Tomlinson breaks TD mark
The guy is freaking amazing. He's going to pass the 9,000 yard mark in just his 6th season. He's seriously putting up Tecmo Bowl numbers. He has 29 TDs now on the season with 3 games to go! He's on pace for over 35!

He is pure Fantasy Football Murder if you're playing against him. I openly ridiculed people in my leagues this year who drafted Larry Johnson over LT. Really, for the past five years straight, LT should have been the #1 overall pick, he's just that good. You know how someone is on a whole 'nother plane of goodness? When he's having a "bad day" and only rushes for 100 yards and 1 score. And the best part about LT is that he's very modest and down to earth, shares all of his accolades with his teammates, and is, by all accounts, a consummate sportsman. I dare say that we are watching the future Best RB Of All Time, and he might not have even peaked yet. |
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
He's quietly had an incredible career, and with Marty at the helm, he'll continue to get the touches. IMO, he's got one foot in the HOF already.
|
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
The guy has one foot, two hands, and his little toe in Canton.
|
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
Plus, he's THROWN for two touchdowns this year
|
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
His throwing stats are almost as good as ARE! No question LT is the league MVP this season. He can do it all and does it with class.
|
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
Yeah, he's got a case for Canton already:
- Fastest player to reach 100 TDs. - Single season TD leader (did it in 13 games, Jim Brown never did it in his 14-game seasons) Here are the career rushing TD leaders, ALL TIME: Emmitt Smith 164 Marcus Allen 123 Walter Payton 110 Jim Brown 106 John Riggins 104 Marshall Faulk 100 Barry Sanders 99 Ladainian Tomlinson 98 He'll hop over Barry and Marshall this season, and quite possibly Riggins. Brown, Payton, and Marcus Allen are in his sights for next year, when Tomlinson will be 28. Did I mention he's a much better receiver than Brown, Emmitt, Barry, or Sweetness? As for yardage, consider this. Tomlinson has reached 8788 rushing yards right now. He'll probably finish this season with 9000+ after 6 seasons. After six seasons, the NFL's career all-time rushing leader Emmitt Smith had 8956 rushing yards. The second leading rusher all-time, Walter Payton, had 8386. Tomlinson isn't just making a case to be in Canton. He's making a case to be the best RB to ever play. |

I'd take it even further, he's making a case to become one of the best all-time athletes across all sports. |
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
Ironic, because he was traded for the guy who was already anointed the greatest ever...Michael Vick
|
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
He might also win me one of the Warpath free fantasy leagues. So he's go that going for him, which is nice.

I was just going to comment on that. That's one trade that rarely gets talked about in hindsight. Can anyone even make a case for the Falcons now?? |

Finally, Sam Bowie can rest easy knowing he's no longer the biggest pro sports draft blunder ever. |

It's early yet, but Mario Williams might have an eye on that one. |

Agreed. A lot of people call Walter Payton the best football player to ever play. Tomlinson will need a ring, and he'll need longevity. With those two things, he could grab best football player ever status. |
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
Speaking of which, and this could be a thread in and of itself, but best athletes of all time across all sports? In some order:
Michael Jordan Babe Ruth Wayne Gretzky Jack Nicklaus Tiger Woods? Wilt Chamberlain Mario Lemieux Babe Didrickson Mark Spitz Pete Sampras? Michael Phelps? I don't know if there's any one football player that fits in there yet. Some say Payton, Jim Brown, Rice, and then there's a slew of QBs one of which has to be Joe Montana. But Tomlinson could join the conversation someday. |
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
There are a number of basketball players I would add to that list, but most notably on mine would be Julius Erving.

Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
If he plays another 6 years he may be the greatest RB ever.

LOL Top three people most likely to be the real Kidwell: 3) Matty (to set an example of what not to do around here) 2) Wewhite 1) Schneed (muhuwhahahaha) I'm kidding, I'm not Kidwell. |

I don't think it's going to take him six to erase all doubt, frankly. |

I bet Alexander Ovechkin will rank on that list one day.

A hockey player for the Capitals. He was the rookie of the year last year. He's sick, but they need to make sure they get a good team around him. YouTube - Ovechkin |

Federer is great. I normally could care less about tennis but I'll watch on TV if he's playing, especially in the finals. |

Oh well, I'm sure he would have been good -- tell him he should have been drafted in a place where people care about hockey. Like Fargo. Or Hoth. |

I normally could care less about tennis unless the womens are playing. Since I got HD I also seem to be a lot more interested in the women's figure skating that I often get to watch in lieu of a second NFL game. |

Spitz was before my time, and I didn't know who he was until a buddy of mine (a swimmer) told me about him. So, I read his biography and I was very impressed, to say the least. Then, along comes Phelps, and basically outperforms Spitz (probably with tougher competition too). I have a lot of respect for swimming as a sport, because it is very physically demanding -- probably the most physically demanding individual sport. |

I would agree on the physically demanding. If you think about it, when you're in the water, in every direction you move an arm or a leg, you face resistance. It's like lifting weights with every movement you make. It's the ultimate for resistance training. I swam varsity through high school and college, and I can tell you that while it's really physically demanding, it takes absolutely no skill. You put a bunch of swimmers on a basketball court for five on five and you'll be laughing your ass off at what you witness. Some top swimmers have less hand eye coordination than a newborn baby. Each sport has it's own value. Swimming's great for a physical test, golf or baseball are great for coordination, basketball for quickness agility and coordination, and football really for everything - speed, strength, power, agility, coordination. That's why football rules. It tests everything. And if LT becomes the top football player one day, you may be able to say he's the best athlete to ever play sports. |
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
I used to wrestle in high school and when we couldn't practice because of snow, which happened a lot my senior year, my buddy and I would go up to the indoor pool to swim laps. Even though we were both in really good shape from wrestling we still found swimming unbelievably demanding and draining. Back in the day I could have ran a around the track and up and down the bleachers for an hour like it was nothing, but if I swam 5 laps I'd be completely wiped out.

Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
L.T. is easily the MVP, and he's without a doubt the best running back in the league. I'm glad to see him having such an awesome season, and he always shares the credit with the rest of the offense. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
For my money, the best football player to ever play is Jerry Rice. However, the best running back I had ever seen was Barry Sanders. Now, I'm starting to think LT may well be the best running back of all time, by the time he's done. Gotta look at the whole body of work when you make statements like that, but if he keeps this up, it's gonna be pretty hard to argue with.

Yeah it's the "keeps this up" part that is in question. Keeping up this torrid pace is a lot easier said than done. Jim Brown, Gail Sayers, and Barry Sanders all went out at the very top of their game. Tough to say what they would have done if they kept playing like Sweetness or Emmitt. We shall see on LT. PS I submit that he's a better football player than Lawrence Taylor was, and hence should lay legitimate claim to the LT moniker. |
Re: Tomlinson breaks TD mark
Sanders is hands down the best runner, but LT is the best running back I've ever seen. I can't comment on the earlier guys, 'cause I haven't seen them play.
