Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
Sorry to see Joe go. He's got a mouth, but he's not afraid to go against the grain, and speak his mind. Rare these days. However, I have a lot of respect for Jaws. Long live the King

They should have booted Tony instead.

Totally! Great writer. Horrible in the booth |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
What happened to MNF?
JAWS is annoying and an Eagle. |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
I doubt I'll be able to watch any eagles game that Jaws announces. Talk about an unabashed homer.
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
Didn't think they'd make a change.
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
Not that Joey Sunshine was all that in the booth, but he beat the heck outta Tony Kornheiser. Tony should've got the boot. And JAWS goes down your spine like a rusty nail.
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
If anyone was going to go you'd have thought it would've been Tony. Joey T was with the Sunday crew for years and gets just one season on Mondays? Maybe there's more to this?
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
I am very excited to have Jaws in the booth. He is one of the most informed analysts in the business.
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
I must be the only person on earth who doesn't understand the hatred for Joe Theismann. Even some Redskins fans can't stand him. Colin Cowherd said today that the email and complaints against him are higher than for any other broadcaster they have -- something like 80% against. The rest are in the 60% range at most.
I still say that the networks tend to overwork this a little. I honestly don't think the viewers care as much as ESPN thinks as to who the announcers are and whether they have enough "chemistry". Just show me the game. It all started going downhill for ABC when the Al Michaels/Frank Gifford/Dan Dierdorf team was broken up. Gifford at some point had to be shown the door, but otherwise, I think they messed up a good thing, and haven't been able to fix it yet. |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
Joey T. isn't my favorite, but he certainly isn't the worst one on the Monday night crew, Tony talks about his fantasy football team more than he talks about the game
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
I like Theismann as an announcer (yes, I know I'm in the minority). Although I must admit Jaws is a very reasonable repalcement.
This completely sidesteps the issue that there are a BILLION things worse about ESPN monday night football than Theismann could ever be, starting with the guest rapper of the week in the middle of the 3rd quarter. WTF????? So I'm even more angry that in trying to "fix" it they are going to miss the things that are really wrong. |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
When JT first became an announcer I was not much on him. I'll have to say that over the years I grew to like him and his view of the game. I thought he did a good job of explaining things and why play worked or did not work. I really just listen to them as filler and for who's who playing.
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
there isn't anyone who watches more game film, or is more knowledgeable then jaworski. now that i have said that, why does mike tirico keep getting a free pass? he is about the worst, unknowledgeable( yes, I'm making up my own words) play by play man in the business.

true. I just feel like Jaws and Tom Jackson put their former teams on such a pedestal that they lose objectivity when they talk about them. I didn't get that sense from Theismann, but it could be that I'm just a little biased on the subject. |

I agree about Jaws, but I think Theismann is a bit bias too. Plus if you forget the biases and look at credentials Jaws is clearly the better choice. |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
I don't have a problem with Jaws coming aboard, but it should be interesting to see how he makes the switch from breaking down film to breaking down a live game.
I like Joey T. too though, but I'm sure he'll land another gig pretty quick. |

I like Joey T. too though, but I'm sure he'll land another gig pretty quick.
That is a good point, I will be interested to see that too. I just hope his knowledge will give a more technical aspect to calling games that us hardcore football fans might find good |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
I see Jaws as a significant upgrade to Joe T. As a player, there's no question Theismann is the man but as an analyst that can articulate football knowledge Jaws crushes him.
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
The real problem is ESPN. As has been mentioned those celebrity interviews are intolerable. I hoped when the game went to a "sports network" there would be less of that but there was twice as much.
Do they honestly believe that someone who doesn't like football is saying, "Jeeh, I wonder what celebrity is whoring themselves out this week? I'll tune in and find out." They need a producer with the guts to tell the corporate partners to go eff themselves. Jaws is great with the film breakdowns but will he have time during the game to get those points over? It will really be tough if he has to compete with the pool boy from Desperate Housewives. (Is there a pool boy on Desperate Housewives?) It seems like there would be. Pool boys, lawn boys, milkmen, etc. |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
I know a lot of people on this site don't like ProFootballTalk.com, but every Tuesday they would do a little blurb calling out "Joey Sunshine's" gaffs from the previous night's broadcasts. I always loved reading that. Oh well. I loved Theismann as a Redskin, but he is biased (for example, he was the only ESPN analyst to pick the Skins to win the SuperBowl last year), and wasn't very good in the booth. He would make ridiculous overstatements and ending up looking dead wrong quite often....
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
I know, but I love some good ol' fashioned homerism every now and then.
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
I'm resisting the urge to respond here. I would just say that everyone needs to take a step back and not look at this property as a game on ESPN but rather a primetime show on a Disney network.

