Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell stayed up to watch the whole game Sunday night when Tony Romo won as a first-time starter for the Dallas Cowboys. "He kept his composure, played with a lot of poise," Campbell said Monday. "It's something you have to do when your first time comes." Campbell did his best not to sound envious, but he is still waiting for his first time. And with the Cowboys coming to town this week, the debate over when that should happen will only intensify. Romo's performance in the Cowboys' 35-14 victory at Carolina was vindication for Dallas coach Bill Parcells' decision to bench 30-something Drew Bledsoe and give an untested youngster a shot at energizing an inconsistent offense. |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
What bothers me about this, is you'd think that the way the Panthers played, the Cowboys would have STILL won even if Bledsoe was QB. Romo only had one touchdown.

Romo v Campbell is a rivalry that will begin next season. |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
Career-wise, Bledsoe is beyond the grave, while Brunell has a foot in it. The Cowboys needed that spark, and are fortunate that Tony Romo is the answer. I guess we'll see whether Brunell is really ready to go Sunday and take this offense to a level that really hasn't been seen yet this season.
|
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
It wasn't like Romo was making "money" throws. He overthrew and underthrew people a LOT. The Panthers played a piss-poor game.

We move the ball well and our redzone O isn't bad. We just always have poor field position and our TOP is low.
So one could argue that Brunell's "performance" is tied to that of his defense. I wouldn't. |

And thank God our QB's name doesn't rhyme with Homo.

No, it rhymes with shamble. |

judge romo after he plays a few more solid games, not just one, especially after how bad he was on his debut

debut start? cuz Homo played pretty damn good against Carolina. |

Good or Carolina played pretty damn bad? He missed a lot of open guys. Carolina just GAVE them that game on a silver platter. |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
Does any one else think he scrambles too quickly? I know that's something younger QBs tend to do, but I'm going to find it really funny when Marcus Washington KOs him a yard past the line of scrimmage on Sunday.

he looked good scrambling for some key first downs, but more importantly, when he did pass, he'd acquire his downfield target and fire it to them right after the drop. something sorely missing from "pat the ball and wait for the rush" Brunell, Bledsoe and even Ramsey back in the day. it's called attacking a defense, instead of being dictated to by them. |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
Marcus hell. I want Sean Taylor to give him a welcome to the NFL. And honestly, I'll TAKE a penalty if Sean shows him what's up for at least ONE hit this game.

I'm surprised the Panthers didn't intercept him more. He was very Ramsey-like out there, just with more mobility. He was gunslinging, missing open guys often. He played above average, but Bledsoe would have won that game too. |

I'm sure they told him about that this week in practice. Perhaps they should have kept Henson so he could teach Homo how to do a baseball slide.

i'd like Sean to save that hit for T.O. (again). Taylor can't be our only hope on this defense, he can't do everything. Marcus needs to come up and show the front seven what the hell is up. |

Ramsey was notorious for holding on to the ball too long, like Brunell is now. now i really hope i'm wrong about this, but maybe the Panthers didn't intercept Homo because he is accurate and can get it into tight spaces. two of those first interceptions the game before were off lucky tips. |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
I'm talking about the Panthers game. He had some passes on the money, but more than that he had passes where he missed his receivers REALLY bad. Like I'm talking had the DB been there, it was a sure INT.

would he have thrown to them if the DB WAS there? the fact that he saw and threw to the open guy is very promising for him, sounds like the rest he can work on with timing and more experience. ugh, gross. it's gotten to the point where i'm living my Campbell QB dreams vicariously through a cowgirl. could it get any lower? |

Good call Gigity, I noticed that too. Seems like a surefire way to get really hurt, especially when a big LB dives from head-on to stop him from getting an extra yard. |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
If Romo lights us up, then I'll retract all statements. But until then, let's see how he fares when he doesn't have to go only thirty-five yards.
|
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
With all the talk about Homo, lets not forget that Julius Jones is the real key. If we stop him and make Homo beat us we really have a chance but it all starts up front with our run D.
|
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
Right. Homo (I love that we can call him that) is no all-star by any means. He's STILL a rookie QB. I think with Griffin and Golston starting side by side we'd stuff the run quite well. I think Big Joe is about done unfortunately.

