Does Campbell end the 'Cover 2' excuse?
For weeks we've been hearing MB and Gibbs repeatedly say they can't go deep because opposing defenses have played cover 2 or a 2 deep safety shell so the dump offs were 'taking what was available'. Everyone knows the way to beat a cover 2 is throwing to the deep middle or corner routes, 2 routes Brunell didn't have the arm strength or confidence to throw. With JC taking the reins should we see more of those throws against that coverage?
|
Re: Does Campbell end the 'Cover 2' excuse?
Sure we'll see more throws against coverage, and we'll see a lot more interceptions too.

THAT, sir...is the plan. can you tell i'm happy? :oink: i'm sure Moss, Lloyd, ARE and Cooley are too. prolly not Betts tho. |
Re: Does Campbell end the 'Cover 2' excuse?
Yeah, it seems like the Redskins are the only team in the NFL who's offense is completely ineffective when the opponent is in a Cover 2.

What happened to "Go Skins!!" and the positive spin? |

Because REALITY is that now that MB is benched we have NO shot at the playoffs. This is all going to be about getting JC ready for next year, and I understand that. But it still blows for this year. |
Re: Does Campbell end the 'Cover 2' excuse?
it looks like hess is more of a brunell fan than a skins fan...

I hate to sound blindly optimistic, but look at the nfc, the division schedule & we have a chance. granted, it will take winning 6 of 7 at least, but its still a chance. the D has started to gell, since that stallworth td, & just maybe JC is good enough to get the O to score 17 - 20 a game. Other teams are flailing too in the nfc. We're only 3 games out of 1st & 2 back from the cowpokes, who also happen to be 1-3 in the div. What if we win 2 in a row, are 5-6 (sound familiar?) and the div. leader is 6-5? Is it still over? |
Re: Does Campbell end the 'Cover 2' excuse?
oh, and yes, the middle of the field is now an option. Look for ARE to get some quick catches over the middle, something we haven't seen from him all year cause MB couldn't get it to him.

MB didnt' throw it to him because he was in coverage. JC will throw it, and we'll see more interceptions during the next 6 weeks than we have all year. He'll learn from that experience, I'm sure. |

Is it because Brunell is benched or because CAMPBELL is starting? Honestly, this is the PERFECT time to put in Campbell. On the road, against a traditionally tame stadium, against a struggling team, is as favorable an environment you could ask for. If he plays well and gets his NFL legs under him, he returns home for a three game homestand in which the Redskins (still mathematically alive) will prove to us if they're up for another miracle finish or not. |

Traditinoally tame stadium??? Have you ever been there? Dude, it is NOT tame. That place is serious! |

All I'm saying is that I do think giving JC a chance is a good idea so that he can gain experience, but I'm upset that we had to make that choice. Playoffs, Superbowl... gone... :( |

We'll probably see more picks, but we'll also see more touchdowns. Quarterback is a position that you can't afford to "play safe" when your defense can't stop anybody. And if you really think that Brunell was the only chance at the playoffs, then that chance was absolute zero. Do you honestly believe Campbell couldn't have led the offense to THREE points last week? |

Anyone that has been watching this team without the homer glasses knew that the chances for a Superbowl were gone six weeks ago. |

I heard the same thing hess, my cousin is a diehard Tampa fan. I was happy for him when they won the Super Bowl because they had sucked for so long, how did he become a Tampa fan ? Anyway, he and some other guys we know who are Skins fans went to the playoff game and they said it was loud as hell in there. My co-worker sat in the section where the pirate ship is is wild too! HA PIRATE SHIP !!!!! Anyway, I think Campbell will have a good game howver I am ready for him to stink up the joint. Joint......that's a good idea ! LATER ! |

Brunell didn't throw it because he couldn't see over the middle of the field. Why do u think he led the league in completions outside the numbers last year? It's always something, either its the pass protection, lack of a consistent running game, or the receivers not getting open. It's the NFL, receivers only run wide open on us, otherwise you have to get the ball into a window. And we'll see more touchdown passes during the next 6 weeks than we have all year as well. And 3rd down conversions. The Cover 2 is another excuse, the Skins play a lot of cover 2 and most of the big plays against us have been when we were in that coverage. If we get some big plays, the myth is busted. |

[He Whom Shall Not Be Named] was the real guarantee we wouldn't make the playoffs Hess. he could manage a team with an excellent defense but that was just completely not the case this year, and he just did NOT have what it takes to do any more than that. Campbell will throw picks sure, but i'm also confident he can score at ANY time. imagine throwing a bomb on the RUN. on a blitz, instead of throwing it away, or to Betts, he'll throw downfield past the safeties. yeah, young QBs can do that. all the receivers are REALLY going to try and get separation now, because they know Campbell has the arm to really get it to them. even out of the pocket. the whole character of this team has changed. watch and see. |
Re: Does Campbell end the 'Cover 2' excuse?
just give him a little time and he can wing it. brunells passes all looked like they took years to get there.
|
Re: Does Campbell end the 'Cover 2' excuse?
If anything, Campbell has more pressure to perform well, in front of a home field Hess. Putting him on the road, in a situation when the season is over, pretty much means no pressure at all.
No one is asking him to win out, bc it is impossible, so there is no pressure at all. lol, and cannons and flags arent gonna distract a qb, if anything it would be crowd noise . Plus do you have any idea how loud, college football stadiums get? They can hold more than FedEX, and the enviroment is as bad. Only thing Campbell needs to worry about is game speed. |

This is the best time to bring Campbell in, PERIOD. |
Re: Does Campbell end the 'Cover 2' excuse?
as was mentioned earlier. if he stinks it up, he wont have to worry about home fans booing him. he can get a game in before he comes back to fedex and worry about performing for the home team guys.

This is the one move we could make that gives us just a little bit of hope to go 7 and 0. Very unlikely, but now at least in the rest of our games the cover 2 won't mean an automatic loss. The safties on the other team can't smoke weed at halftime anymore and now we get to see if Saunders system can work around here. |
