More good news for the Giants
One day after the New York Giants cut ties to starting left offensive tackle Luke Petitgout, his backup cut ties to the league, as veteran Bob Whitfield on Tuesday filed paperwork to retire from the NFL after 15 seasons.

Re: More good news for the Giants
I know of no decent tackles on the market and the Giants pick too late to get a hold of tackles Brown or Thomas in the draft. I will be estatic if they do what they did at the end of last season and move G Diehl out to tackle. Andre Carter was schooling Diehl in Week 17.

Yea no kidding! Parcells leaves the Cowboys. Reid takes a month off from Philly, And now the Giants are droping like fly's. |

I think a big reason why the Gianst cut those guys loose is that a new GM came into town (Reese). I would be shocked if they cut 3 more big names next offseason. |
Re: More good news for the Giants
Reese is cutting dead weight. Older/injured guys are getting the axe.

Exactly. No need to panick over these cuts if you're a Giant's fan. Now, if Eli Manning musters another so-so season, then I'd be worried. |

Thats what I said in the other thread. The Giants have had two years where the injuries have hurt them down the stretch and I think they are looking to fill those gaps. |

Re: More good news for the Giants
Solid tackles are so hard to come by. That's two games where Andre Carter should earn his money next year. Plus, no Tiki (although Jacobs has seemed impressive). It should be a turnstile to the quarterback on 3rd down.

Re: More good news for the Giants
I think these moves hurt the Giants next season, but if I'm a Giant fan, I think I like how he is going about building this roster, and I think he is doing the right things to make them a serious contender in a few years, pending they can fill in the right players. I like the philosophy though.

I tell you what will hurt them this year, Tiki Barber standing on the sidelines wearing a Canali suit, instead of a blue jersey. |

Yeah this shaping up as a disaster year for them I think. Let's see: 65% of our offense gone-check Starting left tackle and backup gone -check Coach who loves to make people hate to play still here-check New GM thinning the herd-check Eli is our QB-check Exactly what good do they have going for them into next year? |

Thats something you dream about happening. The G-Men are ROYALLY screwed and I dont think the Cowgirls can pull it together enough to be in contention as much as they were last year. We need to jump on this! |
Re: More good news for the Giants
These moves aren't going to hurt the Giants that much. However if they don't get a RB better than Brandon Jacobs in the offseason (I bet they will), they will really be hurting from the loss of Tiki.
I mean the Steelers lost Bettis and look how well Roethlisberger adapted. It wouldn't be the same with Eli though. IMO, Roethlisberger struggled because he had his role in the offense raised for the first time in his career. This caused more attempts, and a more realistic representation of where he is at this point in his career. I'd bet his first two years were inflated because of a run-first offense. In Eli's situation, hes always had the weight of the world on his shoulders, so it makes sense that he would improve considerably in his 4th year. However it won't matter if that running game is going to be a non factor for them. |

Re: More good news for the Giants
I just don't see much going for them. They were an effort team to begin with (going back over the last few years). They relied on a quality running game, a few(stress: few) pretty good parts and mostly on effort and will to win games. Now their running game is severely hurt and they didn't improve anywhere else last year. Aslo I doubt many think Eli is on the path to stardom at this point. I think you can realistically look at this team and see them struggling to run the ball which forces them to throw. That puts all the pressure on Eli. How's that been going for them? I haven't even gotten to their defense yet. They have 3 guys who can play and one of them is literally on his last legs. They are weak in the secondary and at OLB and are simply ok in the middle. They have a ton of holes.
On top of all this their coach makes the game not fun for them. I think if you are going to be successful you have to love what you are doing. Coughlin makes them not love it. You can see them fade every year as the season wears down. The best thing the every other team in the NFC East has going for them is Tom Coughlin. He is good for 4 losses alone I bet. |
