Smoot takes a backseat...

Not permanent yet, but looking that way.

Re: Smoot takes a backseat...

ProFootballTalk said the reason was that he isn't physical enough. Strange. Tafkas won't like that. They also have some interesting stuff about Mike Irvin's comments to Dan Patrick.

That's why I don't get it when people repeatedly insist on this board that we should have kept him (along with Pierce and Clark, who we really should have kept). Smoot has completely flopped in Minnesota. Still I wish him well, he was always one of my favorite Redskins.

"He doesn't look like he's that type of an athlete. But he is. He is, man. I don't know . . . some brother down in that line somewhere. . . . I don't know who saw what or where, his great-great-great-great-grandma ran over in the 'hood or something went down."
Recognizing the idiocy of Irvin's comments, Dan Patrick said, "Oh, that's the only way he can be a great athlete?"
"That's not the only way, but it's certainly one way," Irvin said. "If great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandma pulled one of them studs up out of the barn [and said], 'Come on in here for a second,' you know, and they go out and work in the yard. You know, back in the day."

What does Minnesota have to do with how he played here? I would take him back in a second.

I like a coaching staff that isn't afraid to bench a player. I think that was one thing lacking from our team this year, the players probably had little fear of getting benched.

I think Fred Smoot is a decent player (no better than a #2 CB really) and says some crazy funny stuff, aka smootsmack. But I don't think we're really hurting that much without him. He only appears to be a football God because we let him go. And glorifying ex-Redskins is often the hip thing to do. Why there hasn't been a clamoring for Matt Bowen yet I really don't know

Smoot and Springs formed a very good CB tandem. Smoot was a Redskin. he played hard, full speed and even played with a badly bruised sternum. I think that was one of the worst moves letting him go. He loved the fans, and the organization. I think there are so many distractions (whether he created them or not) in Minnesota that its taking away from his on field ability. I liked smoot, wish we still had him.

He's being benched for the same reason we let him walk. He's just not a physical enough corner.

I learned long ago to only pay attention to Irvin on the Football field.

Now that he is retired he is all but invisible to me.

I hate the line of reasoning he takes. It is followed by ' well just look at all the players in the L? what color are they?'

Well what color are most of the Professors at MIT? What color are most of the scientists at DARPA? Does that mean that we are stupid?

I am a black man and I hate the Irvin Bojangling act.

Oh we're hurting. What else would you call having the worst defense in the NFC. I doubt Smoot's departure is the only reason but it's part of a cumulative problem with undervaluing our personell.

We weren't hurting when he wasn't with us last season.

I was about to say the same thing. I thought he was adaquate as a cover guy, but he had a little Dieon in him when it came to tackling. GW tried to get him to be physical, and put that shoulder in there, each time he tried he hurt himself. Not a real tough guy in my opinion, he could really talk though.

I was keeping it low key because I thought we weren't suppossed to talk about it. Notice I buried it in the Smoot thread. There seems to be a gag order in effect.

I think that rather than hoping this blows over, ESPN should take this opportunity to encourage Irvin to get some help. It seems rather obvious to me that Irvin has a problem. If they cared about him, they would either make him go to rehab or fire him.

Fair point. I guess what I'm trying to say is his departure is symptomatic of something bigger - i.e the fact that the importance of chemistry and role players is sorely overlooked in this organization.

By the way, where in Connecticut are you from? I was born in Stamford and grew up in Weston. I'm kicking it in Venice beach now though.

He sure knocked the shit out of one of our guys when they embarrased us to start this miserable year.
