Redskins could come home to RFK

WASHINGTON -- There's been some talk around town of a plan to bring the Redskins back to RFK Stadium. Officials said the plans are not specific, but the vision is of a new stadium with a dome. "People love the Redskins. I think people would love to have the Redskins back in the District. The accessibility of the RFK site versus FedEx Field is unquestioned," said D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans. What do you guys think? IMO I think it would be great to have them back in DC where they belong. Not to mention the shitty commute/location and parking at FedEx. One thing we can't deny is that Snyder has the money to do it, and knowing him and his marketing ability, he would probably do this......... Mods please move the article to the newswire. |
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
That would be the hottest thing EVER. I never got a chance to go when I was younger.

My first game was at RFK against the Lions (when Barry Sanders was there) and I swear I'll never forget how the stands would rock and move when we jumped on them. It was really amazing. People think FedEx is noisy......it was ten times noiser in RFK. It was an awesome experience. Also, from what I've heard from older friends and co-workers is that the tailgating experience was ten times better than FedEx. It was more of a family atmosphere..... |
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
The city better be prepared to PAY. I've been to the old RFK. It's where the phrase "Rock the house" originated
|
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
We talked about this pretty recently.
I wouldn't be at all suprised to see it happen. Snyder desperately wants a Super Bowl in DC, and the only way to make it happen would be to build a dome. |
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
Yeah, we wouldnt have to worry about public funds like the nat's did, since snyder has so much private money. I'd love a smaller, more well designed stadium, I hope we don't get a dome though, Grass is crucial, and so is homefield advantage. I think manning woulda won a superbowl by now if they didnt play in a dome.

I would think that the dome would retractable with natural grass......at least I hope it would be... |
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
I hate the dallas stadium cause of those shadows, would we be able to avoid that??????
|
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
I'm sure Dan has looked at the feasibility of a FieldTurf, retractable dome conversion of Fed Ex Field.
Isn't RFK run down by modern stadium standards? |

I think that would be the plan. The only reason for the roof would be for hosting a Super Bowl, other than that I think they would keep it open. |
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
I hope they consider acoustics like the Seattle stadium. I want it to be completely INSANE for opposing teams.

Isn't RFK run down by modern stadium standards?
Well apparently the plan is to build a new one on the same site where RFK is, so it would just be a new "RFK" stadium. RFK is nowhere near modern stadium standards. Just the seats alone are uncomfortable. If you weigh over 200lbs, you'll be uncomfortable sitting down in RFK. |

It has the shadows because of it's toilet like shape, not because because it's a retractable dome (which it isn't). |
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
And it has the players that go along with the whole toilet theme. I like to think of them as little pieces of shit running around.
|
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
I think Dan is going to have to have a hell of a deal to do it. Like all the revenue. I doubt the city is going to be on board with that plan. I will be interesting to watch.

Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
Jerry Jones is the piece of corn.
|
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
dallas' roof isnt retractable??? I think it is, or was at some point.
|
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
We have a contract with FedEx... so they won't be moving.

I'm sure they could work something out. |

The article stated Dan was traveling, he's traveling to Tom and Katie's wedding in Italy.

Maybe for a Nats game. The seats there are big, wide & very roomy. Try getting that at Camden, M&T Bank or any of these modern stadiums. RFK is no gem and it has its share of problems but the seats are not one of them. I can't imagine Danny not wanting some kind of sweetheart deal from the city like the Nats got. I doubt that because he has lot of $ he will forget trying to get everything out of the city that he can (I dont blame him for that). |

I thought Dan purchased the stadium when he purchased the team. Now they do have a contract with FedEx which purchased the stadium name rights for so many years. So if they did build a new stadium it would probably still be called FedEx field until the contract runs out. Then they would renew the deal or find another Co. to purchase the rights. I don't think that RFK would ever be the name even if they did move the field. Another person mention the traffic at FedEx but that seats like 35,000 more people as would the new stadium so the traffic issues would still be a problem. Unless the old site was that much better but anytime your trying to move 95,000 people traffic will always be an issue. |

