skins skin jags: Thoughts?
i predicted right here that the redskins would exploit the jags D, but i cant believe how good our offense played against arguebly the best defense in the league.
i'm not trying to be cocky or ignorent but i believe that we have th best offense in the league, don't think that is to big of a stretch to say. what are your thoughts on the game all? |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
I have no more thoughts they are bums.
Moving onto the Giants. |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
Some stats:
481 yds total offense 112 yds for Clinton Portis on the ground (a lot of it up the middle!) 4 penalties (low, especially considering the 'orchestraded celebration' junk) 22 1st downs (11 passing, 11 rushing!) 7/14 on 3rd down 33 yds rushing allowed 36 points against a "division I" team 4 sacks |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
I was going to do a new thread for my game thoughts, but this one is good:
1. Why can't game attendees get in their seats for a 4:00 kickoff? Don't they know they're missing the marching band? 2. We shouldn't run a flea-flicker out of the close offset-I on 2nd and long. They are going to be playing the pass there anyway. 1st and 10 or 3rd and short are the better situations. 3. Randy Cross is horrible. Dick Enberg is one of my favorites. It's a wash with the announcers. 4. Santana Moss is absolutely brilliant. 5. If we are going to get an excessive celebration penalty for something that tame, we may as well circle up and do the Doc Walker fun-bunch thing for good measure. 6. Our secondary needs to do some serious tackling drills. 7. Can anyone name me a college kicker who can't outdistance Hall on kickoffs. (I am accounting for the 5 yard difference.) 8. Llloyd really is afraid of contact. He's got those Westbrooke baby-deer legs and melts when a defender gets within 5 yards of him. I think that if there were a tree on the field he would jump up in it to not get hit. 9. We should move Phil Daniels to safety. 10. The coaches were very disciplined in alternating Betts for Portis. This will payoff at the end of the year. I would have been sorely tempted to go All Portis in the second half. 11. Opposing Defensive Coordinators are going to have a lot to chew on with this tape. Who can they concentrate on? The snowball grows.... 12. Did I mention that Santana Moss is really good? |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
8. Lloyd----
Lloyd has the strength and build of a crack head but he will come around. Good thing NY has a lotta crack to be purchased, look for Lloyd to emerge next Sunday. |
You say that because the play didn't work. I don't mind at all throwing a flea-flicker on the first play of the game, especially against a defense known to be aggressive. Agree on everything else you mentioned, especially the secondary. Can we PLEASE get Shawn Springs back now? |

2nd down is not automatically a passing down. No matter, the benefit of doubt goes to Al Saunders. With his play calling, if you were the Jacksonville defense today, you just didn't know what to do. |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
Number 8 had me laughing my ass off!!!!!!!!! I agree he needs to step-up his game. This offense is starting to hit it's stride. So many weapons, so many choices. This the second game of the regular season. From hear on out we need to go undefeated.

I agree that Saunders called a great game. All I'm saying is that Jacksonville was not fooled at all. I think the 3rd quarter is the best time to call a trick play because the opposing coaches are completely wrapped up in the flow of the game by then. Surprise onside kicks work well then too. But these are only my crackpot theories. I'm sure the coaches had reasons to believe the play would work an that way at that time. They analyze those things in every conceivable way. |

Yeah, Jacksonville seemed like they were ready for the trick plays tonight -- the option pass by Randle was another example. But that's one of the advantages to this offense: Key in on Randle El, and we'll hit you with Moss and Portis! Lots of weapons to deal with here. Soon, once Cooley and Lloyd become fully in sync, they will be another dimension defenses will have to contend with as all of the facets of this offense start firing on all cylinders. When that happens, watch the fuck out. |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
I just got home from the game. I don't really have much to say except that the game was one of the most fun ones I've been to in a long time. We were out of our minds crazy the entire game and I really loved every minute of it; even when it seemed like we could blow it. Basically, that was awesome and I hope the good times keep rolling.
Oh, and pennies in empty beer bottles make great noise makers while in the stands. |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
Besides that one catch Brandon Lloyd had a terrible game. I can really see what the 49er fans were talking about when they said he is afraid of contact, and good for only a highlight reel or two. He had two costly plays (penalty and fumble) that could have very well ended the game for us (if we lost, everyone would want his head). He needs to step it up big time.
|
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
This post is for my brother, wilsowilso, who I know had as much fun watching that game on the other side of the world, (NYC), as I did in the super dirty dirty, (Argentina):
Hell yeah!!! |