then for our sake, i hope i'm wrong wrong wrong. i also hope i'm wrong about Brunell not being willing to throw long, over the middle, or into tight spaces. |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
It was one game and what will be said next week after we whip up on Dallas? Even Parcells said it was one game and that the next week could be a different result.
|
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
It was one game, but Romo didn't look too bad. He kept a few drives alive with his scrambling, something Brunell used to be able to do. He also got rid of the ball on time, which kept those dbs away from his off target throws.
If we don't get a pass rush, then everything else is moot. The key to rattling any young qb is to get in his face, dirty him up, and do it all day. It'd be nice if Andre Carter would show up, or if more than 1 of our linebackers came to play, I love Marcus Washington to death but the next play Holdman makes will be his first. I want Rocky!! |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
Peppers was stopped most of the day, but look at what the Giants did to him. They made him look BAAAAAD.

i also hope i'm wrong about Brunell not being willing to throw long, over the middle, or into tight spaces.
I do too, but I think THAT'S something you're correct on. |

I've seen a lot of comments like this one on this thread. I am not totally sold on Romo being the next Manning or Brady but he, for sure, is much better than Bledsoe. I know you guys didn't watch the game like I did, but for those who remember, there was a 3rd and 13 play that I think told me that he is 100 folds better than Bledsoe. When the ball was snapped, the Panthers got very close to Romo and almost had a sack, instead, Romo slides JUST ENOUGH to the left and throws a very nice pass to Witten, I know for a fact that Bledsoe whould have been sacked. Twice Romo ran few yards to get the first down, now Bledsoe could've ran like that and we all know that, but he doesn't decide quick enough. By the time he decides to run everyone in the stadium, let alone the field and the sidelines know that it is the ONLY option. I don't think the Panthers played poor, but that was as good as they can do against a QB that can run. Don't believe me, I got your proof, look at Vick's numbers against them He looks like a superman against them. The Panthers look great against an im-mobile QB like Bledsoe and Brunell but with someone who can make them miss a tackel or run out of the pocket to make a throw they tend to look very average. |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
I'm not saying he wouldn't have played BETTER than Bledsoe, I just think Bledsoe would have won the game too. It might have been closer, but I think he would have also have won it. This weekend will be a good litmus test.

Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
I keep hearing that Campbell is starting this week.
Is this true? |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
Not a word. All rumor so far.

I saw him side step pressure a few times to make a throw or scramble for a first down. If he can keep the mistakes to a minimum there's no question he gives the Cowboys the better chance of winning over Bledsoe. |

I'm sure Bledsoe would've made some throws that Romo can't (yet). |

I don't think so, and here is why. How many sacks did the Giants have in the second half against the Cowboys, none or one I am not sure, compare that to the first half. You know why? By the time your read to this sentence to this point, Romo would have gotten rid of the ball. Bledsoe on the other hand, needs to check every single option and checks down then scan again and then throw. You would be done reading this whole page by the time the ball gets out of his hand. Ok maybe I am exagerating, but you get my point. The Giants didn't blitz as often and when they did it wasn't as effective as in the first half, and that is what a mobile QB gives you. I am sure that if Bledsoe had played, Peppers would be the sack-leader in the NFL right now. The O-line has to do so much for someone who takes that long. Remember this because the Redskins will play the Panthers and if Burnell stays as the starting QB you will see what I am talking about. Burnell is alot more mobile than Bledsoe, but he takes too long to throw. I really do hope he gets to start this Sunday, I am not saying Dallas will win for sure, but the Cowboys have a much better chance of winning with him taking the snaps. |
Re: Times Dispatch - Redskins' QB Watches Parcells Move Pay Off
If Brunell starts we lose. If we lose I throw up.
Same old Sunday. |