The reason why RFK is a much easier commute is because the metro is walking distance from the stadium. FedEx has a metro station near the stadium, but its like a mile and a half away from it. You know the Danny would probably make the stadium the same size, but the design would be more fan friendly (no more obstructed veiws) and with the metro access, that would ease the traffic a little. |
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
I find it unlikely. They are generating piles of cash with the current stadium. To build a new retractable roof-state of the art facility would require taking on massive new debt (like 800 million or so) or public financing which would mean a battle with D.C City Council and the voters there and having to share revenue and possibly no ownership. Mr. Cooke offered those dumbasses an amazing deal and thet were too stupid to take it. As was Alexandria. There punishment should be to never have the Redskins again.
I think the old RFK stadium should dismantled and rebuilt on route 234 here in Manassas and they should play there. But that's just me. |

If you saw my inital post you would've seen that I have been to RFK for a skins game. And I've been to numerous Nationals and DC United games. I think the seat are uncomfortable, but thats just my opinion. |
I'm sure they could work something out.
Especially considering the founder and CEO of FedEx is a minority owner of the Redskins. |
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
It would be a great idea back in the city. It would probably be like the Cardinals stadium where the grass is rolled into the dome.
|
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
If a new stadium was built the contract for the naming rights with FedEx would be void on the current stadium I am sure. These naming rights contracts all run at least 20 years and most of the stadiums were already old enough that in 20 years they wont be open so I am sure the contracts aren't binding if the team moves.
The rights for the new stadium would then be put up for bid I would imagine. |
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
Btw, Congratulations on 3000 Post!!
|
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
I wish the new stadium could be smaller, way too many seats in FED EX, the eagles and ravens seat in the 60's i believe, that's more reasonable.

Less seats equals less people who can go. I am dubious they would build one smaller. Then they'd have to rescind season tickets for thousands. Bad news there. |

I think the seat are uncomfortable, but thats just my opinion.
I went to an army/navy game at M&T Bank stadium in Balt and sat in the front row of the upper deck, there was literally 5 inches between the end of the seat bottom and the wall. Talk about uncomfortable. |

Exactly, it was supposed to be a dome (fixed roof) but it was there was bad planning and the weight of the roof couldn't be safely supported, plus they ran out of money and for some reason, people liked having a hole in the roof with supports showing. Then again, it's the same people who now cheer Terrell Owens, so it shouldn't surprise me. They're ripping the toilet down soon anyways, the 'Girls are getting a new home in 2008. |

Ticket prices would go up. They still want to make money. Less tickets would mean they need more profit for each ticket. |

Side note:
Did anyone else hear on Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio this morning when Mark Schlareth and Mike Golic were talking about NFL rivalries? Schlareth hates the Raiders and their "arrogant fans" and Golic said he HATED Dallas the most, but the Redskins' fans were the best he'd seen. He said even though the Eagles and Redskins always had a heated rivalry, the fans at RFK were always the most courteous and respectful in the league. :goodjob: Hey...we're NOTHING like Philly fans for sure. |

Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
where the hell would all the seat go...90+ tickets now...say they expand RFK to 70...still short 20+
who loses? |
Re: Redskins could come home to RFK
RFK was a great place to see the Redskins in its day. I can still picture the stands shaking with the old D.C lotto clock in the corner. I went to the last game against the Cowboys and it was a great experience that I will never forget. I wouldn’t mind if they could really fix the place and the Skins moved back. But the whole idea of a dome really scares me. I saw the Skins play inside a dome last year in St. Louis and it SUCKS! I would be so bummed to see the Redskins have there stadium covered. To me its really not good football when it’s 30 degrees outside (witch I think is perfect football weather )and you go into a heated building to play. I’m all for moving back to the District. But keep at least 80 thousand seats and what ever happens no domes please. Screw the S.B. One S.B would not even make it worth watching the Redskins play there home games inside.

I was there at that game as my first Skins game. A friend and I were offered free tix at the last minute. One of my all time best skins memories. RFK was amazing. Yeah, football in dc is supposed to be played outdoors. Only if they promised not to close the roof w/ the exception of a SB. |
