Dallas brought him in to play FS. He is a SS, sounds an awful lot like an A.A. type situation, this makes them no better in coverage, just a fearsome hitting duo. Let me restate, he is better than who was there before, but he is by no means an elite FS. He can be an elite SS, but he will be torched in space. I can't wait to watch ARE and Moss run circles around him.

I have gotten the same read as you on Hamlin. A big hitter, who likes to lay the wood.

it is a one year deal so i don't know if that means that Dallas still has faith in their young FS Watkins, or if they think that they have a chance at Reggie Nelson at #22 in the draft.

Watkins started to come around after his benching last year, or seemed to.

I don't like the signing. We still don't have a Defensive QB like we did when Darren Woodson was back there. (It is no coincidence that Roy Williams had his best years while playing with Woody, who would constantly tell him where to line up)

(The Redskins had a Safety who used to tell ST where to line up, that you lost in FA, right?)

So really I think we are still looking for a FS in the draft. I don't know what Hamlins signing bonus was, but it is only a 1 year deal.

And I haven't even talked about the incident in Seattle where he got his head smashed in by a street sign, and his assailant wound up dead four hours later.

I've got to agree here. He is Roy Williams part 2. He's a great hitter, but definitely not known for pass coverage. For that reason I LIKE the signing. They need a safety who can cover sideline to sideline, not another guy to blow up RB's and WR's in the middle of the field. Also, I hope this means they won't draft Reggie Nelson. I hate seeing my Gators go to the Cowgirls.

Our Free Safety's were TERRIBLE. 102, and 101, out of 102 Safetys in the NFL.

It's an improvement, no doubt. I was simply saying that he's not known as a good coverage guy. But he's a solid player who is still young, and at 1yr $2.5M, it's also a low risk move. On paper it looks like a good move for you. Frankly I think your defense overall will be vastly improved in the Wade Phillips era...

Wasn't Hamlin drafted as a corner? I would think his coverage skills would be pretty good for a safety.

5 Rings is spot on, though. That defense needs better coverage out of the safeties. Roy isn't going anywhere and they need someone to pick up the slack back there.

On paper a good and necessary move for them.

I hate to admit it, but Dallas' defense is going to be downright scary next season. I don't spot a single area of need on the Boys D and they have a lot of playmakers/intimidators.

Their projected starting lineup is as follows:

LDE - Marcus Spears
NT - Jason Ferguson
RDE - Chris Canty
OLBs - Al Singleton, Demarcus Ware
ILBs - Bradie James, Akin Ayodele
CBs - Terrance Newman, Anthony Henry
FS - Ken Hamlin
SS - Roy Williams

I agree for sure. AND they just hired as their head coach a D-Coordinator who had a scary unit of his own in San Diego the past few seasons. Our offense will be no slouch, so I think the Skins-Cowboys games this year are going to be super competitive and really fun to watch.

LDE - Marcus Spears - somewhat of a bust as his 1st round draft position should mean more production out of him. The hope is that the one gap nature of the phillips 3/4 will help this softie.

NT - Jason Ferguson - Love him. We have no back up for him tho..
RDE - Chris Canty - Great 4th round pick up - Run stopping animal. Limited pass rush

OLBs - Al Singleton - will probably get cut in TC depending on Ellis' achilles recovery and where they are going to put Bobby Carpenter.
Demarcus Ware - Love him.

ILBs - Bradie James - Can't take on Guards (a must as a 3/4 ilb) can't cover the flat. Signed a big contract in the 2006 off season. Not looking good.

Well, they certainly improved their safety situation with this signing, but--if anything--deep coverage is going to be even more of a glaring weakness now than before.
