Is this lame or what?
From the Washington Post: Unsung Campbell Registers High Note - washingtonpost.com
"The NFL hit Portis in the wallet. After Cartwright's 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown Sept. 17 against Dallas, Portis raced 50 yards to congratulate Cartwright. Portis, who was inactive for that game, was notified last week that he has been fined $5,000 by the league." Along the same lines, the 15 yard penalty sunday appears to have been for someone picking Moss up in celebration. Okay, I have never been one for choreographed TD celebrations but, jeez, let the players show some spontaneous joy - you might find it infectous. |
Re: Is this lame or what?
if i were commish for a day, i'd kill that stupid rule, and give more leeway in TD celebrations.
make PI reviewable. reverse the new onside kick rule (where 5 players must be on each side) get rid of the inactives (where you have a 53 man roster, but not everyone is allowed to dress) ease up on the late QB hits (300lb linemen can't always stop in 0.01 seconds) by giving some leeway to refs to decide if the guy had ANY reasonable way of stopping in time (so there's no free hits). birds eye and QB cams (maybe as an after the fact sales item for download or dvd?) possibly a 5 yard foul penalty for the ticky-tack crap that doesn't really deserve 15 yards. full time refs look into hiring at least one official NFL announcer crew, since that seems to be the biggest complaint with the product. nothing major, but things i think might be worthwhile. |
Re: Is this lame or what?
That "celebration" penalty we got was total BS.
Lloyd picked up Moss, big freaking deal. That kind of stuff happens all the time, in fact the Jags did it later in the game and didn't get flagged. When they put this rule in place I don't think that's the kind of stuff they were looking to get rid of. Use your head refs. |
Re: Is this lame or what?
Totally agree--talk about your "no fun" league. What BS. What's next--no smiling?
|
Re: Is this lame or what?
Damn Refs are using the Redskins as an example for the rest of the league - "do this and you'll get fined"....except no one else is getting fined!!! I HATE THEM!!!

Hess has now posted, we should expect the obligatory 12th Man stalker post shortly:) . |
Re: Is this lame or what?
The celebration penalty is designed to stop what Mathis and the other Jag-off were doing after Mathis's interception. Not to stop players from congratulating each other.

I think we need ANOTHER new commish. |
Re: Is this lame or what?
Oh, and Portis should be allowed to wear red socks if he wants to.

Still stupid but they were doing the same crappy dance. |
Re: Is this lame or what?
No celebrating???? The fine for that is F"N crazy. They will let me dump beer, and mustard all over me in the stands if we score but if Portis congrats somebody he gets fined. NFL football policy will forever be lame, since it is a billion $ corp.
Whats next.... are they going to say no running with the football, only walking? That way the players can become apparrel models on a 100 yard runway. I dont believe the NFL to be anything more than a Consuming Corporate Whore. There should be an F'N council, why is there a tiny aged hobbit Mo Fo deciding the future of these mens conduct and changing our winters of enjoyment over this corporation? Money I know. But does a 1 hour game have to be 3hours long with massive commercial breaks if your lucky to see it at all with black outs to show 15 year old episodes of Friends, Darma and Greg or Ernest goes to Camp movies??? I just hate how NFL football has companies are all suckling off their teet, I just want to watch the Redskins beat the Giants ass on Sunday. |
Re: Is this lame or what?
Wow! So the penalty IS lloyd's fault! He didn't pick up Santana fast enough! ;-)

Your guys mom is lame! Oh snap.
|
Re: Is this lame or what?
if its not planned, then it should be OK. Portis running to congratulate Cartwright isn't worthy of a fine. and Dockery doing a horrible little dance bit isn't worthy of a penalty. as Riggo once said, lighten up baby

Re: Is this lame or what?
This is lame. Fining these spontaneous celebraions hurts the league. The human element of the game is removed. It also stifles the passion of the players. Since Tagliabue became commissioner and FOX began producing the games, there's been a consciencious emphasis on the passionate play of the league, and the NFL replaced baseball as the national past time. Now, a player can't passionately celebrate a good play? That just stifles the heart and emotion that makes this game so great. I just hate how it can be a needless momentum killer now. The team can't rally around big plays. If the actual players can't be passionate about their play. Why would a viewer be passionate about it?

The ref said that there were two players doing the same pose so it was a penalty. I'm pretty sure it wasn't cause he got picked up, but cause Santana and Clinton were standing side by side with their arms crossed. That said, still a bs call. |
Re: Is this lame or what?
".....cause Santana and Clinton were standing side by side with their arms crossed."
That's pretty radical stuff right there...Arms crossed? Now I can understand the neck slash gesture being banned but arms crossed? What next? A loitering flag in the end zone if you stop moving? Utter BS. |
Re: Is this lame or what?
The NFL tried to crack down on celebrations (Thank god they stopped Steve Smith, his idewas were awful) but players like Chad JOhnson, Joe Horn, TO have fun with it. This is the big boy league, if that teams feelings get hurt when scored on GOOD. You got scored on, take your ichy shuffle like a man!

