Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Here is an interesting article I found from 1999 and one part of it talking about the transition when Synder bought the team and here is a qoute from Casserly of what he told Dan at the time:
"When Dan Snyder bought the club, I told him, ‘You’re buying this club at exactly the right point in time. You’ve got a good, young nucleus here. You’ve got a potential Pro Bowl quarterback. You have a chance to win the division this year. And you’ve got three No. 1 draft choices next year, so your future is ensured,’ " Casserly said. "That’s what I told him. And I thought the team was in good shape when I left and that the future was secure. So anytime the team has success, I’m happy for them." Charley Casserly So basically Casserly got him a bunch of #1's plus a young cover corner in Champ Bailey and a vet in Brad Johnson and look at the mess we are in now 8 YEARS LATER!!!!! So answer me this: Why in the heck did Synder keep Norv Turner over Casserly? |
Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
What's done is done.... onward!!!!!!
|
Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Because he could see into the future and knew that one day Casserly would be in a position to choose a player like Mario Williams over someone like Reggie Bush/Vince Young/etc.
It's that kind of foresight that makes the Skins the best run team in the NFL. Or, I have no idea. |

Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Turner and Casserly weren't getting along, Snyder felt it was too late to look for a new coach when he bought the team. He's admitted that if he had to do it all over again he'd have kept Casserly and not Turner. In my opinion, he should have let them both go (which ultimately he did)
Either way, tired subject that we've talked about ad nauseaum |
Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Neither was ever any good.

Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
I'd like to hear it from Charley Casserly that he wanted Mario Williams. If he was out soon thereafter, I bet you ownership and/or coaching had a lot to do w/ it.
Casserly also thought that JC was rated similarly to Vince Young. I'm not sure if this is good or bad. |

I never understoood why a team would fire a guy but keep him around long enough to run one of the most important things they do. Aren't you saying by firing him that he isn't doing a very good job? So you keep him around a little longer to continue doing a bad job? Huh? And people think our front office does tupid things. That's the dumbest thing ever. |
Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Considering his struggles in Houston, I wouldn't pine too much over it. You know our owner is in love with Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, the TRAITOR, so of course he favored Dallas Cowboy reject Turner!

Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
With the exception of Brad Johnson and Stephen Davis, and maybe Tre, I wouldn't say that that team in 99 was quite as good as Mr. Casserly made it out to be. True Turner did not do a very good job coaching up to what this town expected but Casserly did not do much to distinguish himself prior to and during Turner (Desmond Howard, Heath Shuler, Michael Westbrook, Kenard Lang, Albert Connell, Andre Johnson) and let's not forget the great purge of the 91 SB Team in 93 and replacement free agents of Al Noga, Tim McGee, Carl Banks after letting Mann, Gary Clark and Wilbur Marshall go for nothing or in Marshall's case almost nothing.
He did keep our Salary Cap in good shape though. Besides, we used those first round picks to get Lavar and Samuels and then traded Champ for Portis. That's not too shabby. Especially since the Browns took Courtney Brown with the first pick and Cincy took Peter Warwick with the 4th. and before we start smashing Turner once again consider when compared to Gibbs II he had just as many playoff appearances (1) and just as many losing seasons (2) and most of his teams were average to above average certainly better than many of our teams since 2000 and he started with no talent on the roster and did not have the open checkbook of the Dan yet. Not saying that Norv was by any means a great coach or even a good one at the head level or that he even equates to Gibbs at all but in my opinion I don't think he was the worst and he certainly did a better job than Spurrier. |
Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Let's not forget that Snyder played "fantasy" football with our team, and didn't look out for the team's best long term interest.
We had to wait until Snyder grew up and he has...we're close to getting this ship in the right direction guys. Just be patient. |
Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Guys, do we really have to debate this again? Casserly sucked folks. He was really really bad. He sucked here and he really blew in Houston. Bobby Beathard built the championship teams and Casserly rode his coat tails into the job. Let me go even this far: Id rather keep the current system, then to have Casserly as our GM........and I LOATHE the current system.

I agree. No sense in arguing over what should have been done. It's done. |
Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Let me tell you something about Casserly, he's terrible. Anybody who needs evidence of this needs to just look at his record in Houston. For some reason which I will never understand he has the reputation of dong such a great job when he was in DC. Well he didn't do shit, it was Beathard who deserves the credit. And and as soon as he took over, everything went to shit.

Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
..after all Casserly did a marvelous job with the Texans.

Beathard came to san diego and ran it into the ground. he was trading first round picks for second round picks: Charlie Jones Brian Still Mikheal Ricks Terell Fletcher Mike Shanahan went 8-12 with the raiders then went on to denver to win superbowls. Belichick was 34-42 with the browns before moving on to new england. Joe Gibbs made the hall of fame and is struggling in his return. George Seifert Inherited a superbowl team and won, then went to carolina and sucked ass. Ownership and current players play a big part of a coaches/GM's success. as bad as the Turner era was, I felt like the skins could win any game. they always had a decent game plan. Keep in mind, If Matt Turk makes a good snap in the playoff game against tampa, We go on to the championship game against the rams. I like the Bruce/holt vs Green/Bailey matchup. I think we wouldve gone to the superbowl that year. :( Btw, I still think spurrier would be a good Head Coach. We are still having the same problems with blocking that we had with spurrier except with spurrier we scored points. Ownership, Coaches and players all need to play their parts. You can't have success without all the parts coming together. |
Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Snyder admitted later on to casserly that he fired the wrong person.

Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Believe it or not Casserly wanted Bush. It was the owner and the new coach who wanted Williams. I would MUCH rather have Casserly than Vinny. Vinny REALLY SUCKS. Total ass kisser to Snyder. He's just Snyder's raquetball butt buddy. Vinny one time was playing holder for Snyder while Snyder was trying to kick field goals out on the practice field at Redskin Park. Snyder was pissed that the team was having trouble kicking field goals. Snyder thought it was real easy so he went out on the field and made Vinny play holder for him. Anyone hear about this story? I know it was reported a long time ago after Casserly was fired.

Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
Are you sure Casserly wanted Bush?
|
Re: Why in the heck did Synder keep Turner over Casserly?
I thought Williams was Casserly's call all the way. He even said that he rated him higher than Julius Peppers when he came out.

Casserly did have Williams rated really high but he did want to pick Bush. The owner did not want Bush because of the contract demands. Williams was more signable. I believe Mortonson reported it on ESPN. |

Don't we all? Giggity-giggity-giggity-goo! There's a lot of plausible deniability in the NFL. You can always claim that "the boss wanted them but I wanted him", who knows the real facts. |

If we had Drew Brees do you think our record would be 4-9? We might have 8 wins so far. Not that Belichek isn't a great coach but Tom Brady helps a whole lot. There is a fine line in todays nfl. I thought Norv's team in 1999 was pretty good but we'll never know. |
