Best/Worst Skins Free Agent Pick ups

Let's face it, we are known for our activity in the off-season more than our playing in the fall as of the past few seasons. So here's the question: Who is the best/worst free agent pick up this season and/or in recent memory.

this season: I would have to say the best was Portis...our running game was going no where fast and by getting one of the top 5 backs in the league we automatically help ourself with the run game. Worst I am going to say Brunell. I know alot of people may not agree with this statement but if you look at all the factors,(cost, losing a draft pick, injury prone, age) plus the fact that we obviously have our QB of the future in Ramsey. We could have easily found a solid backup for Ramsey for less cost (Couch, Collins, Blake, Warner etc) and picked up someone in our real problem spot....D-Line!!!

recent memory: No doubt that Doug Williams was our best free agent signing. With Schrador (sp?) injured we did not slow down one bit, so the Super Bowl MVP gets my vote. Worst....there are too many to pick one so here's a few Canidate to fill Davis' shoes!?!?!?, Deion- are we still paying him?, Stubafield, and Jeff George- seriously wonder what Marty and ol' Danny boy were thinking on that one.

Id say Stubblefield. Dont forget Alvin Harper!

I dont think that Canidate and Saunders were terrible moves, although Deion's contract could have been written better.

Anyone remember Stanley "the Sherriff" Richards?

ugh the guy couldn't tackle worth a damn

cpayne5 06-10-2004 02:24 PM

I hated Deion as a Falcon, as a 49er, as a Cowboy, and as a Redskin. I booed him at camp that year.
ugh the guy couldn't tackle worth a damn
Back then, nobody on the team could.

He had 10 INTs the year before we got him.
He never matched that number ever again.

SmootSmack 06-10-2004 02:37 PM

Wilber Marshall was a great pickup

cpayne5 06-10-2004 02:42 PM

Joe Jacoby was an UDFA, does that count?
Wilber Marshall was a great pickup
great call i forgot about him

Big C 06-10-2004 02:59 PM

Big Daddy...price was way too steep, wasnt it a first round pick, best move would be trading Gilbert and getting a #1, and takin Lavar or Samuels with it

SmootSmack 06-10-2004 03:06 PM

Larry Centers was a nice pickup I thought
bad pickups: Reidel Anthony and Jacquez Green...at least they came cheap

Big C 06-10-2004 03:07 PM

chris doering was a pretty good pickup last year

MTK 06-10-2004 03:16 PM

"cheap and available"

those were the days!

First of all, the Skins traded for Portis. He was under contract; he was not a free agent.

I suspect the best free agent pick up will be Lavernaeus Coles - when all is said and done - but after only one season, it's a stretch to give him that mantle yet.

If you consider Joe Jacoby a free agent - since he was undrafted - you have to give him the nod because he went from free agent to Hall of Fame candidate.

I think the worst free agent pick up - and there are so many nominees here - was Jeff George. His presence forced the Skins to release Brad Johnson who merely went on and won a Super Bowl. Then George basically tried a mutiny in the clubhouse with Marty and overturned that apple cart.

Lots of the other guys mentioned here as "worst pick-up" were not stellar players to be sure. But only the spin masters who feed hype to the sycophants in the Washington media thought Stanley Richards was any good. All you had to do is whatch him give up 4 Tds in the Super Bowl against the 49ers (when he was with SD) and you knew he was a stiff.

Stubby was a malcontent and a malingerer who had one great year in his contract year. He was not "great" before or after. The Skins were bamboozled.

Alvin Harper was made by the fact that teams had to pay a lot of attention to the "other side of the field" when Irvin was there. The Skins thohght he could be a #1 receiver; boy were they wrong. Someone else picked up Harper and tried to make him the lead receiver and he bombed there too. Too bad.

Deion was simply out of gas by the time Danny Boy wrote out his check.

Big Daddy? They paid too much to sign him, but at least he played and was marginally productive. That's a lot more than can be said about others here.