Re: Is this lame or what?
I think the clebration rule is dumb. They should restrict the time the guys are there but I used to love things like the fun bunch jump and the dirty bird dance.
Bastards |

LoL what about the Funky Chicken...haha Merton Hanks...:-)

Bastards
I think the Fun Bunch is one of the main reasons that this rule ever came to be. Apparently a dallas player decided to break it up a long time ago and a fight broke out. I watched the NFL replay of the game last night and that flag was unbelievable, especially since leftwhich picked up reggie williams and carried him in the 4th. However, it may actually have been called on Portis because he stood next to Moss with his arms crossed for about .05 seconds, so maybe they considered that a group celebration. |
Re: Is this lame or what?
Clearly two guys standing next to each other and posing the same for 1 second is way worse than Chad Johnson doing the Funky Chicken for 10 seconds and looking like a complete dumbass. What a dumbshit rule.
|
Re: Is this lame or what?
As long as its not mean or taking a shot at the other team i think a TD should be celebrated....T.O. is a jackass...he Mocks everyones celebration..(did you see the santana moss FD celebration)
|
Re: Is this lame or what?
amd, the game you are referring to was right after Clark scored on Dallas, and the fun bunch was lining up, Dennis Thurman tried to get in the middle and prevent it. it didn't work and started a scuffle. i say let them celebrate. and if you dont want it, stop them from scoring
|
Re: Is this lame or what?
For once in my life I was right!!!!!
In Gibbs' press he was talking about the flag on the celebration and said that it actually wasn't thrown because Lloyd picked up Moss; it was because a player (it was Portis) stood next to Moss and crossed his arms in a similar fashion. The refs interpretted this as a pose and the flag came out. It's kind of BS, but I guess i understand it in terms of the rule. Plus, it explains why the jags didn't get a flag later on. |
Re: Is this lame or what?
Yeah, this rule came in to kiss the ass of dull-ass and to scr*w us. Sounds familiar? I mean, it really makes sense eliminating group celebrations. (Don't high-five, you will be flagged for choreography!) After all, football is an individual sport, right? OOPS!

I don't think it was Clark though. That was before GC's time I believe |
Re: Is this lame or what?
you might be right. it could have been monk. let me nose around and see if i can find the answer
|
Re: Is this lame or what?
IF there has to be a no-celebration rule, it should be TOTALLY subjective ... the ref should look at each incident on an individual basis, and decide if it's unsportsman-like.

It was the game where the Redskins went into Texas wearing combat fatigues. Dec. 11, 1983. Monk scored the TD Shameless Plug ;) http://www.thewarpath.net/2005-game-rewinds/9598-redskins-rewind-redskins-v-dallas.html When the Redskins and Cowboys met on December 11, 1983 the rivalry was as strong as ever. Both teams were 12-2 going into the match up at Texas Stadium. Having won the season opener over the Redskins, a win would mean the NFC East for the Cowboys. But the Redskins were ready to battle, so much so that they arrived at Dallas wearing army fatigues. And early on, it looked like the Redskins would win this war easily. On their first two possessions, the Skins scored two touchdowns to jump out to a 14-0 lead. But Dallas wouldn’t go down quietly. The momentum shifted when Riggo was stopped on 4th and inches at midfield allowing the Cowboys to start a mini-rally and go into the locker room down just 14-10. The momentum shifted right back at the start of the second half, with Dallas facing 4th and less than a yard at midfield. Landry called for a hard count to try to draw the Redskins offsides. Instead, the TV cameras caught a shocked Landry on the sideline as White audible and handed it off to Ron Springs who was quickly stuffed. Rookie CB Darrell Green would help seal the game with an interception that set up a 43-yard TD pass from Joe Theismann to Art Monk. John Riggins put the final nail in the coffin with his second TD of the day, his 23rd of the year (tying OJ Simpson for most rushing TDs in one season…whatever happened to that Simpson guy?), to make the final score Redskins 31, Cowboys 10. |

I remember that game. It was the reason for this rule. The cowpies were so pathetic running into the middle and waving their arms around. Next season, guess what? No excessive celebration. Brings back memories. Man I feel old. |

tafkas, thanks for picking up my slack. i guess the old memory just aint what it used to be

Thank my brother. He's my go to guy to confirm Redskins games from the first Gibbs era. That's his favorite Redskin game of all time. He can recite that sucker almost play by play |
