Rumor

I've just been told by a co-worker that the Redskins are looking to swap a offensive tackle for Ogunleye according to ESPN.

Anyone heard something about this?

Redskins_P 06-30-2004 03:47 PM

Where did you hear this? I wonder which tackle they're talking about.

MonkManiac 06-30-2004 03:53 PM

Better be Samuels.

memphisskin 06-30-2004 04:01 PM

Could be Samuels, with Brunell the starter the left side is the strong side now. I don't see it happening, but the guy can rush the passer and we do need that element on our d-line.

SKINSnCANES 06-30-2004 04:44 PM

that wold leave us a big whole at tackle. I trust Bugel though,a nd we would still have our first round pick then. I assume. Ya never know what Synder might throw in though.

Big C 06-30-2004 04:54 PM

bad trade. not worth it. keep both tackles and lets see how we do

ChillWill 06-30-2004 04:57 PM

That's not a good trade. I don't believe there is any substance to that.

Samuels has far more value than Ogunleye.

SKINSnCANES 06-30-2004 05:01 PM

Define more value. No one would give a first round pick for sameuls when we thougth about dealing him, plenty of peopel would give up a first of Ogunleye. Samuels has had what, two or three bad years in a row and giving up a lot of sacks. Ogunleye lead the AFC in sacks last year. As a straight up trade we get teh better player, doesnt mean we shoudl do the trade, but you brought up value. Why do you think Samuels has more value?

RedskinRat 06-30-2004 05:07 PM

But has anyone else got wind of this rumor or are the boys having a pop at me again?

MonkManiac 06-30-2004 05:07 PM
bad trade. not worth it. keep both tackles and lets see how we do
We've had both tackles for a couple of years now, and all I keep seeing is our QB getting sacked. Coaching will help, but Samuels has shown us he is far from irreplacable. If anything, the strong coaching of Bugel makes Samuels more expendable than in previous years. A young, pass-rushing DE is something we haven't had in a long, long time.

That said, who knows if this rumor is actually true...

Daseal 06-30-2004 05:07 PM

Because Samuels has nothing but a man rushing. Oguneleyeybnenenye has Jason Taylor and one of the strongest LB cores in the league. Not to mention, we all know that Samuels has the potential to be a devastating blocker, and now that we actually have an offensive line coach... Not to mention, we want to give our offense every option in the world.

ChillWill 06-30-2004 05:11 PM

SkinsNCanes,

Good question, I did not make my point clearly. I believe that Samuels, when performing to his potential, which I think Buges will bring out of him, will play at a higher level than Ogunleye. Ogunleye benefitted greatly from his counterpart on that Dolphins line. I'm not convinced that he will be as effective on our line.

Samuels has a lot to prove this year and I believe he will be a legit Pro Bowler for the first time in his career, this season.

joecrisp 06-30-2004 05:18 PM

This development could be fueling the rumor:

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/football/9043514.htm?1c

The Dolphins' left tackle, Wade Smith, injured his knee yesterday. He's awaiting the results of an MRI, and it's believed to be a mild knee sprain that would only sideline him for a couple weeks, but you never know with these things. Apparently, there's a lot of swelling in the knee.

That said, I don't see the Dolphins being willing to take on the monstrous contract numbers Samuels is currently carrying, seeing as how they're balking at paying smaller numbers to Ogunleye.
But has anyone else got wind of this rumor or are the boys having a pop at me again?
I've been checking left and right eversince you posted this. I haven't come across anything yet.

As bad as Samuels has played the last few years, I would hate to see him go and become a great player somewhere else. I think he deserves another chance to prove himself under this new system.

That's right, we don't want to see the Redskins become the Wizards...

SKINSnCANES 06-30-2004 05:27 PM

Well, what about this, to fuel another discussion. The Dolphins seem to feel they have plenty of talent at dline,a nd linebacker. But they really need an oline. People arent sure about Ogunylele yet so they odnt want to pay him big bucks. SO what if we traded Samuels, we got Ogunyele and their first round pick for next year.

ChillWill 06-30-2004 05:27 PM

As much as I believe that Samuels will finally perform up to his potential this season, his contract is rediculous. How many 8 million dollar tackles are out there. I guess it's wahtever the market will bare but his numbers are embarrasing given his performance last season. Maybe if anyone is dumb enough to pick up this contract, we should unload him. I take back everything good I said about Chris. You can get 2 good tackles for 8 mil, 9.6 mil in 2005, he's got to go. I hope he has a great season next year so that teams will view him more favorably in trade talks.

SKINSnCANES 06-30-2004 05:27 PM

because technically, we dont always have to be the team overpaying adn giving up draft picks, we could actually get a draft pick every now and then.

he did say he would redo his contract after this year though. he wants to get atleast one of his big payout years.

SKINSnCANES 06-30-2004 05:33 PM

this is from yesterday Miami Herald
Despite a published report indicating interest from the Washington Redskins, the Dolphins have no plans to trade unsigned defensive end Adewale Ogunleye at this time, a team source said.

The Washington Times reported recently that the Redskins offered a No. 1 draft pick to the Dolphins for Ogunleye.

''I am not permitted to discuss Wale's situation with other teams, nor do we feel like we have to,'' said his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. ``We have focused our discussions exclusively with the Dolphins. [But] I am well-connected within the NFL, and I've heard the report is accurate.''

Redskins coach Joe Gibbs has denied the Times report. The Dolphins don't comment publicly on trade rumors, but the team might consider a trade only if talks with Ogunleye don't progress during the next two months.

Negotiations on a new contract are not expected to intensify until closer to the start of training camp July 30.

''We're at somewhat of an impasse,'' Rosenhaus said. ``The biggest hang-up has to do with guaranteed money.''

