Gibbs looks angry during press conference
I haven't seen him look so pissed in a long time. He was saying that the team wasn't living up to Redskins football principles, i.e. not running effectively and allowing the other team to run on us. I think this will be the beginning of more changes. I think that he's been taking a back seat, allowing Saunders to run the offense, following bad advice from the front office about free agents. I am hoping that this is the beginning of more accountability from our players and coaches.

Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
Yup, he was definately steamed. The defense was dreadful and we couldn't run the ball - those are the two key elements of any team, particularly one coached by Gibbs.
|
Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
I said it in another thread, I think he was calling out Saunders and GW a bit today. Anyone else get that feeling?

I noticed he was really pissed about the defense, but I didn't notice him mentioning the playcalling on offense. I might have missed it though. |
Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
He was mad he didnt have an excuse to put Mark brunell back in.
Ah, I love starting a fire! |

I agee 100% you could hear the tone of his voice change when he talked about the defense. |
Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
It's almost like he was saying "Ok Al, I made the change at QB you've got your guy now." Now he's turning his attention to Williams and saying "so what the hell is your issue?"

No he didn't mention it specifically, but he kept referring to the principles of Redskins football... running the ball and stopping the run. |
Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
I for one am glad to see him show some anger. He didn't stand by his old b.s. rhetoric, "fighting guts out", etc. It was refreshing. Now that he doesn't have to defend Brunell, I think he's freed up to be more honest about the team.

Well, let's see... --Thinking that Cornelius Griffin can anchor the line and stop the run all by himself for the third straight year without missing a beat? --Relying on Joe Salave'a, a guy who was out of football for more than a year, who's had a history of injuries, who was probably best suited as rotation at best, but is now a full time defensive tackle? --Keeping rejects and castoffs like Renaldo Wynn and Philip Daniels around because they're such great leaders? --Hoping that 6th and 7th round picks like Cedric Golston and Montegomery can fill in and stuff the run when this front office hasn't had any success at drafting anybody who's been worth a damn in the 6th and 7th round? How's that for starters? And I didn't even mention Arch, Rogers, Holdman, McIntosh and Andre Carter! |

I'm happy about it too. Don't get me wrong, I love how loyal Gibbs is to his players, but I'm hoping his anger will light a fire under some asses. I just hope he doesn't get so frustrated that he entertains thoughts of retirement. |
Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
It is funny how some of you guys can't get passed this thing with Joe Gibbs and Mark Brunell, but you can completely ignore the fact that the real reasons why we're losing games are the defense and the inconsistent playcalling from Al Saunders. I'll admit, I was very excited to see Al Saunders coming here, but this team wins with Joe Gibbs football, and they're not playing Joe Gibbs football.
A side note...I think Jason Campbell played more than well enough to have won us a ball game, but he has completely NO HELP from anybody else with the exception of Loyd, ARE, and Cooley. |
Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
GW has always said his first priority is to stop the run, but we can't do that for some reason. I think the problem with the defense is that very few of those guys are hungry. We need a couple of UFA's to balance it out and get the energy up.
Gibbs should be pissed, most of those runs were straight ahead and those are "manhood" issues. I mean the Bucs had no running game for most of the year and they run on us like that? And with no running game we had to rely on Campbell a lot more, and he still produced. |
Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
NO HELP from anybody else with the exception of Loyd, ARE, and Cooley.
Cooley, Ok. But Lloyd and ARE both dropped passes that would have been first downs. Lloyd's was especially costly. |
Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
There was one pass thrown to Loyd that he caught and would have came down in bounce, however he was forced out and the refs called it an incomplete pass. I'm talking about the inconsistent running game and playcalling. It's almost as if they're just drawing plays out of a hat. I think we should've kept with Joe Gibbs offense from a year ago and just added the receivers.

