Re: Urlacher fined $100,000

Def. a bit over the top. Gooddell seems like he really whats to make an impression of how stern he is and he won't take anything thats not approved. Regardless, I think vitamin water should pay the fine because they will likely get some good publicity with every sportswriter in the country talking about this over the next few days.

This is icing on the cake for vitamin water. I can guarantee they paid Urlacher’s fine and then some. They knew he’d be fined, this is just what they wanted. There still getting publicity over a month after the game. I bet there marketing executives are doing cart wheels right now.

That's the definition of excessive...but these players need to learn that they are not above the "law".

urlacher already knew what was going to happen. i would be shocked if they didn't pay the fine for him. they got just what they wanted out of the hat

This is rediculous, the NFL whores out there players left and right and makes tons of money off of them, but when one of there players decides to make money on his own they rape the guy. I cant stand Goodell already, i miss Tags. I know it wont put much of a dent in Urlachers wallet, but come on, that has got to be one of the most expensive hats ever.

I don't think Goodell is to blame here. This is not something new the league has just come up with. They have has this rule in for quite some time. They(the NFL) are paying their employees(the players) and they have the right to restrict what they wear at a company event. It is no different than me being required to wear a uniform on my job. If I worked at Kmart, i am sure they would have a problem if I walked in with a Walmart shirt on.

I do think the fine was exessive but Urlacher knew what would happen and he did it anyway. This is not Goddell's fault.

i see the NFL side of this. Gatorade is a known supplier/ paid advertiser. part of their contract stipulates the Gatorade only involvement with the NFL. they paid for the energy drink monopoly over the NFL

I agree. If enough of this stuff happens gatorade could easily pull the plug on their relationship with the NFL.

The NFL is just keeping their advertisers happy, simple as that.

Think of it this way. You're a prominent employee of Federal Express. In one THE most prominent settings possible for your industry, i.e. you are guarranteed to be photographed, you wear a UPS hat. Don't you think there might be significant ramifications?

You play in the NFL and make gazillions of dollars - well, a significant part of those gazillion dollars are channelled through sponsors. Whether you like it or not, you gotta play by the rules that allow the NFL to remain the top sport. Don't like it? Don't play.

But it's a rule, probably written into every NFL contract too.

Too bad.

The fine is HUGE and excessive, but the fine IS justified...maybe not the amount of it, but the decision is right.

He can afford it. I guess they want to send a strong message not to offend the biggest sponsor the league has.

Yeah, do you honestly think Gatorade would pull there deal with the NFL, its a cash cow, there lucky to have a deal with the NFL

Re: Urlacher fined $100,000

This is a little heavy handed, however the NFL wanted to make the fine so large as to make it unprofitable for companies to do this. All the players know about this rule; they sign contracts that say they will respect the companies that sign sponsor contracts with the NFL. Indirectly the players benefit from these sponsor's money in the form of higher payroll and bonuses. Urlacher knew what would happen, he knew the fine and he will have to pay it.

I think that implementing the fine Gave Vitamin Water even more publicity. I didnt even notice it before now.

Yes that amount, because that is what is specified by the NFL. The rule was not created a while back, and the NFL is just enforcing it. All these rules are written in print, and Brian signed that when he came into the NFL, and if he wants to complain about it the NFL can just open their file cabinet, dust off his folder and pull out that contact which he signed. That being said, somehow Vitamin Water must have been behind this, they get crazy publicity, and it is a heck of a lot cheaper than running an ad campaign.

Sure is! $100,000 vs a sixty second spot in the SB. They have a good advertising team.