He made 2 nice catches in the game, and he broke away from his defender only to have the ball overthrown on what would've been a TD. I wouldn't go ahead and throw in the towel on him yet... |

"Besides that one catch"... Do you mean the huge one that helped them win the game? "Step it up". Like make a huge 3rd down catch on a critical drive? Unf-ingbelievable. I wish people would read their posts before hitting the button. |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
I was actually pretty impressed with the special teams lately as well. Rock on KO's and Randle-El on punts have been outstanding- there's been some superior blocking up field for these guys during runbacks and it's led to superb field position for the offense. Return coverage has been nothing short of solid, as well.
I'm also extremely interested in seeing the progress of our rookie DTs from here on out. Golston and Montgomery are quietly stepping up while Big Joe is out with injuries. They may have been some of the best mid round grabs of the entire draft. |

Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
Other observations are:
Our O-line looks like a stable of Measts! (I like that name better than dirtbags..) Portis is a badass! Moss is a badass! I really like the fact that we are starting to become an exciting possesion team. Not only trick offensive plays, but who else got a little tingle when ARE flipped the ball over to ST on that punt return? I know nothing happened, but still, teams aren't going to know what the hell we're capable of all year, and thats exciting! Our D-line looks better, and if we can secure a couple of guys in coverage, I think the D will be back on track. We could take the Division next week if the Eagles lose tomorrow, and the Eagle's secondary is looking suspect, and Favre has a new rookie reciever that they don't have much film on... (keeping fingers crossed) |

11. Opposing Defensive Coordinators are going to have a lot to chew on with this tape. Who can they concentrate on? The snowball grows....
This is perhaps the most important thing you mentioned. It is great that we have now shown people we can small ball and medium ball it. We need to find someone who will let us throw bombs all day and someone to let us rack up 300 yards rushing. Then no one will know what the hell to stop. |

If you think Lloyd doesn't need to step it up your crazy. His celebration penalty set up a the Jaguar drive leading to a field goal... and his fumble could have very well ended the game. Defending someone contributing -6 points on the day just doesn't make sense... it's "Unf-ingbelievable". |

Seriously, I really don't get the calling for Lloyd's head right now. He went to tuck a ball and got it stripped... that shit happens... That penalty was bogus, as the Jags Leftwitch picked up his reciever in the endzone and put him on his shoulder and DID NOT GET CALLED... (don't know if anyone else noticed that) and the fact that we could not beat ANY AFC team we played last year and we just beat one of the BEST AFC teams and you're bitching about the couple of things that went wrong immediately after the game tells me its time to up the meds... I just think that there are far worse things that happened in that game than to be calling out Lloyd... Id worry about our D missing fucking tackles... we did give up 30 points! |

It doesn't get more simple than that.
My point was that Brandon Lloyd needs to improve, based on his performance today. A celebration call (while I disagree with the league rule itself, I feel Lloyd knew the rule, and it was a rather "bone-headed" and arguably game changing decision) and a costly fumble is not a good game. If we would have lost, this wouldn't be a debate. I think it's rather brash to discredit my "point" as moronic, but don't really care. |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
We should take it easy on Lloyd for a little while. I watched the game again on Tivo and he was playing hard. He was open alot, Brunell didnt get him the ball. I was impressed with the D and O lines. Yeah we gave up thirty points but it would have been worse if it wasnt for the pressure. The D has been better without "big" joe in there. I have never been all that high on him anyway. Give it two weeks you'll be looking for #64 jerseys in the stores.
When you create pressure from the middle it opens up the outside. |

