National Review Online - Greg Norman

Geoffrey Norman on Redskins on National Review Online

The Washington Redskins have the week off, and this is bad news for many football fans. The ’Skins are losing, and looking like genuine losers when they do it, which gives millions whose hearts are in the heartland a sense of nearly lascivious pleasure. We’d like to see more of it; can’t, in fact, get enough of it. We loved it, weekend-before-last, when the Redskins were whipped at home by the Tennessee Titans — one of the league’s weaker teams — and their rookie quarterback, Vince Young.

We are officially the laughinstock of the NFL and any media that's still interested. :(

At this point why fight it? The guy said we got whipped at home by the Titans. That's not the proper use of the term whipped at all in my book. People should point and laugh at this team. They are all plenty rich and I'm sure could care less what non-Redskin fans think right now so why should we?

Re: National Review Online - Greg Norman

So is this supposed to be an editoral piece or real reporting, because I really can't tell.

I've save you time by summing him up for you:
This guy is just a complete a$$hole and I can't believe I just wasted 5 minutes of my life reading him. He basically just trashes the team and Danny Boy because the team spends a lot (still under the salary cap) and has done much. He basically says we're all idiots for liking the team and that all of middle America hates everyone who lives in DC. He brings up Snyder's buisness deal with Tom Cruise for some reason because, I guess, he thinks an NFL owner must only focus on his team and can't do other things.
He doesn't mention our great run last year, but I suspect that if he did he would either say we bought that good season or that we should have gone farther in the playoffs. I sort of trailed off half way through.

He might be the worst "sports writer" I've ever read. Take that Peter King!

Wow, that guy is a total asshole though. I can't argue with a lot, but he REALLY hates the Redskins.

Oh and I forgot to mention that writer is a real clown shoes butt sniffer!

TheMalcolmConnection 10-27-2006 01:40 PM

Re: National Review Online - Greg Norman

And he acts like the Redskins are the freaking Yankees. The reason people hate the Yankees is because they buy the best player each year and do "some" winning. I mean, how can you hate a team coached by Joe Gibbs? It's not like he's Bill Parcells with TO on the same team. I'm sure media figures love the Skins losing because of Snyder, but for a group of legitimate good people, I would think the Skins would rank right up there.

Would he be laughing and taking delight in the Saints losing all season?

ArtMonkDrillz 10-27-2006 01:42 PM

Re: National Review Online - Greg Norman

This is barely mentioned in the article but it's something I was thinking about the other day because I heard it mentioned elsewhere... Why are people still obsessed/pissed over the fact that Snyder made a buisness deal with Tom Cruise and invited him to a game?
Is it really that big of a deal that man is good at making money and is expanding into something like movie making? Should team owners drop everything else in their life and only focus on running the team? Should he sit by himself in the owners box and stare at the field like a mental patient for every game?
I wish all these critics would give it a God damn rest! I have no idea why this annoys me so much but it really does.

TheMalcolmConnection 10-27-2006 01:44 PM

Re: National Review Online - Greg Norman

It annoys me too. If he was a PLAYER OR A COACH hired BY the team, it's one thing. Redskins owner is not a job. He delegates things out to the people he HIRES, let's them make decisions, and signs the checks.
Would he be laughing and taking delight in the Saints losing all season?
Good point! Likewise, if we were winning I bet he would totally discount it because he would just say we bought a good team, even with the salary cap and all.

I'd much rather have an owner like Snyder who actually goes out and gets talent to come here than someone like Ralph Wilson who couldn't care less about field a crappy team year in and year out. Snyder is still a relatively new owner who bought the team when it was down so it's going to take him some time before he really figures it all out.

This guy really has me worked up. He really sucks.

TheMalcolmConnection 10-27-2006 01:52 PM

Re: National Review Online - Greg Norman

I mean he acts like Reggie Bush WASN'T the most hyped player coming out of college. I mean look at all the work Bush has done down in NO. Do you think he'd be laughing his douchebag head at them if they were 2-5? Damn, why don't you just TELL us which team you like.

Not only that, Redskins fans are notorious for writing back to assholes like him. I think some people just like the attention that an inbox full of angry Redskins fans brings.

