So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
With every game (especially today against the falcons) Ladell Betts' value on the Free Agent market grows. Will we be able to retain him with a contract offer??? By the end of the year, he may have close to 1,000 yards. That would make him a hot commodity considering he's a great pass catching back as well.

Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Hell yeah!! i am totally surprised with the downhill running!!! He has been hitting the hole like Reggie Brooks used to. not stepping on the back of our lineman's ankles. No offense to CP, but Betts has completely impressed this fan!!
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I dont care about his value....keep him!!!
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Betts has proven he's a tough, speedy reliable every down back. The more backs the better, but I'd love to see Duckett just roll over people.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
If Betts wants to stay then i'm sure we'll keep him here. If he asks for too much money then i guess we'll let him test the market.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
If he keeps this up he is outta here for a starting job without a doubt.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Well, we had the money to piss away over AA so I don't see why not.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Wonder if he's worth hitting with the transition tag?
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I guess he is, who else is coming up to free agency with that much value ? Not saying that Betts would cause teams to throw Redskins money at us for him but if he was franchised and we could press a team into a good deal I guess it oculd work. I'd still want to keep him, but you know he'd walk around "unhappy" all the time, then you have the reporters constantly briggin up the (cue dramatic music) RUNNING BACK ROSHAMBO or whatever name they come up with.
Damn I hate losses ! |
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I want to keep Betts almost more than anything. I'd say he's our number 2 or 3 priority (with DL and DB acquisitions first).
It is becoming more and more apparent that 2 capable RBs is necessary in today's NFL. |

Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I must say, I've been impressed with Betts. I saw him as a mediocre, at best, type of backup. I figured he'd be gone and we'd keep Duckett. But he's really proven me wrong over the last couple weeks.
That said, I wouldn't be suprised if we let him walk. Or get a mid round pick for him. |
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I think if it comes down to it, cutting ties with someone like Mark Brunell and maybe a guy like Wynn will free up money to keep a guy like Betts. The lesser of two evils, I guess.
Also consider the hit we're going to take if let AA go, which it looks like we will. |
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Betts is going to be due for a nice raise, probably too pricey to justify keeping him as a backup. I'm thinking he could end up somewhere like the Jets as their starter.

Yeah, the Jets are the first team that comes to my mind. They don't have much running game to speak of, and for some reason we always find a way to deal with them. |

Betts has always been good on edge plays and dump offs, but his blocking and running between the tackles are still suspect. Portis makes up for what he lacks in those areas though, and since Betts has shown he can be quite effective at edge plays, I think Saunders would use them more like Holmes and Johnson if he had them both next season. That being said, I think Betts will be gone next season, since most of the comments I've heard from him point to the fact that he's pretty intent on testing the free agent market. |
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Get draft picks for him.........portis is better no matter what anyone says. Although I have loved Bett's performance over the last few weeks.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Betts wants to be a starter, and, after the last couple of games, has showed that he might be worth a shot. Given that, he's outta here. Do any of the tags entitle us to a pick from the team who signs him?
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Its betts or duckett. I like duckett but i'm w/ keeping a drafted skin, betts.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I say keep Betts if he'll stay. He and Portis in the backfield would be a good tandem IMO. As long as Betts doesn't run like a pussy and runs like he has been in the last couple of games.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I think hes better than Duckett, but with a healthy Portis atop the chart, I think I'd take my chances with a rookie late round pick, and spend the money to extend Cooley's contract.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Good point. That money could go to extending Cooley and also Sean Taylor.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I have always liked Betts and he has always stepped up when we needed him to start. I think his value is going up everytime he gets on the field which is going to cause us to loose him.

I know Duckett has not seen much playing time but what has he shown for you to like him? |

I would say turn your post around. Trade Portis and keep Betts. You could probably get more for Portis on the open market. Plus Betts would be cheaper. |
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I dunno man, portis now has injury problems, and bett's seems to be on the rise......bett's might have high value

Portis is not going anywhere, nor should he. Betts has turned it up, but he's no Portis. |

That'd be retarded. While I think Betts has performed admirably these past few weeks, Portis is head and shoulders better than him when he's 100%. |

Uhhh... Betts has been injured every season he's been in the league, including this one. Plus, he's never even started half a season and has still managed to get injured repeatedly. I don't doubt that some team will sign him to be a starter, but I also think that team will be a bit disappointed when Betts goes down in the preseason from another ankle issue. |
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I agree, Southpaw. A few games does not make an NFL career. I think the FO really likes Betts, but I think, given our GLARING needs elsewhere, it wuold be a mistake to break the bank for him. CP is better, and not just at running. He's a better blocker, which matters a lot. WOnder if some of those missed bltiz pickups were on Ladell?
We're strong at RB. Use the money elsewhere: D line, DBs, O-line. |

Exactly why I wanna deal bett's instead of portis. He's having a good season, so his market value is increasing. |
Exactly why I wanna deal bett's instead of portis. He's having a good season, so his market value is increasing.
We can't deal him because he wont be under contract come March, and we are past the trading deadline.

So, does anyone know if any of the tags (franchise, transition, etc.) give us a draft pick if we don't match an offer? |
So, does anyone know if any of the tags (franchise, transition, etc.) give us a draft pick if we don't match an offer?
The franchise tag would require us to devote the average salary of the five most highly paid backs in the NFL to our salary cap. If a team signed Betts, we'd be entitled to two first round picks (or otherwise negotiated compensation). We would never franchise Betts because no team is going to deem him worthy of a deal commanded by the top 5 RBs in the league. The transition tag means we have to tender the average salary of the top 10 backs in the league. We get the right to match any contract, but if we let him go, we get no compensation. I originally posed the idea, but after thinking about it, tagging him is not a realistic option. Probably going to have to let him walk. |

It wouldn't be retarded. What would be retarted is to pay big money to both Betts and Portis along with all the money tied up in the WR's. Portis is the better back but we can win with Betts. There is not a huge drop off. The number one off season priority should be rebuilding the defense. One of them is probably going to have to go but we must get something for one of them. Both have had injuries so whoever we can get the most value for I would move. Try and get some draft picks and start rebuilding the sorry pathetic ass defense. |

Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Unless we do a sign-and-trade.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Of course, the problem with that is that we have to gauge his market value, which we don't seem to be very good at doing. Plus, we have to avoid a big signing bonus, otherwise we eat that too. However, if it lets us get a decent player in return, it might be worth it.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
It won't even come down to money...if someone offers him thier starting job he will leave.
|
Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Betts has had a history of durability issues and he isn't really all that great imo. He is good, but not great and he wants to start so that pretty much means he is gone. We can't afford him anyways.
