Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....

Well here's the deal in a nutshell. Many around here (DC), Joe Gibbs included, felt that Smoot shouldn't have gotten away to begin with. In fact, Gibbs prefaced his presser with the fact that it was mistake on both sides to let Smoot go to Minni.

I think for the dollar amount he signed for, the fact he wanted to come back to the Redskins, he's 27 years old....I can go on and on really. No, it wasn't a splashy deal, but it was very solid, sensible signing for the Skins.

If Smoot stays healthy, I think it could prove to be the best off season move this year.

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....

Uhh thank God you're not running this organization. First of all Smoot probably won't even start for us, and will come in on certain packages. The whole reason we signed Smoot is because we lack depth at CB, and he gives us great depth, I for one would much rather have Smoot back there than Kenny Wright, or Mike Rumph. So you better just get used to Smoot because he is going to be here for awhile.

MonkFan4Life 03-10-2007 11:29 AM

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....

I think that bringing him here made perfect sense. It's not like Shawn Spring was cut and Smoot was brought in to take his place. He's back to be a #2 or a nickle back. I know he's not Bailey or Green but he's solid. He is a physical player which is something that is needed. When you have solid CB depth, which wasn't here last year, you have a better chance at holding down opposing passing games. How many times last year did you cringe at the fact that someones #3 WR was going to torch either Wright or Rumph ? How many times did you wish that Springs was backin the lineup because the guys that were starting just weren't cutting it ? Smoot is a good locker room guy, no he's not going to take a teams #1 WR out of the game but he can do what the team will ask him to do.

I wanted Fred Smoot back here because it's good for the secondary. You can't have too many quality corners especially when I had to look at that excuse for a secondary last year. You keep Springs because he can help the younger guys along and it shows a "commitment" to your guys. Smoot was one of Gibbs' core Redskins that got away so to bring him back, if just for that fact, makes perfect sense to me.

And your sig ? Seriously ? Dumbest trade ever ? Not the 100 picks the Vikings gave the Cowboys for Hershel Walker ? Not the 75 picks the Skins got from New Orleans so they could draft Ricky Williams ? Not the TJ Duckett trade but the Clinton Portis trade ? A guy who had 1315 and 1516 yards in his first two seasons in Washington. He was hurt last year so his production did drop, but seriously THAT was the dumbest trade ever ?

Not that good of people, sounds like you know him pretty well?
He was good for the team, and did well in DC the first go round. Smoot is a GOOD corner and yes he had problems in minn. so what.
He is a solid corner with good speed and covers well. He will be a starter this year. And would have been the best we had if he was here last year, due to the Springs injuries.

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....

Smoot brings depth to the CB situation. This was not a bad move. He knows the defense already. Why waste time even questioning this move? Its a great move probably the best besides Fletcher the skins have done in 2 years since the Moss trade.

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....

So you'd rather not have Chris Cooley on the team, I'm taking it from your post as well? Because he has a cool name.

Furthermore, and I could be wrong, because I cant memorize plays much past 2004 at this point (leaving out 01-03), when did he get an unsportsmanlike call for his "loudmouth"?

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....

Calm down, Smoot was a good pickup and didn't bust the bank. He's still a quality #2/#3 corner. He's certainly a huge improvement over the likes of Rumph/Wright.

It's great this guy always has to argue, and everytime he tries to make a point, EVERYONE criticizes him. I won the Darrell Green/Champ Bailey argument, then he goes on to say that Fred Smoot isn't that good? He's not. He gets beat a lot, but he's depth. Is this guy ever going to give up trying to make 'player-bashing' statements and get someone to agree with him?

Amen!! Depth and quality depth is what we need at corner. If we can keep Springs then Smoot will be the 3rd corner.

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....

For the money spent Smoot was a good aquisition for a team that was lacking in the secondary department. There's a saying that goes something like this "you dont miss something until it's gone" when you look at the performance of Wright and Rumph last season, the signing of Smoooot makes perfect sense. Of course we would have loved to have someone like Clements, but the fact of the matter is that the Skins simply did not have the kind of money that he was asking for. In addition you have to look at the history of the Skins signing free agents to big money and the they dont pan out. Oh by the way we have one of the highest paid SS in the league and he doesnt start.

Hail to the Redskins!

So please tell me who we can get thats better than Smoot.I mean for only a 21 million dollar contract?Smoot played good as a Skin,is he a #1 CB.Probably not thats why we drafted Rogers. This is Rogers 3rd year and he must prove that he is the #1 CB.If he's not going to be that guy.Well then i guess we will be looking for another CB next year.Point is Smoot is a good #2 and great for depth.Something we need bad and some of the people in here are right.ITs a good thing your not running our front office.

Why is everyone saying that Smoot will be a #2 corner? Are we really depending on Springs to 1. be the #1 and 2. stay healthy? Help me out on this one please.

yeah, we need springs to be the #1, cause rogers and smoot probably can't handle it.

but seriously, smoot played with a broken sternum... a BROKEN STERNUM! throwing up during half times cause of the pain, then coming back out and playing well. He had a couple bad years in minnesota, but very little of that got back here, because when he was here, he played hard, even when we were losing.

Here is another pro Smoot comment: He was also apart of the 2004 defense that was so damn good. He's just one player, but in my mind, a very good one that was ripe for the picking. Good job F.O.!!!!!!

