Warpath Fantasy Football 2004

It's almost about that time! I just wanted to take a quick head count to see who's interested. I think we'll go with a similar format to last year. We'll have a pay league for serious ballers, and some free leagues as well.

Last year we had an entry fee for the pay league of $10. I'd like to up the ante a bit to encourage more serious owners, last year even with the entry fee we had a couple of owners crap out on us.

I'm thinking of a $25 entry fee with a league of 14 owners. This would give us a pot of $350. We could either go winner take all style, or dish out $250 to the winner and $100 to the runner-up, or something along those lines.

So please post here and indicate which league you'd be interested in. You can participate in both the pay and free leagues if you wish.

Once Yahoo opens up the leagues I'll have more info.

If you want to play in the pay league, I'm only accepting payment by paypal this year. Last year I got burned waiting on people to send in checks. So this year it's paypal only and you will only be able to grab a team once you pay.

If you have any ideas/feedback, please post that here as well. Please note that posting here does not guarantee you a team, once the leagues open up I'll post a thread to sign up and it will be first come, first serve. This is just a head count thread to guage interest.

Thanks guys

Count me in for the pay league Matty.

I'm game as well. Maybe cash to the top three (third place should at least win their money back)?

skinsfanthru&thru 06-25-2004 12:02 PM

do u guys ever hold a non-fee based league? I love fantasy football, but adding money to it has always made it kind of lose it's fun factor for me cuz each roster mistake potentially lost me money. If not it's kewl, but i just wanted to see if any warpath members ever got together to make a free league?

Dave Butz Baby! 06-25-2004 12:03 PM

I'll be more than happy to play and take everyone's money!

Matty.. are you planning on using the paid Yahoo FFL manager for the pay league? I have been a league commish for the last several years and found that the paid one is great to use... the additional tools (especially StatTracker) rocked. I paid for it out of the entry fees.

Another idea (that I have used in the past to make it more interesting) was to charge for any transaction where you added a player... either from a trade or picking up a free agent. Drops were free. The first ten transactions after the draft would be free, but then $1 for each one over that. Last year, we also started with $25 entry fee and had 16 people (too many.. live and learn) for a total of $400, but with the transaction fees, the final pot was over $700.... even after taking out $100 to pay for Yahoo.

To ensure payment, I set it up so that the team owners had until 12:30 on the second Sunday after their pickup to pay. If they didn't pay, I'd remove the new player from their roster, put in a sub for the previous game and re-calculate the scores. It only took one person one time not paying and then go from a win to a loss for everyone to get in line and pay on time. Using PayPal would make this setup a breeze to deal with. I used to have to go sit in the neighborhood bar and wait for the procession of folks to bring me singles!

With that many people, I also set up the final payouts so the final four would get paid... 1st place, 50%, 2nd place 25%, 3rd place 15% and 4th place 10%. If you came in fourth, you pretty much got your money back.

Very cool... I'm ready to play!

Yepper, SFT&T... that's why they call it gambling!

;)

And yes... looks like from Matty's post there will be both a paid and free league.

 just saw that matty said something about free leagues in the first paragraph. this is why skimming posts can backfire sometimes, lol.

I'm definitely in for one of the free leagues and good choice with yahoo, I've been doing fantasy football on yahoo for the past 5 or 6 years and haven't found another fantasy football site that is as easy to operate.

beg8878 06-25-2004 12:38 PM

I'm in for a pay league....

EEich 06-25-2004 12:49 PM

Count me in for both leagues!

UCONN "Mudhole" Cornelius

FRPLG 06-25-2004 01:34 PM

I am in for a pay league. Not a big fan of the transaction payments structure but whatever everyone decides is cool.

Ade Jimoh Fan Club 06-25-2004 01:36 PM

I'm in! Let me know where when to pay...

How will the draft work? Automatic or live or on rotation?

We can draft CB's right? jk!

I like Dave Butz's idea for adding a little to the pot - sound like a good way to raise a little extra for the payoff.

skins009 06-25-2004 02:13 PM

damn i tried to post this and a new thread. Oh well hope you guys see it.

Big C 06-25-2004 03:09 PM

ill do the free league, not the pay one, tight budget for college

joecrisp 06-25-2004 05:09 PM

I'm in for the pay league, whatever you guys want to do is cool with me.

Daseal 06-25-2004 05:13 PM

I'd love to do the pay league but know NOTHING about paypal. What if I send you a check weeks before the draft, matty!

Gmanc711 06-25-2004 06:09 PM

I'm in for the pay league as well.

I would prefer 250 to the first / 100 to the second or whatever, but either way I'm in.

Bergman14 06-25-2004 06:18 PM

with so much interest, how would you decide which 14 people got to do it, i have some interest, when more details come out

diehardskin2982 06-25-2004 06:23 PM

I'm for free Next day or 2 maybe I'll pay

MTK 06-25-2004 06:56 PM

thanks for all the ideas and feedback guys. Nice to see we have so much interest already. If we have enough interest we'll maybe do 2 money leagues.

Dave Butz Baby! 06-25-2004 08:18 PM
I'd love to do the pay league but know NOTHING about paypal. What if I send you a check weeks before the draft, matty!
Hey now Daseal....