Yup! I heard it that way, too. He was calling out the coaches. I think he was challenging Saunders more. I mean, come on; 20 rushing attempts (5 by the QB) in a close game. That's not running the ball. You don't control the game clock when your pass:run ratio is 34:20. Could say the same about the defense, but stopping the run is not a new issue. Letting a team you could/should have beat run for 181 yards and control the clock for 36 minutes is "not the principles we abide by." |

Wasn't it Joe Gibbs who wanted Al Saunders in here? Plays often look like they've been "drawn out of a hat" when the players who run them don't execute. |

Gibbs brought these players in here , and he brought in Saunders . Gibbs is they guy willing to trade draft picks like they are worthless . And he keeps talking about character ,, Moss and Taylor have committed about a dozen personal fouls this year . If character is so important , why do we keep going the the " U " for talent ? Moss , ya he is really tough sitting out again , he could have run some plays to help JC . JC looked good , now we need some help on the OL , DL , LB and DB's . |

Randle El had one catch for 14 yards. He started today right? Was he #2 or #3 behind Thrash and Lloyd? Maybe it was inexperience at QB combined with a good pass defense? At what point do we start raising some eyebrows at Randle El's production as a wideout? |

Yes he was mad and it's about time. He should be mad getting becasue there is no way TB should run the ball for almost 200 yards. But the main problem is we just don't have the horses and throwing away the picks has really hurt the depth. So Gibbs has no one to blame but himself. |

What they need from him is to do his punt return thing and then provide one or two explosive plays on offense per game. Those may be runs, passes, or catches. I don't see him ever breaking out for 10 catches and 200 yards in a game. If he were capable of that, he would have done it in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are not a club that allows any talent to go to waste. If he had potential as a great WR, Cowher would have dragged it out of him. Instead he ended up in the role that he did which will end up being the same role he plays for us. That's why Lloyd was also signed. He is the more traditional WR compliment to Moss. |

If that is the case then he is being paid too much for what he is doing. That money he is making sure could be spent elsewhere. |

I guess I'm the only one who didn't see a whole lot of anger with Gibbs.

Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
They tried some trickery with Cooley throwing to El. I prefer it when it's the other way around.

Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
He should be angry. We went from contender last year to arguably worst team in the league under his watch.

I like Randle El, I wanted Randle El, thought he'd look good in Burgundy, and I still do. Just understand that as a wide receiver, there's nothing special about him. What's special about him is that he CAN hold his own at WR, while doing so much more for this team. |

I sensed it. I think Williams may be really close to the Hot Seat.... I wonder if the D keeps playing like it is where Williams will end up. I also wonder if Williams isn't pissed because of Saunders coming in and challenging him to be the predecessor here, because it looks like our D is CONSTANTLY out of position. You couldn't do that shit on purpose. You guys still want him to be our next Head Coach? |

My question is this: if Al thought that his plays would work if they could protect Brunell, why not call them? If the line misses a block, it's not Al's fault.
Now that he has the more mobile Campbell, there's less excuses to hide behind, but he should have done a better job with Brunell. |
Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
Look at his career stats. What did you expect from the guy, a 1000 yard season?
Well, his career stats as the #3 receiver behind Hines Ward and Plaxico Burress on a team committed to the run like the Steelers were bound to be diminished. Maybe I was hoping the front office saw something in his athletic ability that I didn't ? For the money that was thrown at him, I guess I expected better than one catch for 14 yards when our best wideout was injured. I mean James Thrash did better than that, for crying out loud. |

But after we already brought in Lloyd, why not go spend the money on a lineman or something more useful? Come to think of it, why DID we give a 3rd and 4th for Lloyd, if we were planning to outbid for Randle El. |

I mean Gibbs and Saunders have a bit of a history together having coached at the same time in college, and both being disciples of Coryell. And you ever notice how Gibbs always talks about smart Saunders is and how he's got such a great work ethic and he's putting in the hours to get the ship righted? I can't remember the last time he really spoke about GW in any such way. |

Gibbs is hard to read he's definitely not a "crown their asses" kind of coach, but he certainly sounded more emotional than usual. |
Re: Gibbs looks angry during press conference
When I watch Carlos Rogers try to cover, I think that Williams deserves to be in the HoF for holding Tampa to 20 points today. He really is having to compensate for his secondary. When we get in Goalline where he can commit to stopping the run, they look like the last two years Redskins. Between the twenties where he has to worry about big plays, they get gashed. I think he is being forced to play conservative because Springs is the only guy that can cover and he's not 100 percent. Ditto Taylor. He looked like he had the flu or something today. I don't believe that the D-Line is the culprit. Otherwise they wouldn't be capable of goalline stands like they are. I think it's injuries, shoddy play at 2 or 3 critical positions, and scheme.
