Mark Maske on 980 today...
He was asked about Springs future with the club and his answer was not positive. Given Springs large number and his injury history it sounds like he may be gone. Maske speculated that the Redskins will probably be in the market for two cornerbacks with one of the aquisitions being Clements or Samuel (if they are available). Maske said that the desire for Springs to leave may be shared by both sides.
Part of me agrees with letting him go but then I am conflicted that they would use the cap number against him, especially when he has restructured to help the team in the past. I would almost say sign a corner and give Springs one more year. |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
???
I don't get why Springs would want to go. And I really don't get why we'd want to get rid of our best corner? That makes no sense. We sure this wasn't speculation? Injury prone no doubt but with a restructure he can really help us. Jesus this better not be another 'He's replaceable'. Guess what guys, he's not. Quality corners who can tackle number in the like 6's. Why we'd get rid of one for nothing makes no sense. |

Also, Springs has an injury history and they are paying him a ton of money to miss games. His injury crippled the defense last year. |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
I'd say his injury was the straw that broke the camel's back. The D had been crippled long before he started missing games.

Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
I hope they can work it out, but then again I recall an article in the post in which springs was joking w/guys & saying "nice playing w/you" after the giants game.
Who knows, maybe it actually was Springs that was talking in the Friend article? If he really wants to go, we'll let him given his cap $. |

Next season could be a whole different issue. |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
what a boneheaded move this would be...lets not "redskins" this one up for once
|
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
Didnt Springs just restructure?
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he did. |

Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
I don't see why he would want to leave, who is going to give him a deal that compares with what he will get here??

He may want to chase a ring and cannot see this team getting there the way they are currently run. At this point in his career money may be secondary (no pun intended). |

When you come to Washington, yes. When you leave, not as much. Players come to Washington to meet financial goals, they go to New England to win. |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
does springs think hes gonna get paid more elsewhere? i doubt that. 32 year old injury prone corners dont usually get paid a lot
|
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
While we're at it, let's get rid of Griffin and Washington and anyone else that can actually play defensive football.
If there is any way to keep him here, we need to keep him here. I can't remember who said this first, but he is a "force multiplier". |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
if our best corner leaves, we are screwed

Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
The Post also said (a few weeks ago) that the Jansen situation was going to get a little hairy. This could be speculative, simply because Springs level of play isn't likely to match his projected salary for this year - which isn't meant as a slight on Springs, it's the way his contract is scheduled.

What would the Patriots do with Springs?

Win football games. |

Personally I'm not buying it but we'll see.

Replace Samuel if they don't want to pay him. And the Patriots comment was my idea, Maske did not say anything about Springs going to a specific team. I used the Pats since they tend to get veterans at discounted prices. |

Totally. I think he stays, and we get a corner in the offseason to supplement. Take a chance on his health in 2007. Look at another one possibly for 2008. |

Vinny - stop overpaying for overhyped vets and start doing what the Pats do and pick up Vets at lower prices and what happens - you most likely start winning. |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
So now Vinny is writing the checks?
 |

My bad - I should also add Gibbs and Synder but I said Cerrato because his title is VP Player Personnel. Personnaly I never like Vinny Cerrato - he ruined the 49ers and now he is part of what plagues the Redskins. I know I have gone on before about how the team needs a true GM, but I don't want to get into another Babero discussion here. Matty you don't support Vinny do you? |

Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
What is a true GM?
I would say the being a true GM is a decsion maker who is not the coach - I believe that being a coach/GM like Gibbs is creates conflict and often forces the decision making too much to the short term side. The Skins have traded away too many draft picks to "win now" and as a result our depth and long term viability will be hurt. Mike Holmgren was a coach GM and it did not work there until he relinquished this responsilbities. I do not know of many football teams where the coach/GM approach has won - please tell me a team that has won the Super Bowl that uses this approach? |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
Mike Shanahan? For all intents and purposes Andy Reid has been (at least until this year) the Coach/GM and he at least made the Super Bowl. I'm sure there might be others.
I just think "We need a GM" is such an open-ended statement |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
Let's clarify this true GM thing, I think it should be the right GM. Because simply putting a GM in place isn't going to answer our problems. I think Gibbs learned some pretty painful lessons last year and they'll take a much closer look at things this offseason and perhaps make some changes that won't be visible to us. I believe if Gibbs thought bringing in a GM would solve everything he would have done it. If there's one thing he's not afraid of doing it's making any change necessary to benefit the team. I guess he doesn't see a GM as being the answer right now.

Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
The Lions, on paper, have the front office model a lot of people here think will solve everything. I'm just sayin'

But can the Redskins get rid of Vinny Cerrato and bring in someone who has a really good track record with drafting and trades? We could keep the same title for all I care as Vinny had and just pay him more than the team he is on. Would this suffice? |

For better or worse (IMO it looks for the worse) the Redskins do their shopping at Neiman Marcus. They dont even look at what the discount stores have to offer. |

Are you aware of what he actually does? Why do you think removing him would make anything any better? |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
If anything, HE'S not the one overpaying.
People call for GM, they call for this and call for that. How about just hiring a few decent talent evaluators? |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
The Lions, on paper, have the front office model a lot of people here think will solve everything. I'm just sayin'
Tafkas - I guess what I am getting at is what I belive the Redskins should focus on is getting a player personnel person that has a really good history with drafts and trades and overpay him so his current team cannot match. If the Skins brought Millen in I, like many other fans, would be pissed. But if you brought in someone who has a great history of making good drafts and trades I know I would be a happy camper. Now since good GMs/player personel men are hard to come by I would think almost by default you would have to change the structure of the FO - you couldn't bring in a Scott Pioli and say Gibbs would be able to override all your decisions because he is in such demand and coming from a position of power in New England. So my proposal would be at least something similar to what Gibbs and Bethard had where Bethard had control over draft picks and if Gibbs wanted a FA he could go get him (although I would say that since the cap was not in effect at the time you would propbably need to have GM approval as far as contract amounts go so we could avoid overspending) |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
Do you know what Vinny does? He has no decision making responsibility at all. He is the scouting coordinator and Snyder's eyes and ears. That's it. If you want a guy who is a better scout (ie: the guy who evaluates talent and gives opinions) then so be it but he doesn't make trades, conduct the draft, or make any personell decisions. He watches film and grades players. That's it.

Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
I found a good article on Vinny
Cerrato's Special Working Relationship I think he makes a great point here: "When you're losing, no one wants to talk about getting Shawn Springs, or Cornelius Griffin or Marcus Washington. When you're losing, it becomes 'why did you take Mike Barrow or Mark Brunell?' |
Re: Mark Maske on 980 today...
Are you aware of what he actually does?
Why do you think removing him would make anything any better?
I can look at what they have done in the draft and I would have to think that he had at least some pull in the decision making in these drafts and I don't belive they have been too successful with their picks/trading of picks. He is the VP of player personnel so I would think that Gibbs has to rely on him for somewhat for these decsions or the Redskins are wasting a couple $100,000 on paying Vinny for nothing. But I think a better way to jusge how bad Vinny is how the Skins did before Gibbs came back. Case in point: What did the Skins do but sign all those overpriced aging veterans in 2000. You may say the Dan Synder had a lot to do with that, but let me ask you this - if Vinny was a good player personnel director wouldn't he have the knowledge/courage to tell Dan to not overspend like that? Vinny has even said it was a major mistake to do what they did at the time. I always thought if you made mistakes like that at most companies you get fired, but Vinny still resides at Redskins Park |
