Why did we trade for duckett?
this trade makes no sense to me we trade two draft picks for a guy who didnt even dress out last game. why make this trade i know portis was hurt and betts was a little banged up. i know betts is fa after this year but what i read in the USA today they also said duckett was a FA. if this is true we trade two picks away when if we wanted him to replace betts if he left we could have got him for free. and we arent using him right know he might walk after this season to another team. i just dont understand there moves sometimes in the front office. if we needed a player at any position we needed a another CB or O-lineman. This week is a big week for us to prove ourselves v.s. a good defense we need this win so i hope everyone that goes makes that place a living hell for leftwich.

Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
Portis insurance I believe. Mabye a bigger role awaits him, but it baffles me as well.
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
cause we still had a draft pick left to trade. geez, what's with all these silly questions.
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
The season isn't over is it?
Just checking. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
I know it's very early, but so far most of our new acquisitions are not having much of an impact other then messing with team chemistry. I hope there's some more gelling before this weekend's game against a tough and solid team.
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
I think he still has a role in short yardage situations.
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
Season is still early. His role will increase as weeks go on, trust me. Get him to learn our system and next thing you know, we have our Byner & Riggs again! Can you imagine if we had a Sellers in 91 in front of them 2?
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
duckett is big, but he's also surprisingly fast. I'd bet he'll have a role (unless they're trying to hold him out to get an extension for next year... but honestly, i don't see that happening).
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
Maybe for when Mark gets Geriatric we become a run only type of club since the QB's are such a eyesore.
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
I think you are asking the wrong question....
The issue isn't why we traded for TJ. Break it down and we got great value. The issue is, why aren't we using him. There have been three plays so far this season where it has been 3rd and short and he hasn't been in the game. |

I can only assume that they will use them soon. This offense has the potential to explode. I'm excited. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
A waste of draft picks......again!
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
Duckett can crush people...
I wanna see it. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
why not have him in on short yardage? less beating for portis, and duckett ,in my opinion, is a way better option than betts

Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
After Rock's fumble that was returned for a TD last week (before a penalty called it back) I don't think we'll see him carry the ball again this year. With Portis healthy Betts can go back to kickoff duty and Rock may be inactive for a few weeks depending on matchups. Duckett will make his prescence felt sooner or later.
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
Y'all need to look beyond this year. Next year, Portis' salary will be more than double to $7M+ and we will have to cut or trade him. Then TJ will be our feature back. It's the TVRB (Time Value of Running Backs).

That's a great point about Rock. Remember, he fumbled last season in K.C. which turned out to be the difference in the outcome of that game. It seems he's good for a critical fumble in at least one game a year. It could have devastating in Houston last week. You have to wonder how much more of that Gibbs will put up with. All signs point to Duckett as next year's 2nd man at running back. |

So between Portis, Betts and TJD, we really can't take all 3 on our active squad for each game, since none of them play special teams. This year there will most likely always be an odd man out, and so far its been TJD. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
Right now, the trade seems a little strange. Maybe its for a backup role next year.
As far as goal line-short yardage situations I would rather have our #1 guy in there, CP. He's a pretty good shortyardage back the last time i checked. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
They'll probably re-work Portis in the offseason or give him a new contract altogether.

Wrong again Flanders. There's no way they will cut Portis. His $7 million cap figure is mostly comprised of base salaries and roster bonuses which can easily be converted to signing bonus if need be. He's not going anywhere. |

They god damn well better keep him happy. |

Seriously...and it usually takes the Redskins more than just one year to turn a fan favorite/superstar into a pariah...;) But really, I can't see Clinton going anywhere. They'll get something worked out. As for TJ, he's also in the last year of his contract, if memory serves me correctly, so I agree...what was the point? Is he gonna replace Betts? He is far better than Ladell Betts. (Who I think may actually be made of glass). But not having used TJ thusfar just seems odd to me. I think he could be well served as a short yardage back, I also think he's easily the second best running back the Skins have on their roster. So, all that said, I thought he was acquired to replace Betts...I still think he should. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
After our stretch run last year and last week's explosive performance, is there any doubt who the face of this franchise is now?
Gibbs LOVES him some Portis. He's not going anywhere. |

