Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
The Sports Junkies are about to talk to an ESPN source in reference to a rumor about Campbell possibly starting this weekend. I'm going to listen to it, but I wanted some other people to hear it too. If anyone is in a position to listen to an internet stream, go to www.donandmikewebsite.com and click on the "listen live" on the left side of the home page.
It could be crap, but it should still be an interesting listen. I'll post what I hear after they talk to the source. |
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
I have it loading now!

Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
any update on this?
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
From the sounds of it, they can't get him on the phone. They didn't say who the ESPN source is, but I have a feeling it's Chris Mortenson. Supposedly, there's been rumbling that since Brunell isn't 100% and Campbell has been taking most of the snaps since the Colts game, Campbell would be the starter Sunday, but Washington is trying to keep it quiet.
It could be complete crap since Mort likes to push rumors as fact occasionally, but there could be some truth to it. It's not too crazy to think that Gibbs would sit the possibly injured Brunell that hasn't practiced in a couple weeks, in favor of the healthy, possibly prepared Campbell. |
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
If I'm not mistaken, Brunell practiced on Wednesday and Thursday. While injured, yes Campbell has been taking more and more snaps, but I think it's a ploy. Brunell will be under center on Sunday.
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
He practiced fully yesterday and Gibbs says he, "looked great." Blah. :(
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
This is the same thing that's going on Jacksonville. Leftwich was hurt and Garrard took the snaps. Garrard is gonna be the starter this weekend and he's not anywhere near the QB Leftwich is. Brunell's been hurt, Campbell is taking the snaps. Why not start the kid?
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
I wish. But Brunell is the son Gibbs never had.
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
I thought Brunell was the daughter Gibbs never had...
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
I was going to start a thread the other day about this but in the interest of not having another QB thread I decided against it.
I've been wondering all week if there is any possibility that Campbell will start and the coaches are just keeping it under wraps to keep Campbell from getting hammered all week by the media. |
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
It's not going to happen. Collins was getting 1/2 the snaps too. Why Collins is even getting snaps is beyond me. I guess Gibbs is trying to keep Saunders happy. I'm can't wait until it's 3-9 and Brunell throws a 5 yard checkdown. The crowd is going to really let him have it this week.
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
love to see it matty, but i'm not sure if its in the cards. gibbs is loyal, and brunell is his guy. i would be shocked if anyone but 8 in under center at 1pm on sunday. Either way...i'm getting excited..its about that time where I start believing that we CAN and WILL win...(i do this each week- bearish/dejected on monday, and gradually progress to optimistic by friday). Go skins!

Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
Well, the show's over and they didn't get ahold of him, so now this rumor is basically third hand. Still, it is an interesting possibility. If it were any other coach in the league, I could see it happening, but since it's Coach Gibbs and the quarterback in question is Mark Brunell, I'm 99.9% sure there won't be a change.
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
I'd be surprised if Campbell does start, but if they were to make a change this is the way they would do it.
Campbell was getting hounded by the media by just taking a lot of snaps last week, imagine if they had announced the change during the bye? Forget about it... the pressure on him for this game would be monumental. I have my fingers crossed for Sunday. |

That really says it all, right there. It just seems like Gibbs has the biggest hard-on for Brunell than anyone ever had for anyone ever before. |
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
I have a raging clue that tells me Brunell will start
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
Gibbs has a raging clue and it's pointed right in Brunell's direction.

LOL! I think Brunell caught Gibbs cheating on his wife. But remeber Gibbs has a history of this. Remember Thiesmann's last year? He was terrible. So was Rypien during the 92 season. The only guy he gave a hook to was Jay S. And Ramsey does not count. |
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
Brunell's playing makes me lose my raging clue. :(
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
There's no way anyone but Brunell is playing in this game. It's just really not like Joe Gibbs to play Jason Campbell.
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
I hope Brunell doesn't make a mistake of throw a dump-off on 3rd and 8 early. If he does, the FedEx faithful will get restless pretty quickly.
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
I get the horrible feeling that when #8 comes out of the tunnel on Sunday the boos will start then and there.
|
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
gibbs is like that english guy on south park and brunell is like mrs garrison

Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
HAHA. How true.

I've had a raging clue for more than 4 hours ... should I consult my doctor?

your flesh rocket should have been ready for lift off hours ago... |
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
I don't see Campbell starting, but I can envision him playing if we are losing and Brunell aggravates his ribs. I know Campbell is the #3 QB, but maybe Gibbs will decide to use him after he practiced with the 1st team offense.