PayPal is cake! (www.paypal.com) If you have a credit/debit card or a checking account (which you obviously do), you just follow Matty's instructions for where to pay his account. All that's involved is setting up a user account, entering your credit card or checking account information and the amount to pay. Then you enter the recipient of the funds, which Matty will provide. From there, the money gets forwarded to him electronically and instantaneously.

I've used it a bunch of times buying guitars from eBay. It's guaranteed/insured, so there's no chance you'll lose your cash... it works really well and is super easy. I've spent close to $10K on guitars on online auctions and have never lost a dime.

It beats the crap out of "I mailed that check yesterday..."

:D

MTK 06-25-2004 08:41 PM

Thanks for answering that question DBB, I was just about to do the same thing.

Daseal, paypal is very easy to set up. If you absolutely can't do it, let me know and we can work something out.

Daseal 06-25-2004 11:21 PM

Ok - I'm sure I'll figure out how to do it, didn't know you could do it off a checking account. Not much for Credit Cards - being a college student with a pretty good credit line is more of a curse than anything. I stay away from em, wasn't sure if a check card or checking account would work! Thanks guys!

That Guy 06-26-2004 02:20 AM

i'm up for the free league... don't know how good you guys are at this (being new here), and until i know, i'm keeping my cash ;)

NM Redskin 06-26-2004 03:46 AM

I'm in for both the money and free league, what the about the vs. the speard thing, gonna do that again? Also how do you use Paypal?

NM Redskin 06-26-2004 03:47 AM

never mind about paypal, my bad.

That Guy 06-26-2004 03:51 AM

go to www.paypal.com and create an account, it ties to a credit card or checking account. when you want to pay someone you just type in the e-mail of the person you want to give cash to (the e-mail has to be tied to a valid paypal account), and it takes care of it instantly. They take 1.9 or 3% from the receiving party for the transfer.

NM Redskin 06-26-2004 03:57 AM

Prediction, Portis goes number one in both leagues.

That Guy 06-26-2004 07:51 AM

shh... don't give away my plans.

jasonskin 06-26-2004 10:12 AM

One thing i never done was play fantasy football.I want to play maybe some one can tell me all about it and how to play

This site has some pretty good basic info on what FFL is and how to play...

It's a blast... makes every game every Sunday a lot more interesting!

the best advice I can give is always draft running backs first and a good qb after that's taken care of. defenses and kickers can wait until u have close to a full starting lineup cuz they flucuate each year and u can always find a decent one of each after the draft is over.

That Guy 06-26-2004 12:54 PM

and it makes pointless, boring matches interesting, in that you just want to see how your Fantasy team's WR is going to do.

it also helps open your eyes to the entire league, instead of only knowing the names of the redskin roster ;) i'd recommend it.

yeah cuz when the skins bye week comes u barely have anyone playing that week, lol.

Bergman14 06-26-2004 04:39 PM

Someone back there had a great idea, we should all do a league where we pick the winners each week based on the spread, its free and everyone can do it

skinsfanthru&thru 06-26-2004 05:31 PM

they have a pool like that yahoo as well. when u sign up for it they ask what your favorite team is and if memory serves me right, last year the redskins fan group was ranked around the top 5 in pick accuracy.

NM Redskin 06-26-2004 11:26 PM

I believe it was called the Warpath Pick'em League through Yahoo

skinsfanthru&thru 06-27-2004 02:14 AM

I know I personally signed up just for a regular pool cuz I hadn't yet found this site and group again.

Hogskin 06-27-2004 10:49 PM

I have made the offer several times, and will make it one more time. I will run a league free for you if you like, and even moderate a live phone draft (you pay the long distance - totally insignificant with one of those 3-cent-per-minute calling cards). If you want me to do the pay league, I can take MasterCard and VISA as well as checks if you want me to hold the prize fund. NFSL has been running leagues since 1990 (one of the two oldest services still operating). We have a very strong reputation for integrity, and a large, loyal customer base.

The rules are wide open. We can handle virtually any rule set, and get our raw stats from Stats, Inc, the best in the business. We can offer virtually any stat you want in the scoring system.

We run a Weekly Dream Team Game that is totally free - only the high scoring team from each league may play in it the following week - $100/50/25 prizes awarded every week for 14 weeks. The final 4 teams in EVERY league get to compete free in our post-season tournament with $2500 in prizes. Every league champ gets a BEAUTIFUL plaque with football cards of 7 of his best players mounted around the engraved plate.

Once someone plays NFSL, they stay with NFSL. Try it and see why - I will exend the offer for a free league for as many seasons as you want to use it. It can either be a re-draft or keeper league.

Just let me know.

By the way, someone mentioned gambling. The fantasy game has been determined by Congress to NOT be considered gambling. However, a pick-em pool definitely IS.

That Guy 06-28-2004 07:01 AM

wow, great pitch. I rather have the free league be a re-draft, its more fair and lets new people start next year without a disadvantage.

MonkManiac 06-28-2004 10:46 AM

I'm excited for this. Just post when and where to sign up. Two pay leagues sounds great, and though I like PayPal too, VISA/Mastercard is always the easiest.

When would we draft? There is honestly nothing better than a well-run live draft...