I noticed that too. I seriously think that was one of the worst ref'ed games I've ever seen. The jags had a 4 play TD towards the ened of the game that either tied it or cut our lead to 3, but it shouldn't have been that easy for them because there seriously should have been a delay of game call on the 3rd play. I was sitting there in the stands looking up at the clock ticking, "3, 2, 1, 0..." and I looked down to see the ball still in the center's hands. No flags, big gain, TD on the next pass (it was that one where williams almost got his head knocked off by Taylor but still held on). The very next possession the same thing almost happened. I was watching the clok a bit more closely, saying out loud, "3, 2, 1, 0, 0!, 0!, 0!," and then the flags finally came out. I honestly think 2 or 3 seconds had passed before the ref whistled the play dead. I couldn't really see the Lloyd penalty from where I was sitting so I really don't know what to say about that one. |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
Can there be any bigger, more productive player deals than the aquisitions of Moss, and Portis. Dudes are totally clutch. Where would be without them? I heard Moss after the game make a statement like "I want to make the catch, I don't understand fallin' down after the catch. I want to run with it"
I also heard the first of the bandwagon jumpers on a postgame show. I think it was Shannon Sharpe saying "they have someting special down there. This team is just beginning to roll" I AGREE |

He said that early in the game one of the jags defenders said to him that there was no way he'd ge 100 yards and that basically they were going to kick our teeth in. Portis told Santana what that guy said and the 2 of them decided right there that they were going to demand some respect. i think they did just that. I LOVE IT! |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
I did! It was cool! just when I think they can't get any bigger, they surprise me with something like this. Look at the parts Moss has played in the big games over the last couple of seasons-incredible. Portis is a BLOCKER

Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
My random thoughts on the game:
-Great overall effort, I said earlier in the week that this could be a statement game and it definitely was. -The offense appears to finally be clicking. 1000 yards of offense the last 2 weeks. -This game was eerily similar to the first Bucs-Skins matchup last year. Two defensive teams where the offenses dominated. -Good call by the refs for not overturning that fumble. I definitely think it wasn't a fumble, but there wasn't conclusive evidence to overturn it. -Totally bogus penalty on Moss and Lloyd for that endzone "celebration". Guys pick each other up all the time while celebrating... then the Jags did the same thing later on and didn't get flagged. -Gotta hand it to the offensive line. They are really coming together. Dockery has been especially impressive. The guards held their own inside and won at the point of attack against one of the strongest interior lines in the league. I really wasn't expecting that. If they keep this up the sky's the limit for this offense. -Moss is a gamebreaker. Yesterday reminded me alot of his breakout game against Dallas last year. Give him a shot and he's going to make plays like that week in and week out. -Amazing what a running game and good pass protection will do for a QB, huh? Brunell started off shaky but overall I thought he played a very good game. -The final score really doesn't show it, but the defense started to show some signs of life. They did a great job at shutting down the run and forced the Jags to be one dimensional. -Hall is off the hook with me. Frost gets a pass since he's otherwise kicked so well all year. -I think we're finally starting to see what this offense is capable of. The Jags looked off balance all day. I think Saunders is finally getting in sync with the talent, and the players are finally getting comfortable in what they are trying to do. |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
I should also add that the huge cutdown on penalties was just great.
Not only did we dominate physically, but mentally we were sharp as well. |
Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
Best of all, no injuries today. Important when you consider we're going up against a bye-week-rested Giants team next week.

Agree on everything else you mentioned, especially the secondary. Can we PLEASE get Shawn Springs back now?
no, he's right, you shouldn't run it against a DL that gets that much push anyways, the % of failure is much higher against those DTs, especially that early when they're still fresh. |

Re: skins skin jags: Thoughts?
Personally I liked the early flea-flicker call.
If anything it gets the defense thinking, granted the result wasn't ideal but still, the idea behind it was sound. I think it's a good sign too that the offense is getting more and more comfortable and Saunders is using more and more of that vaunted 700 page playbook. We didn't see many trick plays last season until late during our stretch run, and then we saw one almost every week. |