Re: National Review Online - Greg Norman

Where's his article about the Eagles and how their fans throw batteries and are generally known as the biggest assholes not just in the NFL, but in the entire world of sports. They freakin' beat up Santa, and after each loss, you'd THINK that someone like him would be like, "That's what those assholes get."

But no, we have fans with passion and stick with a team through the thick and thin.

"Any Redskins’ loss is good news, but this defeat was especially sweet in a symbolic sort of way."

Seriously, this guy has me fucking pissed off. He didn't just take a shot at the team, he was taking a shot at the city, the fans, the players... everyone.

But because he doesn't like our owner we all get shat on. Maybe this guy applied to be a Skins waterboy in the 50's and he didn't get the job. Either that or he's a commie.

Anytime you give up 180 to a 2nd rate back like Travis Henry, sorry but that's being whipped.

What's even better, is where was this bullshit last year? We're losing and NOW it's OK to pile on. Why doesn't this guy fucking grow a sack?

Without a doubt, I agree the team has performed bodaciously below expectations, but still that doesn't make it right for some jerkoff to spout this kind of shit. It's one thing to criticize the team's performance this year, but seriously that's straight up shitting on the team and city.

@TMC
reggie bush is on track to have like 800 yards receiving, 500 rushing, and 450 on punt returns.

torry holt's rookie year was 800 yards. fitzgerald, and harrison too, and those guys might all end up in the HoF. I don't think he's underperformed for a 1st round pick so far...

I'm not saying he's underperformed (hence the reason I didn't say OVER-hyped). I'm just saying that he was a truly hyped player (similar to the entire Redskins offseason) and I was wondering if the Saints would get a free pass if they were sucking it up too.

TheMalcolmConnection 10-27-2006 02:11 PM

Or any team for that matter. I just take TOTAL offense to the way that asshole lays things out. There's a constructive way to say all those things he said.

Re: National Review Online - Greg Norman

Here's a better question, TMC - Where is his total ripping of the Dolphins? The Cardinals? The Cowboys? The Bucs? The Steelers?

Maybe if some of these teams were in bigger, more important cities he would have beef, but since they are smaller markets with a fanbase made up of simple folk with strong moral fiber and a respect of all things American they get a free pass. Us, we just have to sit here and take it.

Re: National Review Online - Greg Norman

I hate hearing the trash talk too, but at the same time when we're as bad as we are now I really find it hard to disagree with the smack talk. We suck, we're not winning, so bring on the heat.

What pisses me off is times like last year when we were winning down the stretch and still getting no respect.

TheMalcolmConnection 10-27-2006 02:15 PM

Re: National Review Online - Greg Norman

Yeah, it's like there's something about DC in general that he doesn't like. I mean the Dolphins are this year's TOTAL flop. They had some pretty big offseason acquisitions in Culpepper and Harrington. Both moves some would consider fairly laughable.

I mean, I've always thought we as a fanbase overexaggerated the media respect and disrespect issues. However, this is just an article that crosses the line. It would be like me having a problem with you and then telling you how much I hate your mom, your family and that damn dog of yours.

And just like he's taking pleasure in us losing this year, I hope he had his fucking head in a noose last year when we ran the table to the playoffs.

maybe he's just a dallas homer and that's why he doesn't care about other teams.

and yeah tmc, i'm sure any losing team would get fingers pointed at everyone for not doing enough.

Re: National Review Online - Greg Norman

I don't know this writer, so I am not aware of what he has written in the past. My beef is for the general attitude the media has towards snyder.

When snyder spends too much, and is involved in the operations of the team, the media says he's meddling. However, if snyder is involved in other business ventures (i.e.: Tom Cruise, and w/e he's doing with him), then the media jumps on snyder because he's not focused on the team (or whatever their problem with cruise is).

They're not offering an objective view of the team. They're not even offering a CONSISTENT opinion. They're just writing stories because they have to write something.

Yeah his hate for the Skins is kinda crazy, since when have the Skins been the big and bad team of the NFL. It has been a while, if anything the Redskins have been an underperforming organization for the last decade. I can understand this response if our free agent spending was working, and we were making it to the playoffs each year, but that is not the case.

As TMC pointed out, there is also a salary cap that we keep to. We don't deserve this hate, yet.