Yeah I hear ya. I think Jaworski's Philly bias will be more than offset by his knowledge of the game. He is as good as their is in breaking down film. He'll be great on the telestrater explaining those replays... |

and Joe wasn't when he called the Redskins game? The only announcer that is totally unbiased is Troy Aikman. I think he is one of the best on TV, and totally calls the games as he sees them. |

I love watching games called by Buck/Aikman. Great stuff. |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
Never could stand Joey T as a color guy. I loved it when Paul Maguire (not much better) would thump Joey T time and time again on Sunday nights...
Jaws is fine, and will analyze the game better than Joey T. Most of the time I ignore what is being said unless there's a big play. TK wasn't an option to leave because he's there for comedic relief and for the amount of football he doesn't know. Another good color analyst is Moose Johnston. I honestly think he and Aikman took lessons from the same guy... |

OK, maybe you can shed some light on this, because I've heard all day long how ESPN has received complaint after complaint on the 3rd quarter celebrity interviews, but the only official change has been Theismann to Jaworski. So what's the deal? Will the viewers be forced to endure interviews on Jude Law or Kevin Kline this season? Also, can they cut down on the opening scene when the city morphs into a football stadium? Or will they finally send Hank Williams Jr. to ride off into the sunset? Enough of the overblown music intros -- just give us the game already. Make it happen SmootSmack! |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
DAMNIT! I was really hoping that Bill Maas would be one of the commentators on MNF this year. Maas is the best commentator in the NFL, hands down.
Seriously though, I'm kinda surprised that they booted Theisman instead of Kornheiser. I think Kornheiser is a great writer, as someone else said before, and I also think he's good on PTI, but he just does not fit in on MNF. I feel like when he's on PTI he's very comfortable around Wilbon and they really feed off of each other, but when Kornheiser's not around him, he's definitely not as good. To me, it looks like he feels out of place, and uncomfortable on MNF, and he isn't able to make the same funny and clever comments he makes on PTI. I dunno, it's like he's scared he's gonna say something dumb, or he's trying too hard to same something interesting, and the result is a disaster. It's probably because he felt intimidated with a guy like Theisman around, and that may change a little around Jaws, because Jaws seems like a nice enough guy, but I think Kornheiser needs to go. I'd much rather have Wilbon on MNF than Kornheiser. |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
Joe Theismann has been a terrific and insightful announcer with an infectiously bright personality and I always like hearing him cover the games. No doubt he will have very little time before he gets hired to cover NFL games on a different network.
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
I don't know why Riggins doesn't get a shot -- or maybe he doesn't want it.
I was also impressed with Michael Wilbon during a 1999 preseason game. |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
They really need Madden back............HAIL TO THE REDSKINS

I can't wait for Jaws to break down the 2nd and 3rd look of a 3 yard gain up the middle while the game is 5 or 6 plays ahead. Still, better to be watching Jaws discuss the beauty of a 3 yard dive than listen to Rapper T promote his video while you strain to see the live game on the monitor in the background. I think Jaws and Joey would have been funny together, more so than either one of them with Tony. |

Unfortunately that's the problem. True football fans aren't tuning in to hear Jamie Fox blab on and on about his latest movie during a football game. They're catering to the wrong crowd. |
Unfortunately that's the problem.
True football fans aren't tuning in to hear Jamie Fox blab on and on about his latest movie during a football game. They're catering to the wrong crowd.
I mean let me just preface by saying I don't necessarily agree with the philosophy as a football fan. But from a business standpoint, I understand what the intent is. Basically, what better stage to promote all your other properties than Monday Night Football? The idea being that if you're watching MNF and Jimmy Kimmel comes on and plugs his show that Wednesday night maybe some more people will watch Kimmel. Then while they're watching Kimmel they'll be some promo spots for Good Morning America the next morning and that will lead into The View and thats being filmed live in Walt Disney World. And then you go WDW and you see a big movie poster for the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie and then you see the movie and you decide you want your own Disney eye patch, so you go to the Disney Store...and so on. How successful MNF has been in helping the other properties, I really can't say. |
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
its almost like saying commercials work. i cant think of one product i have purchased because of a commercial, or the celebrity hyping it
|
Re: Theismann out, Jaws in on MNF
who cares.i dont watch the games to listen to the commentaters.
