Whos available at 21 and 42?
The reason I ask is that there seems to be a lot of talk about the Redskins and Broncos swapping picks. So lets look at the facts
- The Redskins FO has mentioned that they would like to trade down. - The Broncos want a DE and just lost out on the Patrick Kerney sweepstakes to Seatle - The Broncos really want to trade up and I believe they have 4 first day picks so they definately have ammo. - It is possible that Gaines Adams and/or Jamaal Anderson will be available with the 6th overall pick - It should take cost the Broncos a late first and late second to move up into the top 10. - Dre Bly wants to go to Washington and Shawn Springs wants to go to Denver. - Washington and Denver can't go a year without trading players because if they don't trade the universe will implode Personally I was thinking that drafting Charles Johnson would be a good idea with the 21st pick. A LE thats capable of rushing the passer and plays well against the run. However I have no idea who they would take with the 42nd pick. I would love it if a guy like Arron Sears (OG Tennesee) or Mike Griffin (S Texas) was available but I highly doubt it. Keep in mind this thread is based on a hypothetical scenario (but also a very real possibility) so with that said what do you guys think? |
Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
Personally I think we will trade the # 6 to some team who is wanting to draft Brady Quinn. Or the outside chance that Russell falls to 6, but I doubt the Raiders will take Quinn.
I figure we might have offers draft day from Miami, Houston, and Minnesota to move up and secure Quinn. Hopefully by falling back 1-3 places we can pick up a third rounder or more. Didn't Baltimore trade a #2 to move up 1-2 spots a few years ago? |
Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
The 42nd pick is not nearly enough to move from 6 to 21. Check out a draft value chart online. We could get a second rounder by trading back to the number 12 or 13 or at most 15 spot.

Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
I want some serious bling for that 6 pick. A top 6 or 7 pick has a good chanc to be dominate. A pro bowler. After that it really becomes a serious crap shoot. We'll be able to get a stud at 6. We need some serious payolla for that pick to me.

Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
IMO after Okoye and Branch, there are no DTs worth having. SO if we trade down, we should be careful to land in a spot where we can still land one of them.
The DE I want is Carriker. We can get him in the mid first round and he would be a great asset for us at LE. I'm not sure I'd pass on either Okoye or Branch to get him. I DON'T want a pass rushing specialist end. I'd like one more season of data on Carter BEFORE we make a move to replace him. I don't want Gaines Adams or Jamaal Anderson. Give me Okoye, Branch, or Carriker. |
Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
I think both Okoye and Carriker could be had with some shrewd moves by the office during the draft.
|
Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
I think the best we can hope for is Quinn to still be there at 6 . Get two or three teams trying to out bid each other to move up. Who knows what might be offered.

The whole point of us trading with Denver would be to get Dre Bly. The 6th for Dre Bly, the 21st, and our 3rd rounder back (which we sent to Denver in the Duckett deal) would be very fair and make sooo much sense. We could even then turn around and send Springs to the Lions. Or send him to the Broncos and have them throw in a 2nd rounder. I don't care if we miss out on a tip top talent at 6. I'm not going to kid myself and pretend that we don't have depth problems at TE, OL, S, and D Line. We need multiple players, not one stud. If we are forced to pick at 6, then Alan Branch is my guy. But I'd much, MUCH prefer this deal with Denver, which seems like a very plausible deal according to LaCanfora: Redskins Insider |

I'm pretty sure either Quinn or more likely Peterson will fall. Adrian Peterson is amazing and there are a few teams that might really want him. Quinn would be the best because there are like a whole bunch of teams that want and need him. |

Not sure if I like it, but as long as we can get something like a second for Springs it could work. This whole Springs thing is getting kind of ugly. |

Even a 3rd for him would be fine by me. Springs is getting older. A 3rd rounder would net us a pretty good LG who'd be cheap and, of course, very young. |
Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
With the way that OG depth is this year, some of the more elite prospects could be had in the third.

