully they will build from there. |

This is what you have to do...play with your players' strengths, and eventually the offense is going to open up so we will see some deep passes. Defenders are going to start crowding the line to stop the short passes and the running, and that is when you start throwing it deep. We just have to be patient. |

I don't think we'll be able to play that kind of football and beat Jacksonville. It worked today because the Texans are inept. The short passing game was good for Brunell's confidence, we got a win, and JG does not have to listen to the bench Brunell stuff for a whole week. So, he's off the hook at least for this week, but I just don't think dinking and dunkin will get it done next week. Glad we got a win, will take them any way I can get them. |

Re: Houston is THAT bad...
No doubt Houston is weak. But as folks have been saying, we did what we needed to do--pound a weak team into submission with ball control.
Remember, this is STILL a very new offense. It takes time to get a rhytm, especially on the longer passing game. This game was the perfect way to get some of that rhythm. We're of course going to have to be better. But this is a start. Now it's back home for JAX, and we'll see if we can do it against a good team. PS I really don't see how one can bitch about Brunnell in a game where he sets an NFL record for passes completed in a row and leads the team to 28 points. Cripes, what do y'all want from him? To morph into Dan Marino suddenly at age 36? He is what he is, and Saunders did a great job exploiting his skills today. |
