The top 20 sports rivalries
http://www.suntimes.com/output/sports/cst-spt-rival09.html
Cowboys-Redskins: In the beginning, it was Tom Landry vs. George Allen, and each was disliked by the other side. Now, it's Jerry Jones vs. Daniel Snyder, and the hatred runs deeper. One of the reasons the Cowboys remain in the NFC East after realignment is because of this rivalry. The Redskins' problem is much like the Bears' is with the Packers -- they haven't found much success against the Cowboys in the last 10 seasons. |
Other than the obvious Skins-Cowgirls, I think the top of each sport are:
College B-ball: UNC-Duke College Football: Army-Navy Pro B-ball: Lakers-Celtics Pro Baseball: Yanks-Sox Pro Hockey: Aves-Wings Dude Tennis: Sampras-Agassi Chick Tennis: Serena-Venus Golf: Tiger-Everyone else Greco-Roman Wrestling: Gardner-Karelin Poker: Moneymaker-Farha Ping Pong: China-Korea Chess: Kasparov-computer World's Strongest Man: Samuelson-Karlsen Women's Basketball: Who am I kidding - I can't even watch this lame sport drunk. Couldn't name one player... |
All-Time Greatest Rivalries ...
NFL: Skins vs. Dallas, KC vs. Raiders, Bears vs. Packers, Steelers vs. Browns, Al Davis vs. Pete Rozelle College Hoops: UNC vs. Duke, UK vs. Louisville, UConn vs. Tennessee women College Football: Michigan vs. Ohio State, Army vs. Navy, Auburn vs. Alabama, Oklahoma vs. Texas, UCLA vs. USC Pro Hoops: Lakers vs. Celtics (Wilt v. Russell, Bird v. Magic... wow) Pro Hockey: Habs vs. Maple Leafs, Rangers vs. Flyers Boxing: Ali vs. Fraser Men's Tennis: McEnroe vs. Connors, Agassi vs. Sampras Women's Tennis: Martina vs. Chrissy Golf: Arnie vs. Jack Baseball: Red Sox vs. Yankees, Dodgers vs. Giants Horse Racing: Affirmed vs. Alydar And finally, the greatest rivalry in the history of mankind: USA vs. USSR |
Just a few comments on the rivalries suggested above:
POKER: You must have on your list here Doyle Brunson vs. Amarillo Slim. If you don't know those gentlemen, you do not know poker. Suggested reading: "Living in a World of Fat People" by Amarillo Slim. (Title may not be exact; I'm doing this from memory and senior moments happen...) NFL: You might want to add Bills/Pats to the list. Rams/49ers was big until the Rams moved east... BOXING: Add Tony Zale/Rocky Grazziano to the mix. |
Miami vs Flordia State
heh |
Figure Skating (that's right I said Figure Skating): The brief, yet intense, Nancy Kerrigan vs. Tonya Harding rivalry
|
NFL: 'Skins- Cowboys (of course)
College Football: Army-Navy (the best pure rivalry in sports) College B-Ball: I'll go with Georgetown-St. Johns back in the day. NBA: Lakers-Celtics (again back in the day) NHL: too many to name, but I'll go with one that I have personally been involved in: Caps- Flyers. Boxing: tempting to go with Ali-Frazier, but I'll be different. I'll go way back with Jake LaMotta vs. Sugar Ray Robinson. Soccer: Glasgow Celtic vs. Glasgow Rangers. The Old Firm. People who live over there know what I'm talking about. This rivalry has it all. Ethnic, political, and religous rivalries come into play here. At least one fan usually ends up dead after this one. Baseball: I'll go back in time to the Giants- Dodgers lovefests when both were in NY. |
NFL: 'Skins-Boys (Raiders-Broncos a distant second)
College Football: SC-Notre Dame (Ohio St-Mich, Tide-Auburn) H.S. Football: Long Beach Poly-De La Salle NBA: Lakers-Celts College Basketball: UNC-Duke Boxing: Leonard-Hagler (Ward-Gotti was pretty memorable) Baseball: Sox-Yanks Softball: UCLA-Cal (don't ask hehehe) Swimming: Hall-Popov UFC: Gracie-Shamrock |
What is the Warpath's greatest all time rivalry?
What is the Warpath's greatest all time rivalry?
I've got to go with sportscurmedgeon vs. optimism. :p |
BrudLee:
Mark Twain said that the only difference between a cynic and a realist is whether or not you agree with him. I prefer to think of myself as a realist. You are free to think whatever you will on this matter. :laughing- |
What is the Warpath's greatest all time rivalry?
good question, we've had some good ones
:argue: |
I think the biggest rivalry on here might have been between the moderators last week to try and get votes
|
greatest warpath rivalry? That's a tough one, but the words "Peter King" come to mind if you get my drift and how about Daseal vs. Everyone Else. Daseal is the man! Defending his boys TO and Spurrier to the death! Might not agree with him but you gotta respect him

Ade Jimoh Fan used to get a lot of flack until everyone realized the untapped resouce that Jimoh really was.

I don't remember getting any flack??! But it is good to see that everyone has come around on Ade - he's prepped for a monster year! |
Cookie Monster???
You mean Cookie Monster, don't you? Because I see him wearing Blue Camp Scrubs just before he is cut! I also see a FA taking his place.

NFL - Cowboys-49ers. Hate to say it, but they've played for the NFC championship more times than anyone else I can think of. And the 49ers have won a couple. TO celebrating on the star at midfield twice, I mean who else would do such a thing? To top it off, the next time he was in Dallas he celebrated on the star again, this time on the helmet in the end zone.
I just don't think it can be Skins-Boys any more because do we hate the Cowboys any more than say the Chiefs hate the Raiders, or Bears hate the Packers? I hope it returns to glory, but Cowboy fans have taken the Skins for granted for far too long, rivalries should contain some healthy respect and 11 out of 12 or however many wins it is breeds too much disrespect. |

Much more infact. My hatred for the Eagles has grown in recent eyars, but the fact that Dallas kept beating us only fueled my hatred more, as oppsed to me just giving up on the rivalry. :dallas: |

I know it fuels our hatred of the Cowboys, but I hang around a lot of Cowboy fans and it really has become one-sided, I think they kind of humor us now. I think it will come back quickly, but last year's home game let me know that just about no one on the Skins saw the Cowboys as our biggest rival. There's no way you come out that flat in a rivalry game, especially when you have a chance to potentially knock them out of the playoffs. THis year the rivalry is back, I want to see some spirit out of our guys. I mean since LaVar "retired" Aikman with that wicked hit in Texas Stadium it's been kind of quiet for our side. |