I don't think we are looking to replace Andre Carter. Teh new guy would play opposite of him and replace Philip Daniels. Carter improved dramatically during the second half of the season banking 4 of his 6 sacks in the final 5 games and also posting his 3 highest tackle total on the season during that span. I think Carter will be fine. I agree about getting Okoye or Branch instead of Adams or Anderson. Two undersized, pass-rushing DE's will be inneffective if we do not have some meat in the middle to eat up the blockers |
Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
Don't forget about Bett's either. I want him to stay around 1 more year as security and to possibly build his stock but I still would'nt be too surprised if he was traded if a good deal was offered.

Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
I like the idea of Spring and smoot back together with a guy like Alan Branch holding the line down. but if something where to happen as far as for draft picks this would be suitable
|
Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
good OGs are easy enough to find in the 2nd or 3rd. springs for bly + picks could really help us out. I haven't seen film on anderson, but looks like a decent gamble. I like okoye's upside and carriker more though, even though they'll be picked later on in the draft.
we need at least one starting DL and one starting OL this draft to really have a good offseason. after that, picking up another TE or a safety, or depth would be nice, but those aren't the big issues right now... we could use a 2nd DL more than any of those needs due to the age we've got there (1 DE 1 DT). in the 2nd or 3rd a starting DT is going to be REALLY tough to get this year, though some of the DEs there will still have good starting potential. |
Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
We definitely need to keep our 6th pick.

Whatt about Betts and Springs for Champ Bailey. (just kidding)

funny if they offered it i would take it |
Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
Well i think its obvious we gonna get Bly and lose Springs. It think Springs surprised me with shutting down Steve Smith, but he didn't play much which was the fear when we got him. We got good value for acquiring him so let's move on to Bly. Bly is faster than Springs and they are bout even in coverage. Betts is on the tale if the Broncos "really" want him. Throw in our 6th pick as fuel to the fire and lets talk business. This is gonan be a mega trade. Don't be surprised, the Redskins are not gonna be quiet this off season like people think.

One more thing to add to you pluses - in addition to having much more depth in the trade analysis you provided by trading down from #6 to all the things you said it would probably help tremendously with the salary cap because I would think that the #6 pick is going to demand a ton of money with a huge signing bonus. Last year Vernon Davis was the 6th pick by SF and his contract was a five-year contract worth roughly $23 million. To me the gems of the draft are rounds 2-4 - relatively cheap as far as contract demands but a lot of them are talented enough to start in the nfl if you got a good scouting department. |

I have a question about this thread title actually. I thought the Broncos had the #21 and #56 picks (not #42).
Did I miss something? |

Probably more like a 4th or 5th. The trade with Denver would be GREAT, though the Skins would probably have to move one of those other picks if they wanted to move up and get Okoye, I don't think he'll be around at 21. |
Re: Whos available at 21 and 42?
Here are some numbers from the Draft Value Chart that every NFL team uses.
- The Redskins 1st Rd pick (#6 overall) is worth 1600 pts - The Broncos 1st Rd Pick (#21 overall) is worth 800 pts - The Broncos 2nd Rd Pick (#56 overall) is worth 340 pts - The Broncos 3rd Rd Pick (Traded from Washington) (#70 overall) is worth 240 pts The total of the first three Bronco picks is 1380, which leaves 220 points (the value of the 74th - i.e. high 3rd round pick) left to make up. I think you could definitely say Dre Bly is worth a third round pick (but no more than a third round pick) so that would be a very fair trade to all parties involved. If the Broncos covet the 6th overall pick than I think the Skins should make the deal, but the should take NO LESS than the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Bly in the deal. They always give up too much in these draft day deals (Bailey AND a 2nd for Portis? A 3rd for Brunell? A 3rd and a 4th for Llyod), this would finally be a fair trade, I hope they pull the trigger. P.S. Don't get me wrong, I like having Portis (would love to have Bailey back though) but I still cannot understand why they also had to include a 2nd in that trade. |