Fred Smoot is a fan favorite, his play for the Redskins MADE him the fan favorite and he earnt the adulation he gets from us. The chants of "Smooooooooot" are due to this, not because he has a cool name!
Same with Cooley, if he plays like Christian Fauria we don't scream "Cooooley", simple as.
Getting Smoot here definitely upgrades our CB depth, MUCH rather have Smoot out there than Wright/Rumph - anyone who thinks otherwise had better step away from the crackpipe!
If Smoot was so good we would be done CB shopping? I didn't realise he could morph into more than 1 person - did you see a game last year, our CB play (and depth) was terrible, Smoot is just the first part of an upgrade (or overhaul) - with better corners we might just cover WRs long enough to allow our D-line to get to the QB this year.
We're bringing in a guy that already knows the staff, players, system, location, owner - a guy that will have no problems settling in.
Loud mouth penalty machine - I'll agree with you on the 1st (but not about Fred Smoot) :-p
Why is no-one else critisizing the move? A rhetorical question if you ask me.
Go watch some Skins games from back in Smoots early days and you should remember what we all do.

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....

I admit that I haven't seen Smoot play much the last two years. Who wants to watch Minnesota playing in that shitty dome? However, his play here was fine. The reason he was a fan favorite is that he played well, and with tremendous courage. I agree that sometimes fans like a player so much they can't see it when he starts to suck (cough Lavar) and Smoot may have gone downhill fast, but I didn't see it two years ago. He is still relatively young and if he is injury free, I expect good things.

Bingo!

We are not anointing Smoot the #1 CB position, but he's a solid #2 and very good after that. He's also better than anyone we have other than Springs, Rogers can be a #1 IMO hopefully he can have a breakout year, I feel he has the talent I just wish Williams would let him get up on the WR and let him bump and run he's very strong for a CB, he might even be better suited for Safety the way he hits.

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....

While I do not agree with chrisl4064's extreme view, I do agree that some folks have a short memory about Smoot's play.
It seems the big Smoot fans only remember the good and not the bad. Unless Smoot finally found his way to the weight room he is 175 pounds soaking wet and with sand in his pockets. While Smoot likes to hit, he will lose against big RB's or Te's.
I still remember the awful game Smoot had as a Redskin in St. Louis against Torry Holt . Torry Holt had a career game and made Smoot look terrible. I was not saddened to see Smoot leave because like recently departed Dockery, Smoot is not worth the contract Vikings signed him for. We were smart not to match and the Vikings found this out the hard way and cut him. WHile Gibbs is putting a good spin on the story of Smoot leaving and now coming back, Smoot is a good CB, not great. He will be a great #3 cb, but not a great #2 or #1. Improvement over last years #3 CB? Yes.

Smoot is a classic #2 - the game you mentioned has him matched one-on-one with Torry Holt. Torry Holt is one of the best receivers in the league statistically, so he's going to beat a #2 every time. Smoot was ill-prepared for a feature role, and it showed. He still had a good enough year to earn a payday from another team, so we lost him.

This team doesn't need him to be a star, but in his career he's been able to shime in smaller roles. It was a good pickup at a good price for us.

Wow, guys the sky is not falling with Smoot coming back to town. I think everyone is getting overly concerned about the secondary because the front 7 were not near as effective in 2006 as they were in 2005.

From the games that I saw in 2005 compared to 2006, the defensive front (in '05) was much more effective at getting in the QB's face early on a and forcing an early release.

That same quality was not there for the Skins in 2006.

Show me a defense that gets early pressure on a QB and even a mediocre defensive back can excel from that.

So you get Smoot in the offseason, and in April get a day one DE and/or LB and see where it gets you from there. I think the 'Skins will be just fine.

I'd like to add that coming from a Viking Fan family I watch the Vikes alot to, they never get any pressure in the passing game either, They are very similar to us, the williams in the middle can stop the run but no outside pressure, leading to poor corner play

Then he proceeded to play so below expectation that the Vikings cut him. He is not coming back a hero. He went to a team that was supposed to be a few players away from a Super Bowl and what happened? He is not coming back on a good note.
I think Smoot is more of a classic #3 corner, not #2. IMO Smoot would have problems with a team like the Colts that have a strong #2 WR.

I couldn't agree with anything you said. Smoot will sure up our secondary and gives us another option, if Springs is not on the team. The vikings were a couple of players short of the super bowl? I've said this before, but Smoot was on our team in 2004 when our defense was top 5 in the NFL. This guy brings heart and skills to his position. We just need a defensive line that can put pressure and force turnovers. I'm sure that we can all agree on that last statement.

Agreed tuna. But, this offseason our boy c-los will be training with D. Green and (gasp) neon deion. C-los just had the sophomore jinx this past year. I think we all expect great things from him this coming season. He just needs to stop giving the receiver a 10 yard cushion.

Well heres my problem with what your saying, does Jeremiah Trotter ring a bell, he was an average player as a Redskin, but a dominant MLB for the Eagles, NFL players have a comfort level just like any other human being. Fred Smoot openly has said he didnt like being in Minnesota, hes a Redskin, those were Joe Gibbs words, and i have a feeling that Joe Gibbs is a better judge of talent than you are. Fred Smoot is going to surprise alot of people, the sad thing is it seems you have already forgotten after two short years, that Fred Smoot became a fan favorite, not for his name, but for his heart and his play on the field. I welcome back Fred Smoot, and will be right there saying "I told you so" when he plays like the old Fred Smoot, the Redskin Fred Smoot.