Considering Brunell clearly needs MUCH more practice, I hope it's not "a ploy". Brunell should be losing sleep at how poorly he's seeing the field. |

No, we don't have a coach on the site, but we've got a Sheriff. ;) |

So you think Moss / Cooley / ARE / Lloyd ALL aren't creating separation downfield? I used to be a football coach, I can tell. I know you'd like to believe otherwise, heck, we all would...but it's Brunell. |

Those stats are not the type to see the whole picture. Brunell is afraid to make mistakes, thus the OK looking numbers. With the weapons we have, our offense should be top 5 at worst. Can you name one team that has more dumps / screens than the Skins? I think through 7 games we have more dumps / screens than every skins team for the past 3 years. ps- I understand you were being sarcastic, but it's not the first time someone used that argument for real, so I was jumping the gun there. |

My nickname is "the stat man", trust me, I know numbers. Any stat man worth a salt, realizes there is more to numbers than just the numbers. Any real objective Skins fan realizes Brunell is not seeing the field. |
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
Eli manning's QB rating is lower than David Carr's, does that make carr better than manning. Carr got benched for Rosenfels. Brunell has had a pretty weak season. I think a good stat would be to check his first downs per completion.
So you think Moss / Cooley / ARE / Lloyd ALL aren't creating separation downfield?
I used to be a football coach, I can tell. I know you'd like to believe otherwise, heck, we all would...but it's Brunell.
Well, apparently they are getting seperation at times because Brunell throws for 200+ yards a game. Remember, even at the NFL level, its impossible to follow 5 guys every play. The best can follow 3 or maybe 4 play in and play out. Guys who don't see the field throw a lot of interceptions and miss a lot of throws. Brunell has done neither. Also its pretty baseless to say that a guy who has seen the field well his whole career all of a sudden isn't doing it anymore, and to not have any reasoning for it. Here's everything you need to know: If he wasn't seeing the field, Gibbs and Saunders would be looking to replace him. He hasn't been, so the problem lies elsewhere. Like on the other side of the ball. Look, no one is criticizing your credentials. I aspire to be a football coach one day. I've played. But I don't claim to be able to diagnose problems within an offense that I don't completely understand. We, as fans, don't have all the information the coaching staff has. All we are given is production numbers, or statistics. In 2004, Brunell got benched because he wasn't getting it done. In 2006, he's having his best season in the last 7 years. But the fans are frusterated because it hasn't translated into wins. That's understandable. I, at least, am happy that Gibbs feels strongly that what he is doing is correct, because, any luck willing, his patience should translate into a winning streak. According to our estimated wins stat (3.8, FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Football analysis and NFL stats for the Moneyball era - Authors of Pro Football Prospectus 2006 and 2005) We have played .500+ football even with all the defensive injuries and struggles. I'm as pissed off as the rest of you that we are 2-5. It sucks, I get it. But give some credit to Al Saunders for getting us those two wins. The only sure, solid evidence we have are statistics, and they say Brunell and the offense is doing fairly well. I don't expect these to override your observations, but just to force you (the warpath collective) to question your reasoning a tad more. I say this because my observations of Brunell's play are generally positive, but like the rest of you, he doesn't exactly inspire confidence in me. That's why we have stats, they support what I think of him, letting me know that my observations are correct. Without stats, my pro-Brunell banter would be just as baseless as the anti-Brunell banter that I combat, seemingly anytime I'm on. I would still feel strongly about it because those are what my observations tell me, but it would be baseless. Ask yourself this, are you actually pissed because our offense, which is a vast improvement over the last two seasons, has a tendency to get conservative on third down? Or are you pissed because the team is 2-5, like I am? |
Re: Sports Junkies talking about a Campbell rumor
i agree with the brunell ain't getting it done dept... maybe it's all on the coaches, but unless they give another QB to compare apples to apples with, we can't be sure.
the offense is hurting the defense gtripp, even parcells has said that. I know you love brunell, but you keep throwing up stats that were mainly made in garbage time after the game was already lost as though they mattered. I mean, i know you love stats, but do you actually see all those 5 yard dump offs when we need 10 yards? do you see him refusing to ever throw over the middle? do you see him NEVER going deep? there's a reason he's not throwing interceptions, and it's cause he seemed to be more concerned with finding a backup job for next year than trying to win.
are you actually pissed because our offense, which is a vast improvement over the last two seasons...
what f'ing planet are you living on? |
