A.J. Smith better find a good replacement or he's going to be in some hot water. The feud him and Schottenheimer had was childish, and it may end up costing the Chargers a trip to the Super Bowl. Shottenheimer has been a proven winner, even if it hasn't always (well, never actually) translated into playoff success. I still think it's stupid to fire a coach that just lead your team to a 14-2 record and the top seed in the best conference.

If Gibbs didn't have those three nice little rings he would be in the same boat. If you want to compare the two just look at their playoff records.

Re: Schottenheimer fired from San Diego

Yea this little blurb is on the ESPN homepage:
Chargers Fire Schottenheimer
The Chargers fired Marty Schottenheimer on Monday, reports ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Schottenheimer led San Diego to a 14-2 regular-season record, only to lose in the AFC divisional playoffs.

Im not sure I would of fired him, but hey hes not a proven winner. I think the Chargers squad is a damn good squad to have for any 1st year coach. Anyone think Grimm gets a look?

Re: Schottenheimer fired from San Diego

Martty is an extremely average head coach. To be honest AJ Smith had more to do with the team going 12-4 than Marty. This guy has done a terrific job of picking talent and building the team. In my opinion the Chargers are only behind the Ravens in terms of talent. They need a new coach to continue to grow Phillip Rivers and that can run the 3-4 defense. If they can find that, they'll win the super bowl next year.

As I have said before, he should be gone(fired). People argued but hey the staff was all leaving. Disputing the call of the fumble then his team imploding with penalties was so typical.

Re: Schottenheimer fired from San Diego

I simply do not understand this move. The Chargers have already lost 4 assistant coaches/coordinators in the offseason.

What is going on out there?

What are the stipulations of the Tuna's retirement?

Can he still coach this year, or does he have to take a year off since he retired?

I'm sure Parcells loves to surf.

Outside of Ron Rivera, whos on the market? Now that I think about it they should hire none other than former Redskin RUSS GRIMM.

dumb move to fire him. 14-2 and lost their head coach, oc, and dc.

also rivera isnt a good fit since he runs a 4-3 and san diego has an awesome 3-4

That's the first thing that popped into my head.

I also have a feeling Tuna isn't finished... I don't know why... I'm probably just insane.

Norv Turner is also still out there. I don't see that happening however.
Martty is an extremely average head coach.
Do you honestly believe this statement or was it pure hyperbole? Because Marty is one of the "winningest" coaches in HISTORY of the NFL. Moreover, unlike a lot of coaches who seem to only perform when they have a HoF QB at the helm or al All-Star cast, Marty has won in a lot of places with a lot of different personnel and coaches. Marty's consistency in winning despite changes in scenery, personnel, assistants, GMs, fans, etc. tells me that he's well above "average." To have gone 8-8 with the personnel he had here in D.C. should, by itself, speak volumes.

Moreover, that the Chargers waited until now to make this move says a lot about the wisdom of the Charger front office. Most of the quality/choice assistants are gone, the top head coaching candidates are gone, and teams are gearing up for the draft and free agency. To dump your head coach now is about as dumb as it gets.

I think the Chargers will be lucky to get back to the playoffs. What a Dum move.ESPN.com - NFL - About face: Chargers fire head coach Schottenheimer

Re: Schottenheimer fired from San Diego

I just read the statement by the owner over ESPN. I think what we all fail the realize is what goes on behind closed doors. Here, you have two guys who can't stand each other and they have to try and work together? The owner called it dysfunctional. I think Spanos saw the problems and had to make a move. Same thing went on when Snyder took over. He said Casserly and Norv were fighting "like cats and dogs."

"Dysfunctional" as in 12-4? If I were a Charger fan, I would be absolutely sick. That grown men can't maintain a professional relationship indicates that one or both of them needs a serious attitude adjustment.

On an related note, next offseason should be full of head coaching candidates - Schottenheimer, Fisher, Cowher, Grimm, and several high-profile coaches should be available should Gibbs decide to retire.

Re: Schottenheimer fired from San Diego

Appearantly the Charger brass was upset about all the assistants that got away this year on both sides of the ball. Then Marty and AJ Smith had a small disagreement about whether linebacker Donnie Edwards will be back next year. Front office says no, Marty wanted him back.

The straw that broke the camel's back, however, was when Marty wanted his brother Kurt Shott as an assistant. Spanos stepped in and said enough is enough. This is why it's reported Spanos said they are 'dysfunctional."

yeah but you dont do it this time of the year! And like Sheriff said, grown men need to handle their business. No one ever said people that work together have to love each other. Seriously stupid move, should have waited til the end of next season to fire him.
Well I guess this makes our front office look pretty good, for now.....

They should be upset because Marty doesn't even wear a headset. As far as gameday strategy he is as uninvloved as any NFL coach I have ever seen. With that being said he is still a solid coach and what I like about Marty is he teaches.

So what if he wanted his brother. Kurt has been a good NFL coach for many years. It's not like he's not qualified. And all Donnie Edwards does is lead the Chargers in tackles year after year. Sounds like AJ Smith needs to take a hike.

If you were going to fire him, why would you wait until all the good coaches already have jobs? I wonder if they have an ace up their sleeve?

fisher won't be available. the titans (any everyone else) realize how good is his, and i seriously doubt they let him walk.

Re: Schottenheimer fired from San Diego

This a bad move by the Chargers. Their best chance at getting a coach with experience now is to go after offensive/defensive coordinators of other teams. I don't think any job is more perfect than the SD job. They have youth, talent and great weather. I hope they don't go after Saunders or Williams.

Re: Schottenheimer fired from San Diego

It's a horrible move. It sends a terrible message to the players and administration. #1 seed in AFC and fired. Silly not to give MartyBALL another year. He's got the best team in football right now. I think the Chargers are idiots, but the only way to save the day is hire Chucky. He'll slide in there and win on someone else's hard work....

Re: Schottenheimer fired from San Diego

Marty will do one year in TV - bringing his bubbling personality to ESPN, nost likely, and then I believe he'll go to...

The Cleveland Browns.

Different ownership since his last trip there. Only one playoff appearance since his departure. I'm sure Cleveland would prefer to lose in the playoffs every year than not sniff it.

I'd bet Carroll is the coach by Friday.