Although Rosenhaus said he believes it's unlikely it would come to such a point, he confirmed Ogunleye would sit out either the first seven or 10 regular-season games if he doesn't reach agreement on a long-term deal. If a contract isn't worked out, the Dolphins must notify Ogunleye after the third preseason game if he will be suspended the first three games after he reports.

If the Dolphins take that approach, Ogunleye would report for the final nine games of the season. That would allow him to suit up the minimum six games needed to qualify for unrestricted free agency next offseason. If the Dolphins don't suspend him, he would report after 10 regular-season games.

''But we're a long way from that, and I'm very optimistic we can avoid that,'' Rosenhaus said.

• The Dolphins have had preliminary discussions on a contract for first-round pick Vernon Carey, and the sides have not exchanged offers. But agent Ben Dogra said he's not concerned. Serious talks are expected to begin after the July 4 weekend

ArrowsOverNFLEast 06-30-2004 05:35 PM

I heard on the radio today that dolphins rep said skins did offer #1 pick but dolphins are not willing to trade him. I heard nothing about a tackle though.

ArrowsOverNFLEast 06-30-2004 05:36 PM

my bad missed that last post

illdefined 06-30-2004 05:42 PM

man, no one wants Ogunleye in burgundy more than me, but not for Samuels. i want to muster an argument, but just...NO is all i can come up with.

does miami need a veteran QB?? :Flush:

SKINSnCANES 06-30-2004 08:08 PM

haha, well. Technically you coudl say that they do. QB is a big question mark for them.

Shane 06-30-2004 08:11 PM

There is no way I would make that trade. I believe in Chris Samuels. I throw out the last couple of years because of the system used - abysmally incompatible with NFL realities. Samuels will return to the Pro Bowl, possibly this year.

The fact is we can't patch every leak in this team overnight. There is always an Ogunleye out there, and if the timing and price are right, fine, sign him up.

Don't believe the baseless rumors. That agent Rosenhaus is trying to create a buyers climate for his client. You can't trust anything he says. The rumors are a lot of smoke signifying nothing.

Big C 06-30-2004 08:15 PM

Good Tackles are rare, and are vital to a teams success. I just am not as high on Adewale as u all are. I dont see why Bugel would let us trade him unless he saw something he didnt like at all

RedskinRat 06-30-2004 08:38 PM

I think I'm being taunted by a Rams fan. Forget I asked.

backrow 06-30-2004 09:01 PM

All I've heard Rat.

All I've heard Rat, is the rumors.

But we know the Redskins are interested in Ogun, and the Fins are not interested in paying him. Follow me here. Connect the dots to LDS (LilDannySnyder) and his willingness to get who he thinks we need........................................................................................................................................................................................................

That's a lot of dots!

skinsfanthru&thru 06-30-2004 10:05 PM

we'd need something with ogunleye in return for samuels cuz our player is playing for us while theirs is holding out. so the skins would have the leverage between the 2 teams if a deal like this were to go down. if the skins r even thinking about this then obviously Bugel has faith in someone to step in and play in the spot vacated if this trade wen through and he knows a little bit about 0-lineman.

MTK 06-30-2004 10:09 PM

I can't see Gibbs going for a move like this. He's not going to sacrafice one ounce of protection for his offense, even if it means picking up one of the better pass rushers in the league.

Samuels is a top 5 LT who really suffered under Spurrier's joke of an offense. He'll regain his Pro Bowl form under Gibbs and Bugel, I guarantee it.

backrow 06-30-2004 10:35 PM

Cap Issue and Trade

Crazy Canuck! Maybe you can help with a question. Will the Redskins have to pay Samuels salary if we trade him? Or, if there is a straight up trade for Ogun, are we then no longer obligated for Samuels Signing bonus and salary?

Then, are we not also obligated to take care of Ogun if we get him, like we did Brunnell?

This is a complex issue!

I'm not advocating a trade, just wondering what the ramifications are.

We need you Crazy Canuck, Mr. Capologist!

Gmanc711 06-30-2004 11:20 PM

I think that, we have to pay Samuels, along with the Salary cap hit, for the up-coming season.

HOWEVER, it would be this season, and thats it forever. Where as we cut him, he still counts against the cap for years.

MTK 06-30-2004 11:31 PM

If we trade him or cut him his remaining signing bonus accelerates and all becomes due, or the cap hit as we know it. Perhaps CC can fill us in with the details.

MTK 06-30-2004 11:33 PM

while we wait for CC to chime in, I've always liked this resource for cap info

diehardskin2982 07-01-2004 03:01 AM

thats a stupid trade, Samuels is a beast ogi is gets sacks because of taylor period. I be the first to send a angry letter to Snyder and crew personally

huntz 07-01-2004 03:59 AM

I can see a deal involving draft picks but that's it. And Miami isn't dealing now with six weeks left till camp. Plus, if they do want to trade this guy, they'll make it known and try to get the best possible deal from everyone. Soooo, why deal him now?

Riggo44 07-01-2004 07:22 PM

That would make me pissed of. I don't see it happening.

Skinzfan_26 07-02-2004 04:03 PM

Ive seen this same rumor on other redskins sites /ive also bin to a dolphins site that says the same thing

That Guy 07-02-2004 04:27 PM

i think we'd see more if a trade were going to happen... so i'd say its going nowhere, and i kinda doubt gibbs would give up a decent Olinemen. Whether it'd be a good trade or not i can't really say.

Big C 07-02-2004 04:34 PM

Samuels is not merely a decent Olineman. He has been dominant in the past, hes young (27 i believe), 2 pro bowls. Hes had 2 down years in crappy protection schemes, give the guy more credit.