God hear you. The Clinton is only 25 too. second youngest starter on the team. :pimp: |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
We traded for him because he is a horse who can run over everyone....we just do not need him when portis can run around the Texans with ease.
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
They won't have to do anything to keep him happy. All they have to do is pay him according to his contract, which can easily be done within the cap if you just do a simple renegotiation converting roster bonus to signing bonus. Keeps his cap figure low and gets him the money due to him.

Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
a big contract isn't an instant ticket out of town unless you can't live up to it (ie arrington). they're keeping wynn as a 4mill$/year BACKUP. brunell will be gone way before portis... the only reason portis would go is if we had edge or LT under contract.
If we drafted more, keeping studs wouldn't be as big of an issue. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
Setting up to use Betts as trade bait for the next off season.

he's contract is out in the offseason. a guy that's not under contract can't be traded. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
I think he still has a role in short yardage situations.
Just like in Atlanta. He rarely ran for much yardage, just TDs. He's never had more than 200 carries in a season. He's a great insurance policy even if Portis and Betts are still doing the scoring. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
i thought we already established that betts has NO trade value.
|
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
After much debate, give and take, posts, and interface on this issue, I decided to do some under-cover investigating.
It was determined that when T.J. Duckett first learned that the Redskin play book was 700 pages long, the native Michigander and MSU graduate's response was: "Is someone going to read to me?" After the blockbuster trade for T.J, and when plays were first called in the B&G practice, T.J. would run laterally, E&W as opposed to N & S. Something to do with Hotlanta, according to the coach-speak. Hotlanta, you see, is controlled by something called a "Vick", who as all Fantasy owners know, is not a controllable substance. T.J. was always known in Atlanta as the last "D" in the DVD. The uncontrollable substance, the 'Vick", # 7, and aka. Ron Mexico, had affected the T.J. HD! So, Coach Al Saunders, and HOF Coach Gibbs have the T.J. in the shop, tinkering with the navigational system, re-directing his headlight assembly to recognize a #8 "MB", and are attempting to install a new "compass". Buges further diagnosed a hard-wiring problem, installed a new "CP" "U", which is always the B&G first option anyway, and recommended a GPS. When we see T.J. again, there will be a distinct difference in his hard-wiring, and his recogition of the "CP" "U". But, alas, we will never see under his pads, to notice the scars. True story! All of the above has been fully researched with nameless Redskin insider sources, fully documented over the past several weeks, and we will have an on-field resolve in due time. |

I think Betts established his value to the team too. :) |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
I say we find a club that is hurting at RB (a la Houston) and trade Betts - TODAY. His value us way up after a big week - and with TJ, we don't need him.
Let's trade him while he's still capable of bringing us something back in return. At least what we coughed up for Duckett. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
They need to start using him in short yardage. there is no reason to pound portis into the line on 3rd and 1 when we have that big boy sitting on the bench. Most 3rd & 1 runs result in either no gain or 2 yard gains. We should be keeping CP fresh so that he can make game changing plays. Ducket was good in those situations in Atlanta so lets give him a shot.

I would rather see Ducket on the team next year than Betts anyway. Ducket compliments Portis better in that he's a big powerful back. I don't think Betts is special in any area. He is neither an inside power runner or an outside speed back. He's just average all around. |

While agree that he's not really special in any one area, I would acknowledge that he has good vision. I'm not a big fan of him, he's not the hard runner everyone makes him out to be, but he can get into space and make a few plays. He finds holes and gets through them. However, I agree, Duckett compliments Portis much better and is a far better back. |
Re: Why did we trade for duckett?
Simple answer, because Portis was hurt and so was Betts. If you ask 10 people about the degree of Portis' injury you get 10 answers.
They had the flexibility to make the move so they did. It is that simple. |
