Campbell looks GREAT!
I'm impressed. He seems to still have the poise he had at Auburn. Two times today I thougt he was going to take off and run, and I still think he should have. The ref's screwed us today and yet we still won :)
However, Saunders play calling has been garbage. Saunders over this season has called conservative run(s) call on third and long. He's even called it when we are in good punt position if we do not get the first down. Today Saunders calls a slant in route to Moss that is 4 yards short of a very important first down??? Moss got slammed as soon as he caught the ball. I've yet to see even decent play calling out of this "700 page play book." Sorry, but I do not like the guy or what he's brought with him. Hail 44 |
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
He did miss some throws today, but I think that's to be expected for a young guy just getting his feet wet. He hasn't had much work with the first teamers so that chemistry level isn't there yet.
I really love his poise, that's something you just can't teach. I think his future is really bright. As far as the play calling today I think that was exactly what Gibbs wanted, a back to basics approach. Hard nosed defense, a strong running game, and it ended with a win. Hard to argue with that formula. That's Redskins football. |
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
The one that kills me is the one to Lloyd on the cross. I think that was the first time he's seen a receiver running clear like that since college and he got too excited.
The most encouraging thing for me is that he seems to have great field vision. He knows where guys are and where they are going. If his timing and accuracy (which he demonstrated on the Cooley pass) become more consistent he will win many games for us. In fact, he has the potential to join a very elite group of Redskins Qbs. I would say that club has six members at the most. A couple of them are in the HoF. Now I have to name them: 1. Sammy Baugh (HoF) 2. Sonny Jurgensen(HoF) 3. Bill Kilmer (His record as a starter was like 51 -26 or so) 4. Joe Theismann (SB) 5. Doug Williams (SB) 6. Mark Rypien (SB) They are listed in chronological order, but I think you could argue that they are in order of greatness as well. Maybe Kilmer and Theismann switch places. |
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
can you imagine the press today with a quarterback like kilmer? boozing all night, and throwing wounded ducks all game
|
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
He looks like an NFL QB. That's all we can ask for at this point.
|
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
I like the rocket luancher he has attached to his arm
|
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
i wish his shorter passes were more accurate :/ that was a problem for him in college too to some extent. it'd be nice to get it fixed though.
so far, so good. |
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
That TD pass to ARE was nuts. He pretty much had to twist his body backwards in order to get around the receiver.
I'm starting to get pretty excited about Campbell now. Good times ahead. |

Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
You have to be impressed with his passing ability inside the 5. The last two weeks he has 3 TD throws down near the goal line. I think that's where his height really helps him out.
|
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
I didnt think JC played very well yesterday but he didnt get rattled and ended up finding a way to win without his best stuff. Thats a good sign.
|
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
I'm cautiously optimistic about Campbell. He's looked pretty impressive at times. But, at other times he's not been as accurate as I expected him to be. I'm quite pleased, but not thrilled.
|
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
His accuracy needs to improve for him to develop into an elite quarterback, but I'm very impressed with his poise and timing. I saw some post game analysis on ESPN that pointed out how Campbell trusted his protection on blitzes, and how important that is for him to be able to make clutch throws. And his ability to hit a receiver in stride is very important because it gives the receiver a better chance to make a play after the catch, like the Cooley TD.
|
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
I think his accuracy will improve once he establishes more chemistry with his WRs and as he gains more experience in the offense in general.

Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
I love the fact he called the last play without getting it from the sidelines. Apparently some guys in the huddle knew and some didn't (In Cooley's post game interview he was genuinely surprised when he found out that JC's earpiece had cut out and JC just pulled a play based on the package sent in).
Didn't waste a timeout, didn't panic, just read the play and made it work.(The play was designed for the first read to be the outside receivers, THEN Cooley). Very impressive. Good pocket presence, made a nice little scramble, missed some throws. Overall, not much drop-off from Brunell and much much more room for growth. |

Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
Wow!! I really like this guy. He plays with such (cliche) Poise. He never really seems to get rattled, one thing I remember from OTAS and mini camp was hoe calm he is, I think it is something we can all see now. I know he's young and it was his second start but this guy does not look like a bust to me.
One more thing I also think this home stand is great for him. It should help his coinfedence and his timing. Hail to the SKINS!!! |
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
The game plan was simplifyed for him in this game because they wanted to get back to running the football with success, and for the most part they accomplished that. They didn't want him throwing the ball all over the place and getting in trouble with Carolina's defense. They ran the ball, controlled the tempo, and stopped the run on defense. The one INT he did throw, he was trying to give Moss an opportunity to make a play.

Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
Cooley catches 89 of Campbell's 118 yards passing. Yet Cooley is a distracted non-Redskin and Campbell is a hero. Go figure. I think Phx has seen way too much Cardinals football.

Look. You and I both know the reason they won is that we didn't watch the game together ;) |
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
Never again. At least not until they're officially eliminated.

Now we just get QBs who flip the dirty bird to his OWN fans. :D |
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
FWIW I think Campbell has looked pretty good all things considered. Yesterday he had some drops that would have helped his #'s a little. Also, we ran the ball alot too. He missed a few things but i'm not overly concerned about that.
I think what I wanted to see was some flashes that we have a QB here. A couple of examples... First play at TB-perfect throw Play at TB which he avoided the sack and threw a perfect ball to JT 2 td's at Tb- both were pretty impressive Throw to Cooley that was dropped TD to ARE and Cooley, nice throws He seems to have good pocket presence and i'm pretty impressed. He is going to have some rough days, but that's to be expected. |
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
nothing's better than winning while learning. the defense really let us down in tampa, and while campbell was a bit shaky (accuracy wise), he did enough to outscore the panthers.
|
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
Sure, drops happen, but MAN I wanted Cooley to haul in that one TD and for Campbell to throw a better pass to Lloyd. I REALLY want to see Lloyd get his first TD.
|
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
if you noticed, his throws were off, and he was slightly tentative in the third quarter, until he got POPPED by peppers, which took away the jitters and campbell followed it up with some great throws. I noticed some of the great camera angles revealing to us where his eyes were throughout the play on the replay. He was checking every receiver very quickly and not focusing in on anyone in particular, which definitely indicates good field vision. His only weakness yesterday was he spotted his wideouts too late during their mid range outrouts and that led to his throws being too high and out of bounds. He could have hit them in stride if he identified the separation earlier, but he made up for it with his pass to cooley, perfectly in stride. All things that he can easily improve on over time. But the most important aspects in a young player....poise, confidence, and ability are all there.
|
Re: Campbell looks GREAT!
Didnt play great but getting better. JC is so much of a upgrade than brunell. It a shame that Gibbs had to stay with that old broken down Qb for so long killing this season. It was like 2004 all over again. Lets go JC keep it going.

Same here. He over threw the receivers on several occasions and made a poor mistake on that deep bomb, but he came back and called that TD play to Cooley and handled himself nicely. He is a very smart kid and I think he played pretty good yesterday, but not great. |
