More New Stadium Rumors
I guess I've become the point guy on this issue but on my way to work this morning I was listening to Elliot In the Morning. Apparently I think he was talking to an anonymous Redskin employee (not sure, I joined in late), who was telling him that plans are in the works to tear down RFK and build a retractable dome stadium with grass for the SKINs like in Houston. Snyder wants the SKINs back in D.C. and wants a SB here.
This may just be fluff but I find it weird that this is the second time this last year that I have heard rumors to this effect but I have not seen one written story on the subject. I would think that seeing this parking fiasco with the baseball stadium and the kooks on the council (mainly Catania) would make anyone want to not even consider the thought but the rumors keep apprearing here and there. Anyone heard any additional rumors on the subject? |
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
Where are you hearing the rumors from other than EITM?
|
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
One of the "sources" that called in EITM mentioned that the stadium would be doen by about 2011, and that the NFL would grant DC 4 Super Bowls over the next 16 years (I think). I don't know how true that would be, but it's interesting.
If Snyder was paying for this out of his own pocket I doubt he'd have as many problems as the MLB has had with the city. |
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
i know a guy that works for fox, and said with the current stadium, there is no way to a super bowl being played at fed ex. something about the sight lines and camera stands. the minimum is like 32 and fed ex only has like 18. but i am against a dome
|
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
To me that would be a great move. RFK II, niiiiiiiice!

I'd also be against a dome for the most part. I think the weather is something that you have to deal with in football and I would hate to watch a game inside. But, if it were a retractable roof that was usually kept open I'd be okay with it, I guess. |
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
I really wouldn't be surprised at all if Snyder pulls this off. He desperately wants a Super Bowl in DC and that's just not gonna happen unless we have a dome.
|
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
Other than Elliot In the Morning, I've just heard it referenced as rumor in one Washington Post article back in the spring of 06 and from what I remember verbally mentioned as a rumor on a radio like a year ago.
Like I've said I've heard nothing substantial just rumors, in fact the radio show this morning is actually the longest I've heard it discussed. I guess we'll maybe hear more as the countdown to the end of RFK nears. |
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
I'd imagine that the retractable roof concept would be mainly for the Super Bowl. I couldn't imagine the roof being closed unless it benefitted the Skins...
|
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
I just can't see is taking place. Stadiums aren't exactly cheap.
|
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
Snyder isn't exactly poor either...
|
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
i dont want a dome i hate domes, fed ex is already an amazing stadium and isnt old at all. dont do this danny
|
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
part of me says, with FedEx why do this? But if Danny could recreate a similar atmosphere that was in RFK, and add an retractable roof that wouldn't be used except for a Super Bowl, they why not?

The problem is, while the Redskins are worth over a billion, Snyders liquid assets aren't at that level yet. If he were to pay for the entire project with his own money, it'd probably cost him close to half of his fortune. He wouldn't sacrifice that much of his fortune unless he was 100% sure he could make it back. If he was promised four superbowls, that'd make most of his money back for him, but I don't see it happening otherwise. |
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
It better have 92,000 seats because I am not giving up my tickets!
|
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
The fiscal aspect of this is mind boggling. What the heck would he do with FedEx? I mean the thing isn't old at all. I don't think a major sport stadium has ever been rendered useless after only like 10 years. I'd love a stadium back in DC but I just don't see how the money works on it. I guess Matty's right though. If anyone can pull it off it would be Danny Boy. I also think the Skins would have an easier time than MLB. This is the Skins we're talking about here.

Re: More New Stadium Rumors
4 of the next 16 SBs, plus more down the road...i'd say he'd be able to make his money back.
I'm willing to bet the monstrosity would hold 100,000 easily. With no obstructed view seating... |

I think there is probably a bank or two that would work out a loan for him... If he wants to do it, he will. I just don't see it happening. The district can't afford a stadium and what is Snyder going to do Fed Ex? Just eat it? |

And you're serious huh?? Do you honestly think he would have trouble getting the money for this? |

It also helps the Olympics bid for the D.C./Baltimore area. I see Snyder drooling all over this one... If it makes money, then Snyder will do it. |
If it makes money, then Snyder will do it.
That's the question, will it make money? Anyone got the figures on what FedEx cost to build? |
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
AS for FedEx, on the radio this morning they implied that it would be torn down and all that land (and there is a ton of it) would be used for office buildings and that sort of thing. I'm sure Sndyer could sell that land off for a ton, or he coudl keep it and just rent it off.
Remember, FedEx was built before Snyder's time, so he probably couldn't care less about it. He has to want something more personal to him because he's got a bigger ego than Matty (barely). |
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
And you'd THINK they might actually want the stadium IN DC.

Anyone got the figures on what FedEx cost to build?
$250.5 million according to Wikipedia FedExField - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

I think people are overestimating Snyder's "throw money at it" mentality. While I do think he could get the money, no one, especially someone with the business mind that Snyder has, would just sign a 300-500 million dollar check without knowing he could make all of it back in a reasonable amount of time. |
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
that would be cool but fedex is really new for how old it is.
who whos with dan snyder at the helm |
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
$250.5 million according to Wikipedia
FedExField - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I think we can safely assume it would cost north of $400 mil to build a stadium in DC. It is costing more than that to build what I would assume is a smaller baseball stadium so $500 isn't out of the question at all. He'd have to unload FedEx which could be hard since it would become largely worthless without Skins and another huge stadium on the way. So you'd have to assume the stadium would end up going bye-bye and the land subdivided. That would probably bring a pretty penny considering the size. Probably enough to unload his debt on it. He certainly could get the money to build a new stadium though. I would think he'd try for city help but could pull it off on his own. |

Re: More New Stadium Rumors
that would be great, maybe they could have it up and running by the time superbowl 50 rolls around.it has to be a dome/retractable stadium though.do
the redskins own fed ex field? |

Re: More New Stadium Rumors
it'd be nice, but i hope he's paying for it and not tax payers. the roof is retractable, but you need a dome for superbowls in cold weather :/.
hopefully he doesn't have all the lounges (open DURING games) and other craptacular issues that have been created in FedEx. |

Snyder could put an ad in the paper, hold an open house, he'll have it sold by lunchtime!!!
How old is FedEx? The jets wanted a stadium on the West Side of Manhattan that never happened. I am unfamiliar with the local politics of DC, but I can't imagine this would be an easy thing to get done. |

You mean the town that voted Barry to be Mayor after he served time for smoking crack on T.V.? Let me tell you all that you need to know. The D.C. city council makes a deal with MLB and says, "We will build you a stadium!" So the team comes here. The council says, "Oh, that is way too expensive. MLB must pay more!" So this goes back and forth for months. Well, all of a sudden, hurricane Katrina comes along and demolishes a city or two. Well that didn't exactly help the prices for building supplies. The council and MLB strike a deal and the council toots their own horn about how they took on Baseball and won. What they neglected to address was they actually ended up paying more than the original amount because they didn't lock in the contract before all of the materials went through the roof. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you a snapshot into the "local politics" of D.C. It would be funny to watch them in the middle another fiascoe, though. |
Re: More New Stadium Rumors
21 is right, the DC council is what drove cooke to landover in the first place (and he was willing to pay the ENTIRE cost of the damn thing).

I'll tell you what though if Barry had still been mayor when the deal went down there'd be a stadium in DC. He was at all the games, had a great relationship with JKC but Sharon Pratt Kelly Dixon screwed that up when she took the mayorship |

F--king broads. Should have never given them the right to vote. They f--k up everything!
