The Bucs released DT Darrell Russell.

Not a bit surprised.....

Thats a big suprise. Hey maybe we can get him again. I think not. What a looser. Training camp has not even started and he is already cut. Maybe he will go back to Oakland and be with the rest of the loosers. |
Does it seem to anyone else that players such as Russell seem to make the same rounds to the same teams, i.e. Skins, Bucs, Raiders, Broncos, the same teams are always looking at those older name recognition players
|
I just don't think the guy will ever get back in football shape. What a disappointment. Wasn't he a first round picK?
|
I'm pretty sure he was a first overall pick, or at least close to a first overall.
|
Are you sure this isn't a scene from the movie "Friday"? I mean how do you get cut on your day off? What a moron.
|
He was drafted number 2 overall in 1997 by the Raiders.
|
yet another complete waste of talent.
|
I expected this
|
I'm waiting for someone to say we should offer him a veteran minimum deal filled with incentives.... any takers?
LOL |
why not, what do we have to lose at the 2nd DT spot. I think Russel showed some signs of being good again next year. He did do well before he started getting caught with drugs didnt he? THen he was suspended and got out of football shape. At this point though they are plenty of players out there that havent been suspended that deserve more of a shot at a starting job
|
We have a winner!
|
Joe just got rid of Ware over public intox, do you guys really, realllllllly think he'd bring Russell in for a try? NO WAY! This DT is finished as a productive NFL player, but he could start his own filmmaking company. ;)

Russell showed signs? When? He was barely on the field, LOL To me it seems this guy just isn't hungry anymore. The fact that Gruden gave up on him this early really says a lot. |

He's not a "Gibbs-type guy" - he won't use common sense and he will embarass us off-field. No way we should take him, even if he has any upside at all. |
Maybe Russell feels that he doesn't have to prove himself till the season starts. He was a monster DL before his off field problems caught up with him. It's not the same situation as Darryl Gardener as he had off the field, bad locker room presence, and a bad back. Russell doens't have his own regimen. And it seems that no team so far is willing to wait for him to get into shape.

i thought it was stupid when we picked him up... then he was late for everything and out of shape... i can't even believe another team would bother. Now i'm pretty sure his career is over... hope he didnt waste all that cash on pills and such ;), he's gonna need it.

other teams will bother because its hard to find someone with his talent at defensive tackle. if this guy had 3/4 of the drive most players have and a clear head, then he'd be a pro-bowler every year. |
I'm thinking there won't be any rush to get this guy

The guy is a freaking crack head. Plain and simple.
|
Chris Mortensen reported that he was let go for violating the terms of the substance abuse policy. He tested positive for alcohol, and that's a no-no for someone who had a previous drug suspension.
|
I believe that this is the seventh or eighth time that he has run afoul of the substance abuse guidelines meaning that he would be given an indefinite suspension even if he were on a team's roster.
The Redskins need this guy like a moose needs a hat rack. |

bye-bye to D Russ
July 15, 2004 4:06 PM ET Russell could face another suspension The News Free agent Darrell Russell may be facing another suspension for violating the terms of his substance abuse recovery program. According to an ESPN.com report, Russell tested positive for alcohol use five weeks ago, which led the Buccaneers to release him on Tuesday. If the reports are accurate, the league may suspend the defensive tackle indefinitely. Russell missed 18 months while serving two suspensions before playing eight games for the Redskins in 2003. Our View If Russell were punished for violating the terms of his treatment program, he would be eligible to apply for reinstatement after week eight of the NFL season. However, it's doubtful that commissioner Paul Tagliabue would allow him to return even at the point, given that this would be Russell's seventh substance abuse violation. Darrell is quickly becoming the NFL's version of Steve Howe, who was suspended seven times and eventually banned for life by Major League Baseball due to numerous drug-related infractions.
|
What a waste........whatever punishment he receives he did good job of earning it.