Jeff George - from his right shoulder to the tips of the fingers on his right hand - is one hugely talented QB. But between his ears he is missing a few important things one of which is the ability to get along with teammates and coaches. His history of bad times in the clubhouse was well known but Danny Boy went out and signed him and tossed that toxin into the clubhouse. Oh swell!

Jeff George was probably the worst. As bad as Canidate was, I mean after that hit he took from Bowen the handwriting was on the wall, George was worse. A.) He wrecked team chemistry as he was Danny's choice and Norv was forced to play him. He's like a stripper, he may look amazing but there's no way you can really live with him (apologies to those who date strippers). B.) He was replaced by Tony Banks, who himself was fresh off being cut by the Cowboys. And I applauded when they made this move, because while our pass protection was about as solid as hot jello George made no attempt to even pretend that he was going to stand in there. C.) I remain convinced that the 2000 Skins could have won the Super Bowl, they were just snakebit by Danny's questionable pickup of George. They were fresh off the NFC East title, had one of the better offenses in the league and a promising defense with Ray Rhodes aboard. D.) George led the Raiders to the playoffs and they had the #1 offense and no backup in sight and they let him go without so much as a thought. Then we slide in, and instead of paying Brad Johnson very reasonable money we sign George to make more than the guy who led us to the playoffs. Great, but it's the Danny way.

Does it show that I'm a little upset about that season?

Big C 06-10-2004 03:48 PM

i meant the year be4 that

SmootSmack 06-10-2004 03:57 PM

As Curmudgeon has pointed out, Portis was acquired via trade, as were some other players mentioned here, Brunell, Canidate, Wilkinson. But I got the impression that the general gist of this thread was about off-season pickups whether via trade or free agency

MTK 06-10-2004 04:18 PM

I'll forever hate the Jeff George move.

The '99 team had something going, they were building towards something. Snyder messed it all up by bringing in George. BJ was coming off a Pro Bowl season, he had just taken the 'Skins back to the playoffs for the first time in forever, and how is he rewarded? Snyder brings in his golden boy Jeff George and "hints" to Turner that he wants George to start.

I was a big fan of BJ before he came to Washington so I was pumped when we got him, even though he practically rolled into town in a wheelchair. I figured we finally had a QB we could hang our hats on for 5 years or so.

Thanks alot Danny!

If I could have a little one on one with Snyder that's all I would want to ask him, "What were you thinking by bringing in George?", well actually two questions, "How did it feel to watch Johnson win the Super Bowl?"

jrocx69 06-10-2004 05:41 PM

what about Gerald Riggs!!!!! lol aww man, he sucked... turned into our 3rd n goal on the one yd line guy

and i would say a very good pick up would be terry allen... we took a chance on a guy who had both knees reconstructed and was the most productive guy on the team for 2 years

Gmanc711 06-10-2004 06:51 PM

I'll only go for this season for now.

The Best Pickup was Portis, but if were going Free Agent, I'll have to go with Marcus Washington. I think this guy is gonna be a absolute monster within the next year or two. Him and Arrington should provide us with a big 1/2 punch from the outside. Shawn Springs could prove to be a exellent offseason pickup to replace C. Bailey, but we have to see if he can stay healthy first.

Worst: It's hard to tell now, but I'm going to say Brunell, just cause I'm such a Ramsey Fan, but I do like Brunell so who knows. Shawn Springs could also prove to be a waste of money, he is the biggest question mark pickup of our offseason, if you ask me.

MTK 06-10-2004 07:41 PM

I still cringe everytime I look at my BJ jersey hanging in my closet

:(

SKINSnCANES 06-10-2004 07:44 PM

I dont know if anyone mentioned it but Ken Harvey was a great pickup for us.

Big C 06-10-2004 10:22 PM

brad johnson was in no way a bad pickup, he went to a pro bowl, then threw him out for no reason, oh wait, snyder liked georges strong arm better. but, didnt we trade a #1 pick for him?