From Len P.:
No one in Washington, where Darrell Russell appeared in eight games in 2003, was very surprised when Tampa Bay released the trouble defensive tackle Tuesday afternoon. After all, the Redskins were the first misguided franchise to provide Russell a chance to salvage his career, coming off an 18-month suspension for repeat violations of the NFL substance abuse policy, and he repaid them with a string of listless performances. He was suspended by the team for the final game of the season for violating a club rule. Redskins officials were not stunned, either, when ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Russell was cut by the Bucs because he had tested positive for alcohol, thus violating the parameters of his aftercare program. Late last year, Redskins officials and players were alarmed over the quantity of alcohol Russell was tossing down during the team's annual Christmas party at owner Dan Snyder's digs. Fact is, some team officials wondered aloud at the Christmas party if Russell was, indeed, violating his NFL probation. Recalled one player: "Even if it wasn't (a violation), you'd have thought that a guy with his history, trying to make it back into the league, would have been a little more (discreet), right? I mean, if you're Darrell Russell, you've got to know they're watching every move. But he didn't seem to care." It remains to be seen if any other team takes a chance on Russell now although, the point may be moot, if the NFL suspends him again. Defensive linemen who weigh 300 pounds and are as athletic as Russell are always tempting. But given his penchant for recidivism, getting another opportunity will be difficult. Certainly he'll never have a support group like the one in Tampa, with general manager Bruce Allen, coach Jon Gruden, and d-line coach Rod Marinelli. It should have been a blessed trinity for Russell, since Allen drafted him in Oakland, Gruden coached him there, and Marinelli was his college position coach at Southern California. If that threesome couldn't convince Russell to walk the straight and narrow, chances are no one else can, either. Anyone else want to re-sign this jackass? |
If he couldn't make it in Tampa he's not going to make it anywhere. That was the best situation possible for him and he straight up blew it.... before they even got to training camp!
|
I wonder why none of the skins went up to him to ask him what the hell he was doing. I don't remember what the whispers were saying about him as far as his presence in the locker room but I'd have thought a fellow player or coach would atleast go up to him and see why he was getting plastered at a team event.
|
Please recall how Darrell Russell got here in the first place. He came off his suspension in mid-season and the Skins needed a DT bad. Problem is they got a bad DT.
But the way they got him was that the Redskins did a "complete background check on him". That's what Danny Boy said the day they signed him. He was out of shape and there was no real competition to get him in the league but Danny Boy and Vinnie signed him and said he was "good to go". Now pretend you are a player or coach; you've been around this team for a while and have seen how Danny Boy ran the show and dealt with people who didn't do what he wanted done. You are at the Christmas Party at Danny Boy's house and Darrell Russell (the guy who Danny Boy brought in and delcared was clean as a whistle) is pounding down drinks like Rosie O'Donnell at a Krispy Kreme bakery. Would you step up and say something if Danny Boy or Vinnie didn't? Remember, you have a potential double whammy. Russell might go postal on you or Danny Boy might fire your ass. I wonder why they all sang "Silent Night"? |
I think they all knew Russell wasn't going to be around for long, so why bother saying anything to him?
|
cuz its the right thing to do, to look out for the welfare of others especially those with a lot to lose or those not possesing the most sound mental capicities. that's how I would look at it.
|
in my experience, he probably would have just blown you off, wanting to help and being able to - unfortunately - are different things... couldn't hurt to offer i guess, unless it'd set him off.
|
Maybe the team official was Steve "F-- this. I'm gone anyway" Spurrier. And maybe the player was Jermaine Haley, battling Russell for playing time.
Haley: "Hey DR, let me get you another drink man" Russell: "I don't know J-Hale, I think I might be violating my probation" Haley: "Man you crazy! Here have some ecstasy with the Johnnie Walker, that'll calm you down" Russell: "Anybody seen my video camera?" |
ROTFLMAO!

Easy mistake to make with this team - we've signed every DT fresh out of rehab or the loony-bin we can find. |
Good catch Brud. I've made the correction
Now back to our show. Be sure to tip your waitress |
I picture Russell being more of Hennessy guy instead JW.
|
Originally I had put Hennessy, but I changed to JW as a nod to my main man JWSleep
